Mullvad BBC iPlayer access is hit and miss. Comparitech’s August 2026 tests found Mullvad worked with iPlayer in about 38% of attempts, while keeping about 95% of connection speed on UK servers, and it was one of only two providers that did not succeed every time. Top10VPN found iPlayer blocked. Mullvad focuses on privacy and does not try to unblock streaming services, Top10VPN notes in its review.
This guide covers the results, what to try, the TV licence, alternatives and when Mullvad still makes sense.
What Testers Found
Comparitech’s 2026 quarter found most VPNs unblocked iPlayer every time; Mullvad and CyberGhost were the exceptions, though even they succeeded in at least 15% of tests, so Comparitech calls it a matter of persistence. Mullvad’s rate was 37.93%.
Top10VPN’s 2026 review found iPlayer, US Netflix and Hulu all blocked on Mullvad. Our BBC iPlayer VPN guide compares providers.

Mullvad BBC iPlayer: What to Try
Connect Mullvad to a UK server, open iPlayer in a private browser window and play something. If it shows the outside-the-UK message, disconnect, pick another UK server and try again.
With roughly a one-in-three success rate in Comparitech’s tests, expect to make a few attempts.

The TV Licence, and Speed When It Works
BBC iPlayer requires a UK TV licence for watching or downloading BBC programmes, whatever the connection. A VPN does not change that requirement or what the licence covers, wherever you connect from.
The BBC designs iPlayer for viewers in the UK, and its terms restrict viewing elsewhere.
Mullvad kept 95.39% of connection speed on UK servers in Comparitech’s tests, more than many rivals. When a server gets through, HD playback should be smooth.
Pick the UK server nearest you and leave DAITA off, since it adds padding traffic that slows streams.

Alternatives for iPlayer
Comparitech found most providers unblocked iPlayer every time, including IPVanish and ExpressVPN, and Cybernews names NordVPN, Surfshark, IPVanish, ExpressVPN and Proton VPN. If iPlayer is a priority, one of those will save the trial and error. Nord Security owns NordVPN and Surfshark; Kape owns ExpressVPN and CyberGhost.
Our NordVPN BBC iPlayer guide covers one.
When Mullvad Still Makes Sense, and Price
Mullvad suits people who put privacy first: no email to sign up, cash payments, and more than 10 audits in our table. If iPlayer is an occasional extra rather than the reason for a VPN, its success rate may be acceptable.
Our Mullvad Netflix guide covers another service.
Mullvad costs a flat €5 a month for five devices, with no long-term plans or discounts.
Test iPlayer early: Mullvad refunds within 14 days, except for cash and cryptocurrency payments, our tables record.
Other UK Services, Split Tunnelling and Downloads
Comparitech’s streaming lab marked Mullvad blocked for NOW in October 2026, and Top10VPN found most services blocked. Expect similar trial and error with ITVX and other UK apps.
Our Mullvad smart TV guide covers watching on a TV.
If you live in the UK and use Mullvad for privacy, split tunnelling on Windows, Android and Linux can keep iPlayer on your normal connection while everything else uses the VPN.
That avoids blocks entirely for viewers who are already in the UK and only want privacy elsewhere.
Why Mullvad Does Not Chase Streaming
Mullvad runs no streaming-labelled servers and no Smart DNS, and it does not market unblocking, Top10VPN notes. Its design choices, such as anonymous accounts and shared addresses, serve privacy rather than streaming.
That trade-off is deliberate, so do not expect Mullvad to change course for streaming.
Phones and Tablets
The iPlayer app on phones caches your location, so close it fully after switching Mullvad servers and check that it has no location permission. A private browser window is the quickest way to test a server.
Mullvad’s iPhone and Android apps run WireGuard only, which keeps reconnections quick after switching servers.
DAITA, Multihop and Checking It Works
Mullvad’s DAITA disguises traffic patterns and multihop routes through two servers. Neither changes how iPlayer sees your address, and both cost speed, so turn them off for streaming.
A plain connection to a single UK server gives the best chance of getting through.
Open a programme page and press play. If it starts, the server got through; if you see the outside-the-UK message, note the server and try another, since Comparitech’s results suggest some servers succeed where others fail.
Run a DNS leak test too, since a leak can reveal your real country to the BBC.
The iPlayer app lets you download programmes to watch offline for a limited time, subject to the TV licence. If a Mullvad server gets through, downloading several episodes at once saves repeated attempts later.
Downloaded programmes then play without any VPN connection at all.
How We Research
This page draws on Comparitech’s 2026 BBC iPlayer VPN tests and streaming lab, Top10VPN’s Mullvad review, Cybernews’ BBC iPlayer VPN guide and our Mullvad tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Comparitech’s BBC iPlayer VPN tests. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
