Hotspot Shield vs Norton VPN compares two US VPNs from companies best known for other security products. Hotspot Shield, owned by Point Wild in the US, has no independent no-logs audit, offers a free plan of 500 MB a day on a US location with ads, and charges $7.99 a month on a yearly Premium plan with 45 days for refunds. Norton VPN, from Gen Digital, has had its no-logs policy audited in 2024 and October 2025 and its Mimic protocol in December 2025, and offers 60 days for refunds, Tom’s Guide reports.

This guide compares evidence, free use, refunds, protocols, devices, price and fit.

Hotspot Shield vs Norton VPN on Evidence

Audits are snapshots in time. Yearly ones show practices holding.

Norton says its no-logs audit will now run every year, following reviews in 2024 and October 2025. Hotspot Shield has no independent no-logs audit, and its policy records session length, bandwidth and device hashes, a 2026 review notes; it also faced a 2017 FTC complaint over its free version.

On outside checks, Norton is clearly ahead. Our VPN audit tracker compares providers.

Free Use and Trials

Norton’s trial is the better way to test streaming.

A free plan shows how the apps feel. A trial unlocks the full service briefly.

Hotspot Shield’s free Basic plan gives 500 MB a day on a US location with ads, and runs at about 2 Mbps, a 2026 review notes. Norton has no free plan but offers a seven-day free trial, Experte notes.

For ongoing free use, Hotspot Shield is the only option; for a full test, Norton’s trial goes further.

Hotspot Shield vs Norton VPN: Refunds

A longer window gives time to test on every device you own, including TVs.

Ask in writing before the window closes.

Norton gives 60 days for refunds, twice ExpressVPN’s 30 days. Hotspot Shield Premium gives 45 days.

Both are generous; Norton gives more time to test streaming and speed on every device.

Protocols

At home, WireGuard is the fast default on both.

Hotspot Shield runs its proprietary Hydra protocol alongside WireGuard and IKEv2, and its split tunnelling works only with Hydra, Cloudwards notes. Norton offers WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPSec and its Mimic protocol, which disguises VPN traffic as HTTPS, though its Mac app lacks WireGuard and OpenVPN.

For restrictive networks, Norton’s Mimic is the more specialised tool.

Price

Compare renewal prices before you commit to either.

Set a reminder before any renewal.

Hotspot Shield Premium costs $7.99 a month on a yearly plan, $12.99 monthly, and its renewal price is not printed, vpnprograms notes. Norton Plus costs $29.99 for the first year, Tom’s Guide lists, and Standard renews at $79.99, Security.org notes.

Norton is cheaper in the first year. Our renewal price guide explains why renewals matter.

Devices and Owners

A router covers devices without apps.

Hotspot Shield Premium allows 10 devices, one review notes, and its free plan one. Norton’s Standard and Plus plans allow five, and Ultimate allows 10.

Households with six to 10 devices fit Hotspot Shield Premium without upgrading tiers.

Both groups sell other security products too.

Point Wild, formerly Pango and Aura, owns Hotspot Shield. Gen Digital owns Norton alongside Avast, Avira, AVG and CCleaner, and Norton’s policy allows sharing data within the group, Security.org notes.

Our VPN ownership guide explains why owners matter.

Who Each Is For

Both are simple to set up, so the choice comes down to proof and refund length.

Hotspot Shield suits people who want a free daily allowance and simple, fast apps. Norton suits people who want audited privacy, a long refund window, Mimic and a cheap first year, especially Norton 360 users.

If you already pay for Norton 360, check whether it includes the VPN.

Hotspot Shield vs Norton VPN: who should pick which

Kill Switch and Split Tunnelling

AllAboutCookies found every Hotspot Shield plan includes a kill switch, with a notification when it is active, and its SmartVPN split tunnelling covers apps and sites on Windows and Android and sites only on Mac, vpnprograms notes. Norton offers split tunnelling on Windows and Android only, without an inverse mode.

Test any kill switch by switching Wi-Fi off and on while connected.

Streaming and Linux

For streaming on a TV, Hotspot Shield Premium or Norton both need a paid plan.

Hotspot Shield’s free plan does not suit streaming, vpnprograms notes, so streaming needs Premium. Tom’s Guide highlights Norton VPN’s strong streaming unblocking.

Test the services you use within each refund window.

Hotspot Shield’s Linux version is command-line only, with Hydra and no split tunnelling or kill switch, a 2026 review notes. We found no Norton VPN app for Linux in our sources. Our TunnelBear vs Norton VPN comparison sets the two side by side.

Linux users have limited options with both.

How We Research

This page draws on vpnprograms’, AllAboutCookies’ and Cloudwards’ Hotspot Shield reviews, a 2026 Hotspot Shield review on logging, Tom’s Guide’s reports on Norton VPN’s 2025 changes, Experte’s Norton test and Security.org’s Norton coverage. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Tom’s Guide on Norton VPN’s 2025 changes. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
