Hotspot Shield vs VyprVPN (2026): Hydra Speed or Chameleon Stealth

Hotspot Shield vs VyprVPN pairs providers built around their own protocols. Hotspot Shield, owned by Point Wild in the US, has no independent no-logs audit, offers a free plan of 500 MB a day on a US location with ads, and charges $7.99 a month on a yearly Premium plan with 45 days for refunds. VyprVPN, now owned by Certida, runs its own servers and its Chameleon protocol for networks that block VPNs, but its only audit was by Leviathan in 2018, before the change of ownership, fahimai notes.

This guide compares protocols, evidence, free use, censorship, price, devices and fit.

Hotspot Shield vs VyprVPN: Hydra or Chameleon

Pick the protocol that matches your main problem: slow speeds or blocked connections.

Hotspot Shield’s proprietary Hydra protocol is built for speed and powers its split tunnelling, which works only with Hydra, Cloudwards notes. VyprVPN’s Chameleon scrambles packet metadata so networks find it harder to detect or block VPN traffic, Impulsec notes.

One protocol aims at speed, the other at getting past blocks; neither is open for outside inspection.

Hotspot Shield vs VyprVPN on Evidence

Ownership changes are a reason to want fresh audits.

VyprVPN was one of the first VPNs to publish a no-logs audit, in 2018, but has had none since, including after Certida took over. Hotspot Shield has no independent no-logs audit, and its policy records session length, bandwidth and device hashes, a 2026 review notes.

Neither offers current outside proof. Our VPN audit tracker lists providers that do.

Free Use

The daily allowance resets each day, so light users may never need to pay.

Use it to try Hydra on your own connection.

Hotspot Shield’s free Basic plan gives 500 MB a day on a US location with ads, limited to about 2 Mbps, a 2026 review notes. VyprVPN has no free plan; it offers a 30-day refund on first purchases, our tables record.

For free use, Hotspot Shield is the only option here.

Censored Networks

At home, neither stealth feature matters much. Abroad, it can decide whether a VPN connects at all.

Test Chameleon from the network you will use.

Chameleon is VyprVPN’s main selling point for restrictive networks, and Impulsec calls it a standout feature. We found no comparable obfuscation feature for Hotspot Shield in our sources.

Travellers to filtered countries should lean towards VyprVPN.

Price

Hotspot Shield’s free plan lets you test Hydra before paying anything.

Compare renewals, not just first bills.

Hotspot Shield Premium costs $7.99 a month on a yearly plan, and its renewal price is not printed, vpnprograms notes. VyprVPN costs about $3 a month on two years, with some sites listing $10 monthly or $60 a year, fahimai notes.

VyprVPN is cheaper on long plans. Our renewal price guide compares renewals.

Devices

A router counts once.

Count every phone, laptop, tablet and TV before buying.

A router counts as one device on either.

Hotspot Shield Premium allows 10 devices, one review notes. Recent reviews also list 10 devices for VyprVPN, though older ones mention 30.

Check the current limit at checkout before buying for a large household.

Owned Servers and Owners

Physical control limits who can touch the hardware.

VyprVPN owns its servers rather than renting them, fahimai notes, which gives it physical control over the hardware. We found no similar claim for Hotspot Shield, which lists about 1,800 servers in 80 countries, vpnprograms says.

Owned servers help, but only an audit confirms what they log.

Point Wild, formerly Pango and Aura, owns Hotspot Shield. Certida owns VyprVPN after buying it from Golden Frog.

Ownership changes are a reason to look for fresh audits. Our VPN ownership guide explains why.

Hotspot Shield vs VyprVPN: who should pick which

Protocols

Hydra and Chameleon are both proprietary, so outsiders cannot inspect them as easily as open protocols.

VyprVPN supports WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 alongside Chameleon, Impulsec notes. Hotspot Shield offers Hydra, WireGuard and IKEv2, and Tom’s Guide notes Hydra is closed-source.

WireGuard on either is a good open-standard default at home.

Kill Switch and Split Tunnelling

AllAboutCookies found every Hotspot Shield plan includes a kill switch, with a notification when it is active, and its SmartVPN split tunnelling covers apps and sites on Windows and Android and sites only on Mac, vpnprograms notes. Check VyprVPN’s kill switch and split tunnelling options on your platform before buying.

Turn on the kill switch and test it after setup.

Who Each Is For

Hotspot Shield suits people who want a free daily allowance, simple apps and Hydra’s speed at home. VyprVPN suits travellers who need Chameleon on filtered networks and want a low long-term price, accepting an audit record that stops in 2018.

If outside proof matters most, look at audited providers instead; our audit tracker lists them.

How We Research

This page draws on vpnprograms’, AllAboutCookies’ and Cloudwards’ Hotspot Shield reviews, a 2026 Hotspot Shield review on logging, and Impulsec’s and fahimai’s VyprVPN coverage. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is vpnprograms’ Hotspot Shield review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
