Hotspot Shield vs hideme is the comparison to read if you want a free VPN. Hotspot Shield’s free Basic plan gives 500 MB a day on a US location, with ads in the app. Hide.me, often searched as hideme, has offered a free plan with no data cap since May 2026, with about eight locations on one device, and needs no email or card.
Hide.me also had a 2024 no-logs audit; Hotspot Shield has none. This guide compares the free plans, then privacy, paid plans and fit.
Hotspot Shield vs Hideme: Free Plans
Hotspot Shield’s free tier caps you at 500 MB a day and one US location, and shows ads, AllAboutCookies and vpnprograms report. Hide.me’s free tier has no data cap, offers about eight locations and runs at reduced speed on one device, findcheapvpns, CriticNest and Toolradar report.
For more than light browsing, hide.me’s free plan goes much further each day.

Hotspot Shield vs Hideme on Privacy Evidence and Free Plan Privacy
Hide.me’s no-logs policy was audited in 2024, though sources name different auditors, and it holds VPN Trust Initiative accreditation. Hotspot Shield records session length, bandwidth and device hashes and has no independent no-logs audit.
Hide.me also runs its own servers rather than renting them. Our VPN audit tracker compares providers.

Hotspot Shield’s free plan is ad-supported, and its privacy policy lets it derive your approximate location, Cloudwards notes. Hide.me’s free plan needs no email address or card at sign-up.
For privacy on a free plan, hide.me asks you for far less.
Paid Plans and Tools
Hotspot Shield Premium costs $7.99 a month on a yearly plan, with 45 days for refunds and 10 devices. Hide.me costs about $2.69 a month on its 26-month plan, with 30 days for refunds and 10 devices, and one review says it renews at the same price.
Over the long plan, hideme is the cheaper of the two per month by a clear margin.
Hide.me includes dynamic port forwarding, multi-hop and a Stealth protocol. Hotspot Shield offers Hydra, WireGuard and IKEv2 with split tunnelling, but no port forwarding in the sources we read.
Hide.me has the broader toolkit for power users.
Platforms and Ownership
Hide.me covers Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Android TV, Fire TV and routers. Hotspot Shield’s Linux version is command-line only, and its free plan excludes routers and smart TVs, Tom’s Guide notes.
Hide.me’s free plan reaches more kinds of devices.
Point Wild owns Hotspot Shield in the US, which faced a 2017 complaint to the FTC over its free version. eVenture Ltd runs hide.me from Labuan, Malaysia, since 2012.
Our VPN ownership guide explains why that matters.

Free Plan Speeds
Hotspot Shield’s free plan is limited to about 2 Mbps, a 2026 review notes, enough for messages and light pages but not video. Hide.me’s free plan also runs at reduced speed, reviewers report, though without a data cap.
Neither free tier is built for streaming video.
Kill Switch, Split Tunnelling and Refunds
AllAboutCookies found every Hotspot Shield plan includes a kill switch and split tunnelling, with a notification when the kill switch is active. Hide.me includes split tunnelling too, our tables record.
Turn the kill switch on before relying on either.
Hotspot Shield Premium gives 45 days to ask for a refund; hide.me gives 30, our tables record. Both windows start from the first paid purchase.
Since both have free plans, you can test each before paying anything at all.
Upgrading and Streaming
Upgrading from hide.me’s free plan opens all locations, lifts speed limits and allows 10 devices. Upgrading Hotspot Shield removes the daily cap and ads and adds router, smart TV and Linux use, Tom’s Guide notes.
Compare the paid features you actually need before choosing either upgrade.
Protocols and Censored Networks
Hide.me supports WireGuard, IKEv2, OpenVPN, SSTP and SoftEther plus its Stealth protocol, our tables record. Hotspot Shield runs its closed-source Hydra protocol with WireGuard and IKEv2, Tom’s Guide notes.
Hide.me gives more choice, especially for networks that block standard VPN traffic outright.
Hide.me’s Stealth protocol and multi-hop help on restrictive networks. We found no comparable obfuscation feature or China rating for Hotspot Shield in our sources.
Travellers to filtered countries should test hide.me first, before they leave.
Hotspot Shield’s free plan does not suit streaming, vpnprograms notes, and hide.me’s Netflix US access depended on the server in a 2026 review. Both work best for streaming on paid plans.
Test your services within each refund window.
Support
Hotspot Shield’s free plan comes without one-on-one support, Tom’s Guide notes; Premium adds it. Hide.me’s free plan needs no account details, so try its support channels before deciding whether to pay. We put the two side by side in our Hotspot Shield vs PrivadoVPN comparison.
Good support matters most when a router or TV setup goes wrong at home.
How We Research
This page draws on AllAboutCookies’, vpnprograms’, Cloudwards’ and Tom’s Guide’s Hotspot Shield reviews and our hide.me tables, including findcheapvpns, CriticNest and Toolradar on its free plan. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is AllAboutCookies’ Hotspot Shield review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
