But it doesn’t explain everything. Windscribe wins two categories outright, and one of them is the reason people look at it in the first place.

The honest framing: these aren’t really competing for the same buyer. One is a full-network premium service, the other is a flexible tool for specific needs.
Network Size: The Number Behind Everything

⚠️ Why this matters beyond bragging rights. A small fleet increases the risk of congestion, which shows up as slower speeds and less stable connections at peak hours. Published analysis makes exactly that point about Windscribe’s network.
It also limits country coverage. Sixty-nine countries covers the places most people need. It doesn’t cover the places some people need.
What Windscribe does with a small network: keeps costs down, which funds both the free tier and the per-country pricing. The trade-off is deliberate rather than accidental.

Speed: Consistent Across Every Test
Unlike some comparisons we’ve published, this one has no contradiction in the evidence.
Every source we checked put NordVPN ahead — on download speed, on upload, and across protocols.
CNET measured NordVPN at 2.9% average download loss, the best result in its lineup of thirty providers.
Windscribe doesn’t appear in those comparative rounds, and published reviews describe its performance as inconsistent on distant servers.
One practical note from testing: Windscribe was observed using an excessive amount of CPU resources compared with rivals — a detail that matters on older laptops and doesn’t show up in throughput numbers.
Winner: NordVPN, unanimously.
Price: Two Different Models
This is where comparison gets awkward, because they don’t price the same way.
NordVPN sells tiers — Basic, Plus, Complete, Prime — starting around $3.09 a month on a two-year plan. Renewal runs $139.08 a year.
Windscribe sells either a standard plan at roughly $5.75 a month annually, or Build a Plan: $1 per country location per month, minimum two, plus $1 for unlimited data.
The worked comparison. If you need US and UK only, Windscribe costs $3 a month billed monthly, with no annual commitment. NordVPN’s equivalent commitment is two years upfront.
If you need the full network, NordVPN’s per-country cost collapses and Windscribe’s doesn’t scale.

Published testing called this the one round where Windscribe drew level — a tie in the apps category attributed specifically to the unlimited connection policy.

Privacy: Depth Against Real-World Testing
Both matter, and they’re different kinds of evidence.
NordVPN: six independent no-logs audits by PwC and Deloitte with published summaries. Panama jurisdiction, outside every intelligence-sharing arrangement. RAM-only servers.
Windscribe: one Packetlabs audit in 2024, with sources disagreeing on whether it covered the logging claim specifically. Canada — a founding Five Eyes member. RAM-only servers too.
But Windscribe has something NordVPN doesn’t. In 2021, Ukrainian authorities seized two of its servers and found no user data. A 2025 court case in Greece reportedly tested the no-logs claim under legal pressure and Windscribe prevailed.
⚠️ That seizure also exposed a failure — those particular servers weren’t encrypted, which Windscribe disclosed openly and then rebuilt around.

Features: Different Philosophies

Windscribe carries unusual ones: R.O.B.E.R.T., a DNS blocker where you write the rules rather than accept a list. Time Warp, which alters your reported time zone to match your VPN location. Location Warp, which does the same for browser geolocation. Plus port forwarding, static IPs and MAC spoofing.

And a practical suggestion: Windscribe’s free tier costs nothing and requires no card. Testing it for a week tells you more about your own connection than any comparison including this one.
