Build a Plan: The Pricing Nobody Else Offers
Standard plans exist — about $9 a month, or roughly $5.75 monthly on an annual term.
But the interesting option is Build a Plan. You pay $1 per country location per month, minimum two locations, plus $1 for unlimited data.
A worked example. You want US and UK for streaming. That’s $2, plus $1 for unlimited data, so $3 a month billed monthly — no annual commitment.
Each location also adds 10 GB to your allowance if you skip the unlimited option.
⚠️ Who this suits: people who use a VPN for specific things rather than continuously. A monthly plan from most rivals runs $9 to $15 for a full network you won’t touch.
Who it doesn’t: anyone who switches countries often. Buying eight locations costs more than a standard plan.
The Free Tier Is Actually Usable
2 GB a month with no email address at all. 10 GB if you confirm one. 15 GB if you post about the service publicly.
Eleven country locations — North America, several European countries, and Hong Kong.
Most premium features are included: the firewall kill switch, split tunnelling, and R.O.B.E.R.T. ad and tracker blocking with three custom rules.
⚠️ What free users don’t get: reliable Netflix access. Published testing describes streaming platforms as mostly blocked on the free tier, though YouTube and general browsing work fine.
No injected ads, no data harvesting. The free tier is cross-subsidised by paying subscribers, the same model Proton VPN uses — and the opposite of how most free VPNs fund themselves.
The 2021 Server Seizure, and What It Revealed
In 2021, Ukrainian authorities seized two Windscribe servers as part of an investigation. This is the section that matters most, because it’s a real-world test rather than a paper policy.
What they found: no user data. Windscribe stores no session logs, no timestamps, no IP addresses, no browsing records.
What went wrong anyway. Published analysis established that those particular servers weren’t encrypted. In principle, authorities could have imitated the servers and monitored traffic passing through them during the window before Windscribe discovered the seizure.
⚠️ This was a genuine lapse, and one reviewer noted that if you consider it unforgivable for a privacy service, that’s a defensible position.
What Windscribe did about it. The company made no attempt to hide the mistake and published regular updates on the fix. It introduced short-lived certificates with 90-day expiry rotated every 75 days, moved encryption keys to memory only, and rebuilt its OpenVPN support so the same failure can’t repeat.
Our reading: the failure was real, the response was better than the industry norm, and the absence of user data confirmed the logging policy under conditions no audit reproduces.
Audits: Where Sources Disagree
Here’s a discrepancy worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over.
Packetlabs conducted an infrastructure audit in 2024, and published reports describe it as finding no major issues, confirming Windscribe doesn’t retain browsing histories.
But one 2026 review lists “lack of an independent no-logs audit” as a drawback — suggesting the 2024 engagement covered infrastructure rather than the logging claim specifically.

Separately, a 2025 court case in Greece reportedly tested the no-logs claim and Windscribe prevailed — verification of a kind that only happens under legal pressure.
How this compares. NordVPN has six no-logs audits with published summaries. Windscribe has less documentation and more real-world testing. Which you weigh more heavily is a genuine judgement call.

Also included: static IPs, MAC address spoofing, split tunnelling, and stealth protocol options that published reviews describe as effective on restrictive networks.
Unlimited simultaneous connections on every paid plan — matching Surfshark and IPVanish. Against Surfshark directly, the device count is the one category that ties.

Speed and Network
The network is small. Published figures cite roughly 480 servers across 69 countries, against NordVPN’s 9,000-plus. TechRadar counts 110 locations on paid plans. We put the two head to head, and that gap drives most of the result.
Speed reports vary. One review calls it seriously fast, another notes inconsistent performance on distant servers and specifically slow Mac speeds.
⚠️ Windscribe doesn’t appear in the major comparative benchmark rounds, so we can’t place it precisely against the providers we rank on speed — an absence worth naming rather than filling with guesswork.
Streaming is contested too. One source credits access to 32 Netflix regions plus Disney+ US; another reports difficulty with Netflix generally. The free tier is consistently described as blocked.
What We Don’t Love
Canadian jurisdiction. Canada is a founding Five Eyes member — the same structural concern we raised about IPVanish’s US base.
No live chat. Support runs through a bot named Garry and a ticket system, which published reviews describe as slower than competitors offering 24/7 human chat.
The interface is dense. Reviewers consistently describe it as feature-packed to the point of overwhelming newcomers.
The refund window is unclear. Published sources contradict each other — one states 30 days on paid plans, another states three days with a one-day trial. Read the terms at checkout rather than trusting any review, including this one.
Prices rose. The annual plan increased from about $4.08 to $5.75 a month, which published sources noted as a change rather than a promotion ending.
The network is genuinely small, and that shows on less common routes.
