Mullvad vs VyprVPN (2026): DAITA or Chameleon, Proven or Past Audits

Mullvad vs VyprVPN compares two veteran privacy brands that defend against different threats. Mullvad’s DAITA feature pads traffic so observers cannot easily tell which sites you visit, and its no-logs claim has more than 10 audits in our table. VyprVPN’s Chameleon protocol disguises VPN traffic so networks struggle to block it, but its only audit was by Leviathan in 2018, before Certida bought it, fahimai notes.

This guide compares those tools, evidence, anonymity, price, devices and fit.

Traffic Analysis or Blocking

Both tools are niche: most home users need neither.

DAITA costs some speed, so leave it off for streaming.

DAITA, short for Defence Against AI-guided Traffic Analysis, adds padding and noise so the size and timing of your packets reveal less. Chameleon scrambles packet metadata so firewalls find VPN traffic harder to recognise, Impulsec notes.

If your worry is someone analysing your traffic, Mullvad fits; if your network blocks VPNs outright, VyprVPN’s Chameleon is built for that.

Mullvad vs VyprVPN on Evidence

Mullvad’s record goes beyond paperwork: in April 2023, Swedish police arrived with a warrant for customer data and left with nothing, CyberInsider reported. VyprVPN was among the first VPNs to publish a no-logs audit, but has had none since 2018, including after the change of owner.

For current evidence, Mullvad is far ahead. Our VPN audit tracker compares providers.

Anonymity

VyprVPN’s account ties your email to the service.

Anyone holding your Mullvad number can use your time, so store it safely.

Mullvad issues a random account number instead of asking for an email, and accepts cash by post or cryptocurrency. VyprVPN uses a standard email account.

For signing up without revealing who you are, Mullvad is the clear choice.

Price and Refunds

Ask for any refund in writing before the window closes.

Mullvad costs a flat €5 a month with no long plans, and refunds within 14 days except for cash and crypto. VyprVPN costs about $3 a month on two years, with some sites listing $10 monthly, and offers 30 days for refunds on first purchases, our tables record.

VyprVPN is cheaper on a two-year plan; Mullvad never changes its price. Our renewal price guide compares.

Devices and Servers

Owned servers give physical control, but only an audit confirms what they log.

Mullvad allows five devices per account. Recent reviews list 10 for VyprVPN, though older ones mention 30, and VyprVPN owns its servers rather than renting them, fahimai notes.

A router running either counts as one device and covers everything behind it.

Protocols

Mullvad also supports multihop, routing traffic through two servers in different countries for an extra layer.

At home, WireGuard is the fast default on both.

Mullvad has run WireGuard only since removing OpenVPN in January 2026, with multihop through two servers. VyprVPN supports WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 alongside Chameleon, Impulsec notes.

Routers that need OpenVPN or IKEv2 work with VyprVPN but not Mullvad.

Streaming and Owners

Mullvad’s design choices serve privacy rather than unblocking.

Mullvad does not try to unblock streaming, and testers found services such as BBC iPlayer often blocked. We found no recent streaming tests for VyprVPN in the sources we read.

Neither is a streaming-first choice; test any service you need within a refund window.

Mullvad publishes its audit reports on its own site.

Mullvad is an independent Swedish company with no affiliate programme. Certida owns VyprVPN after buying it from Golden Frog.

Ownership changes are a reason to look for fresh audits. Our VPN ownership guide explains why.

Who Each Is For, and Transparency

Mullvad suits journalists, activists and privacy-minded users who want anonymous sign-up, repeated audits and protection against traffic analysis. VyprVPN suits travellers who mainly need Chameleon to get past VPN blocks and want a low two-year price.

Match the tool to the threat you actually face.

Mullvad vs VyprVPN: who should pick which

Mullvad’s apps are open source, so outside experts can read how they handle data, and its audit reports are public. We found no comparable open-source claim for VyprVPN’s apps in our sources, and Chameleon is proprietary.

For transparency, Mullvad offers more to inspect.

Speed

Speed varies by location, so test from home.

Mullvad kept about 95% of connection speed on UK servers in Comparitech’s 2026 tests, with DAITA switched off. We found no recent independent speed figures for VyprVPN in our sources, so test it on your own connection during its refund window.

Compare at the same time of day for a fair result.

Mullvad’s DNS Change

Quad9 is now the default in Mullvad Browser.

Mullvad is closing its public encrypted DNS service on 2 November 2026 and recommends Quad9 instead; the DNS inside its VPN app keeps working. The change does not affect VyprVPN users. We put the two side by side in our VyprVPN vs TorGuard comparison.

Anyone using Mullvad’s public DNS without the VPN should switch before that date.

How We Research

This page draws on CyberInsider’s report on Mullvad’s 2023 police visit, Impulsec’s and fahimai’s VyprVPN coverage, Comparitech’s and Top10VPN’s streaming tests and our Mullvad tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is CyberInsider on Mullvad’s 2023 visit. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
