TorGuard vs StrongVPN compares two US services that serve different power users. StrongVPN, launched in 2005 and now owned by Ziff Davis, offers Smart DNS for consoles, 12 devices and the lowest local ping of 59 VPNs in Top10VPN’s 2026 tests. TorGuard offers open ports on request, Stealth proxies and plans for up to 30 devices. Neither has an independent no-logs audit in our sources.

This guide compares tools, living-room devices, censorship, devices, price and fit.

TorGuard vs StrongVPN: Different Power Users

Smart DNS adds no encryption, so it suits streaming rather than privacy.

StrongVPN’s strengths serve the living room and gaming: Smart DNS lets a console or smart TV reach streaming services without an app, and its ping is very low. TorGuard’s strengths serve self-hosters and travellers: open ports, dedicated IPs and Stealth proxies.

Decide which kind of power user you are first.

TorGuard vs StrongVPN compared on tools, devices and evidence

Evidence

Weigh that carefully before paying.

Neither publishes a recent third-party report in our sources.

An audit checks systems against the policy; without one, you rely on the company’s word.

StrongVPN has no audit in our table, and Top10VPN notes its apps are unaudited and lack post-quantum encryption. TorGuard has no independent no-logs audit, fahimai notes.

If proof matters, look elsewhere. Our VPN audit tracker lists audited providers.

Torrenting and Home Servers

Pick a non-US TorGuard server for torrents.

Secure any service you expose through an open port.

TorGuard lets you request open ports from its dashboard, Security.org notes, useful for torrent clients and remote access, though it blocks BitTorrent on US servers. We found no port forwarding for StrongVPN in our sources.

Self-hosters and torrent users should pick TorGuard on a non-US server.

Censored Networks and Devices

At home, stealth tools are rarely needed.

Test from the network you will use before travelling.

TorGuard’s Stealth protocols and proxy got past firewalls in China, Russia and Turkey in TechRepublic’s test. We found no comparable obfuscation feature for StrongVPN in our sources.

For filtered countries, TorGuard is the stronger choice.

Count every phone, laptop, TV and console first.

TorGuard’s plans cover 8, 12 or 30 devices; StrongVPN covers 12.

For a very large network, TorGuard’s top tier goes furthest.

Price and Refunds

Avoid StrongVPN’s monthly plan if you want a safety net.

StrongVPN costs $47.69 for its first year, then $89.99, and refunds only yearly plans within 30 days; its $11.99 monthly plan gets none. TorGuard starts around $10.99 a month, and its three-year Pro plan works out to $6.94 a month, Security.org notes.

Apps and Kill Switch

Switch on the kill switch yourself on StrongVPN, since it ships off.

Repeat the test after any app update.

StrongVPN’s kill switch is off by default, Top10VPN notes, and its split tunnelling works only on Android. TorGuard offers two kinds of kill switch but no split tunnelling, Security.org notes.

Turn on and test the kill switch on whichever you choose.

Who Each Is For, and Protocols

StrongVPN suits gamers and console owners who want Smart DNS, low ping and 12 devices. TorGuard suits self-hosters, torrent users and travellers to filtered countries who want open ports and stealth.

Owners differ: Ziff Davis for StrongVPN, VPNetworks LLC for TorGuard.

TorGuard vs StrongVPN: who should pick which

StrongVPN uses WireGuard by default and also offers OpenVPN and IKEv2, plus a WireGuard configuration generator. TorGuard adds SSTP, OpenVPN obfuscation and OpenConnect for restrictive networks, TechRepublic notes.

At home, WireGuard on either is the fast default.

Streaming and Routers

Test the services you rely on within any refund window.

A router-level VPN covers every device behind it as one connection.

StrongVPN works best for US services, Top10VPN found, unblocking HBO Max on the first attempt, and TorGuard’s Pro plan includes a streaming IP, TechRepublic notes. For routers, StrongVPN offers its WireGuard generator and TorGuard an OpenWrt app.

Both suit households that want a router-level VPN.

Linux

A router-level VPN also covers Linux devices.

TorGuard offers a Linux app with WireGuard, our tables record. Reviewers disagree on StrongVPN: Cloudwards lists a Linux desktop app, while Comparitech does not name one, and StrongVPN’s WireGuard generator works with Linux setups.

Linux users should check StrongVPN’s download page first.

Buying and Support

Phone support helps with port and router setups.

Nearly every TorGuard review flags its checkout as confusing, fahimai notes, though it offers email, help-desk and phone support, its Capterra listing says. StrongVPN refunds only yearly plans within 30 days.

Read both order pages carefully before paying.

Who Should Avoid Both

Pick by the job you need done.

Anyone who needs audited proof of a no-logs policy should look at providers with repeated outside checks; our audit tracker lists them. Neither StrongVPN nor TorGuard has one in our sources. We put the two side by side in our StrongVPN vs FastestVPN comparison.

Both remain strong picks for their particular jobs.

How We Research

This page draws on Top10VPN’s StrongVPN review, Security.org’s and TechRepublic’s TorGuard reviews and fahimai’s TorGuard coverage. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Top10VPN’s StrongVPN review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
