Hotspot Shield vs ZoogVPN is a comparison of two free plans with very different travel credentials. ZoogVPN, a small Greek service run by Zoog Services in Patras, gives 10 GB a month free and offers its Shadow and ZoogTLS protocols for networks that block VPNs. Hotspot Shield gives 500 MB a day on a single US location with ads. Neither has a public no-logs audit in our sources.
This guide compares the free plans, censorship tools, evidence, paid plans and fit.
Hotspot Shield vs ZoogVPN: Free Plans
ZoogVPN’s free tier allows 10 GB a month on one device, with ads on Android and AES-128 encryption rather than its paid AES-256; its own pages disagree on whether free users get three or five locations, findcheapvpns notes. Hotspot Shield’s free tier resets 500 MB each day but offers one US location at about 2 Mbps.
For travellers who need more than one country, ZoogVPN’s free plan is the more useful.

Censored Networks
At home these tools matter little. Abroad, they can decide whether a VPN connects at all.
ZoogVPN’s Shadow and ZoogTLS protocols aim to hide VPN traffic on restrictive networks, findcheapvpns and listify note. We found no comparable obfuscation feature for Hotspot Shield in our sources.
On hotel, campus or national networks that block VPNs, ZoogVPN has the specific tools.
Evidence and Transparency
A warrant canary is a regularly updated statement that no secret orders have arrived.
ZoogVPN has no public no-logs audit, but its Android app passed Google Play’s independent security review and its warrant canary was current to August 2026. Hotspot Shield has no independent no-logs audit, records session length, bandwidth and device hashes, and faced a 2017 FTC complaint over its free version.
ZoogVPN offers a little more transparency. Our VPN audit tracker lists fully audited providers.

Paid Plans
Introductory prices hide the real cost, so compare renewals too.
ZoogVPN costs about $59.99 for its two-year plan, though sources differ on whether that covers 24 or 27 months. Hotspot Shield Premium costs $7.99 a month on a yearly plan, with 45 days for refunds.
ZoogVPN is far cheaper over two years; Hotspot Shield has the longer refund window.
Devices, Base and Owners
A router counts as one device on either.
Hotspot Shield Premium allows 10 devices, one review notes. ZoogVPN allows 10 on paid plans in several reviews, while others list unlimited. Both free plans allow one device.
Check ZoogVPN’s current device limit at checkout before buying.
Apps and Protocols
Test any kill switch by switching Wi-Fi off and on while connected.
Hotspot Shield runs its closed-source Hydra protocol alongside WireGuard and IKEv2, and its split tunnelling covers apps and sites on Windows and Android. ZoogVPN supports OpenVPN, IKEv2 and L2TP plus its own protocols, and documents a kill switch and leak protection.
At home, either works for everyday browsing.
Greece is an EU member, so ZoogVPN falls under European privacy rules.
ZoogVPN is a small independent company under Greek and EU law. Point Wild, formerly Pango and Aura, owns Hotspot Shield in the US.
Our VPN ownership guide explains why ownership matters.
Who Each Is For
ZoogVPN suits travellers and budget users who want free data in more than one country, Shadow on filtered networks and a cheap paid upgrade. Hotspot Shield suits people who want a little free data every day on a US location and a long refund window if they upgrade.
For travel, try ZoogVPN’s free plan first and keep Hotspot Shield as a backup.

Kill Switch and Streaming
Test the kill switch by switching Wi-Fi off and on while connected.
AllAboutCookies found every Hotspot Shield plan includes a kill switch, with a notification when it is active. ZoogVPN documents a kill switch and leak protection, findcheapvpns found. For streaming, Hotspot Shield’s free plan is not suitable, vpnprograms notes, and ZoogVPN’s small network gives fewer locations to try.
Streaming is best tested on a paid plan within a refund window.
Paying and Upgrading Later
One 2026 review notes ZoogVPN accepts Alipay and WeChat Pay. Hotspot Shield offers no anonymous way to pay, a 2026 review notes.
Check that your preferred payment method is accepted before upgrading.
Upgrading Hotspot Shield removes the daily cap and ads and adds routers, smart TVs and Linux, Tom’s Guide notes. Upgrading ZoogVPN unlocks all locations, AES-256 encryption and more devices.
ZoogVPN’s upgrade costs far less over two years.
Testing Both
Both free plans need only a few minutes to install, so you can try them side by side on the same connection. Check a site you use every day, a short video and, if you travel, a network that blocks VPNs.
Watch how quickly each allowance runs out before deciding whether to pay for either.
How We Research
This page draws on findcheapvpns’ ZoogVPN safety check, listify’s 2026 VPN comparison, WP Room’s ZoogVPN review, and vpnprograms’, AllAboutCookies’ and Cloudwards’ Hotspot Shield reviews. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is findcheapvpns’ ZoogVPN safety check. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
