Hotspot Shield vs AirVPN (2026): Closed Convenience or Open-Source Control

Hotspot Shield vs AirVPN is a contrast between a closed, consumer-friendly VPN and an open, technical one. AirVPN, founded in 2010 by a collective of privacy activists, hackers and two lawyers, TechAdvisor reports, runs the open-source Eddie client, needs no email and forwards up to 20 ports, ProPrivacy notes. Hotspot Shield, from Point Wild, relies on its closed-source Hydra protocol and offers a free daily allowance. Neither has an independent no-logs audit in our sources.

This guide compares openness, ports, anonymity, censorship, apps, price and fit.

Hotspot Shield vs AirVPN on Openness

AirVPN’s Eddie client is open source and shows live load, users and bandwidth for each server, so you can see how the network behaves. Hotspot Shield’s Hydra protocol is closed-source, Tom’s Guide notes, so outsiders cannot inspect it as easily.

For people who want to see under the hood, AirVPN offers far more.

Hotspot Shield vs AirVPN compared on openness, ports and anonymity

Evidence

Open code is not an audit, but it lets outsiders check the client.

Neither has a full no-logs audit. AirVPN’s public record includes its 2024 decision to stop serving users in Italy rather than apply the Piracy Shield blocklists, our review notes. Hotspot Shield’s policy records session length, bandwidth and device hashes, and it faced a 2017 FTC complaint.

Our VPN audit tracker lists providers with outside checks.

Ports and Torrenting

Bind your torrent client to the VPN and check its IP before downloading.

AirVPN lets you forward up to 20 ports, which suits torrent clients, game servers and self-hosted sites, ProPrivacy notes. We found no port forwarding for Hotspot Shield in our sources.

Torrent users and self-hosters should choose AirVPN. Our torrenting guide lists others.

Anonymity

Hotspot Shield’s free plan also carries ads, which AirVPN’s paid service does not.

Tor routing adds anonymity at a large cost in speed.

AirVPN needs no email and accepts several cryptocurrencies, and Eddie can route connections through Tor, ProPrivacy notes. Hotspot Shield offers no anonymous way to pay, a 2026 review notes.

For anonymous use, AirVPN is clearly ahead.

Censored Networks

At home, neither feature matters much.

Test from the network you will use before relying on it abroad.

AirVPN can run OpenVPN over TCP port 443, the port used by ordinary secure web traffic, and Gizmodo found it reliable in China in 2026. We found no comparable obfuscation or China rating for Hotspot Shield.

Travellers to filtered countries should lean towards AirVPN.

Ease of Use

AirVPN’s Android app does include Eddie, vpnpro notes.

Eddie has 12 tabs of settings, Cloudwards found, and there is no Eddie client on iOS, so iPhone users rely on standard OpenVPN or WireGuard apps. Hotspot Shield’s apps connect with one tap and include split tunnelling on Windows and Android.

Beginners will find Hotspot Shield far simpler to use day to day.

Price, Testing and Devices

Hotspot Shield has a free plan of 500 MB a day, and Premium costs $7.99 a month on a yearly plan with 45 days for refunds. AirVPN works out to about $4.31 a month on a one-year plan, Cloudwards notes, and sells a three-day plan for testing; its refund position is unclear, our review found.

Hotspot Shield is easier to try risk-free; AirVPN’s three-day plan is cheap to test.

Count every device before choosing.

Hotspot Shield Premium allows 10 devices; AirVPN allows five, ProPrivacy notes. A router running AirVPN can cover a whole home.

Households with six to 10 devices fit Hotspot Shield without a router.

Who Each Is For

Try Hotspot Shield free, or AirVPN’s three-day plan, before committing.

AirVPN suits technical users, torrent users, self-hosters and people who want anonymity and open-source tools. Hotspot Shield suits people who want simple apps, a free daily allowance and a long refund window.

Both are long-running services with very different philosophies about users.

Hotspot Shield vs AirVPN: who should pick which

Platforms

Eddie runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, vpnpro notes; on iOS, AirVPN users rely on standard OpenVPN or WireGuard apps. Hotspot Shield’s Linux version is command-line only, without split tunnelling or a kill switch, a 2026 review notes, and its free plan excludes routers and smart TVs.

Linux users get a fuller desktop client from AirVPN.

Protocols and Kill Switch

AirVPN supports WireGuard and OpenVPN, including OpenVPN over unusual ports such as TCP 22 and 443, Gizmodo notes, and Eddie’s Network Lock blocks traffic outside the tunnel. AllAboutCookies found every Hotspot Shield plan includes a kill switch, with a notification when it is active.

Test either by switching Wi-Fi off and on while connected.

Who Runs Each

AirVPN still describes itself as run by activists and hacktivists, and it remains based in Perugia, Italy. Point Wild, formerly Pango and Aura, owns Hotspot Shield in the US.

That difference shows in their priorities: control and anonymity on one side, mass-market ease on the other.

How We Research

This page draws on Cloudwards’, ProPrivacy’s, Gizmodo’s and TechAdvisor’s AirVPN reviews, our AirVPN review, and vpnprograms’, AllAboutCookies’ and Tom’s Guide’s Hotspot Shield reviews. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Cloudwards’ AirVPN review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
