Hotspot Shield vs PrivateVPN (2026): Convenience or Control

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

Hotspot Shield vs PrivateVPN sets convenience against control. Hotspot Shield wraps its Hydra protocol in one-tap apps with split tunnelling, a free plan and 45 days for refunds. PrivateVPN, a small Swedish service, instead gives you port forwarding, a SOCKS5 proxy and free dynamic dedicated IPs for around $2 a month on three years.

Neither has an independent no-logs audit in our sources. This guide compares tools, logging, price, platforms and fit.

Hotspot Shield vs PrivateVPN: Convenience or Control

Hotspot Shield suits people who want to connect and forget: its SmartVPN split tunnelling handles apps and sites on Windows and Android, and sites only on Mac. PrivateVPN suits people who configure their torrent client, open ports and set a proxy.

Decide which matters more to you before comparing anything else.

Hotspot Shield vs PrivateVPN on Logging and Torrenting

Hotspot Shield keeps session length, bandwidth, device hashes and your IP during a session, reviews of its policy note, and faced a 2017 complaint to the FTC. PrivateVPN has a clean public record but no audit, and runs its servers from disk.

For proof rather than promises, look instead at audited providers in our VPN audit tracker.

PrivateVPN’s built-in port forwarding and SOCKS5 make it the clear torrent pick here; Hotspot Shield offers neither in the sources we read.

Our torrenting guide covers audited alternatives with similar tools.

Price, and Fixed or Changing IP

PrivateVPN costs around $2 a month on its three-year plan with a 30-day refund. Hotspot Shield Premium costs $7.99 a month on a yearly plan, $12.99 monthly, with 45 days for refunds, and its renewal price is not printed, vpnprograms notes.

PrivateVPN is the cheaper long-term pick; Hotspot Shield’s free plan is the cheaper way to start using a VPN.

Hotspot Shield hands out a new IP at each connection, Security.org found. PrivateVPN includes free dynamic dedicated IPs, a 2026 review notes, useful for whitelisting or fewer CAPTCHAs.

If a stable address matters for work, banking or whitelisting, PrivateVPN covers it.

Network, Jurisdiction and Linux

Hotspot Shield lists about 1,800 servers in 80 countries, vpnprograms says, under US law. PrivateVPN runs about 200 servers in 63 countries in Sweden, part of the Fourteen Eyes.

Our Five Eyes guide explains the alliances.

Hotspot Shield’s Linux version is command-line only, with Hydra and no split tunnelling or kill switch, a 2026 review notes. Check PrivateVPN’s Linux options on its site before buying.

Linux users should test both carefully before committing.

Hotspot Shield vs PrivateVPN: who should pick which

Kill Switch, and Starting Out

AllAboutCookies found every Hotspot Shield plan includes a kill switch and split tunnelling, with a notification when the kill switch is active. Check PrivateVPN’s kill switch setting in its app before relying on it.

Test by switching Wi-Fi off and on while connected, then check your IP.

Hotspot Shield’s free Basic plan, 500 MB a day on a US location with ads, lets you try its apps at no cost. PrivateVPN has no free plan, so trying it means paying and relying on its 30-day refund.

Hotspot Shield is the easier service to sample without paying.

Streaming, and Who Should Avoid Both

Hotspot Shield’s free plan does not suit streaming, vpnprograms notes, so streaming needs Premium. PrivateVPN’s 63 countries offer fewer locations to try when a service blocks one.

Test your services within each refund window.

Anyone who needs audited proof of a no-logs policy should look elsewhere. Our Proton VPN vs PrivateVPN page compares PrivateVPN with a provider that has five annual audits.

For torrent tools with audits, our torrenting guide lists options.

Protocols

Hotspot Shield runs Hydra, a proprietary closed-source protocol, Tom’s Guide notes, alongside WireGuard and IKEv2. Its split tunnelling works only with Hydra, Cloudwards adds. Check which protocols PrivateVPN offers on your platform before buying.

Users who prefer open, well-studied protocols can switch to WireGuard on Hotspot Shield instead.

Devices, Platforms and Ownership

Hotspot Shield Premium allows 10 devices, one review notes; its free plan allows one and excludes routers and smart TVs, Tom’s Guide says. PrivateVPN allows 10 devices on its paid plans.

For a household, the two are level on device count once you pay for a plan.

Point Wild, formerly Pango and Aura, owns Hotspot Shield in the US. PrivateVPN is a small Swedish service outside the big VPN groups.

Our VPN ownership guide explains why owners matter.

Speed and Support

Hotspot Shield credits its speed to Hydra and WireGuard, a 2026 review says; we found no recent independent speed figures for PrivateVPN, so test it on your own line. Hotspot Shield’s free plan comes without one-on-one support, Tom’s Guide notes; Premium adds it.

Check PrivateVPN’s support channels during its refund window, especially for torrent client and router setups.

How We Research

This page draws on vpnprograms’ and Cloudwards’ Hotspot Shield reviews, Security.org’s notes on its IPs, a 2026 Hotspot Shield review on logging and Linux, and our PrivateVPN, audit and price tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Cloudwards’ Hotspot Shield review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
