ExpressVPN Valorant results were good in VPNOverview’s 2026 tests: about 435 Mbps on Lightway and pings of 31 to 37 ms when it played through German, Swedish, Dutch and British servers. Riot’s terms do not mention VPNs, the same review notes, but Riot’s Vanguard anti-cheat fingerprints hardware, and one reported case describes a permanent ban after a player toggled a VPN mid-match. Riot locks your account region, so a VPN does not move it.
This guide covers ping, Riot’s position, Vanguard, region rules, setup and DDoS protection.
What Testers Found, and Choosing a Server
VPNOverview measured ExpressVPN at about 435 Mbps on Lightway and saw pings of 31 to 37 ms on European servers. Speed matters little for Valorant; latency and stability do.
Distance to the game server decides ping, so a nearby location keeps it low in every match. Our Valorant VPN guide compares providers.

Riot’s Rules and Vanguard
Riot’s terms of service do not mention VPNs, VPNOverview notes, and reviewers broadly say Riot tolerates legitimate use. Riot’s Vanguard anti-cheat runs at kernel level and fingerprints hardware, so a VPN cannot get around a hardware ban, and trying to evade bans can lead to suspension, a 2026 guide warns.
Since 24 June 2026, Vanguard runs only while a Riot game is open, Wikipedia’s entry notes.
Avoid Toggling Mid-Match
One reported case describes a Valorant player permanently banned after switching a VPN on and off several times during a match to test ping. It is a single account, but it shows that sudden network changes mid-game can look suspicious.
Connect before launching the game, and leave the connection alone until you quit the Riot Client completely.

Your Account Region Is Fixed, and Price
Riot locks an account to the region where it was created, Gizmodo notes, so connecting to another country does not change where your account plays ranked. Connecting to another region’s servers mostly adds ping.
Using a VPN to reach lower-skilled lobbies elsewhere breaks Riot’s rules, one 2026 test warns.
ExpressVPN Valorant Setup
Install the Windows app, choose Lightway and connect to the location nearest you or your Riot region, then launch the Riot Client. Turn on Network Lock so a dropped tunnel does not expose your IP.
Split tunnelling can keep Valorant outside the tunnel while chat and browser stay inside, if you want the lowest ping.

DDoS, Streamers, Voice Chat and NAT
Streamers sometimes face DDoS attacks once their IP leaks. Hiding the home address is the strongest reason for a VPN in Valorant, and ExpressVPN presents its network as protection for gamers.
Our ExpressVPN Fortnite guide covers similar questions for another game.
Pick the ExpressVPN location nearest the Riot data centre for your region, or simply the one nearest to you. VPNOverview’s 31 to 37 ms came from European servers close to its testers.
Compare in-game ping with the VPN on and off before ranked play, at the same time of day.
Valorant’s voice chat can struggle behind strict NAT, and a VPN may change your NAT type. If teammates cannot hear you, test once without the VPN to find the cause.
Split tunnelling can keep Valorant on your normal connection while the rest stays protected, which often fixes chat issues.
ExpressVPN’s Basic plan renews at $99.95 a year for 10 devices, our tables record, and new users get 30 days to ask for a refund.
ExpressVPN lists 27 independent audits by May 2026; Kape owns it along with CyberGhost and PIA.
What Vanguard Is, and Why Latency Matters
Vanguard is Riot’s kernel-level anti-cheat, launched with Valorant on 7 April 2020, Wikipedia records. Since June 2026 it can run only while a Riot game is open, rather than from Windows start-up.
It looks for cheats and suspicious behaviour, which is why a stable connection set up before you play matters.
Valorant uses little bandwidth, so ExpressVPN’s 435 Mbps in VPNOverview’s test matters less than its 31 to 37 ms pings. Jitter and packet loss affect shooting far more than download speed.
A wired connection reduces both, with or without the VPN.
Playing While Travelling
Your Riot account stays tied to its creation region, so abroad you will still matchmake there, often with high ping. A VPN cannot shorten the physical distance to your home region’s servers.
Use it abroad for privacy on hotel or dorm networks rather than for better ping, and keep expectations realistic.
Checking for Leaks
After connecting, check an IP site to confirm your address shows the ExpressVPN location, and run a WebRTC test in the browser. A leak would expose the home IP you are trying to hide from other players. For every US location worked for one tester, see our page on ExpressVPN for Peacock.
Repeat the check after app updates or protocol changes.
How We Research
This page draws on VPNOverview’s 2026 Valorant VPN tests, a 2026 Valorant guide on Vanguard, Gizmodo’s Valorant region guide, a reported ban case, Riot Vanguard’s Wikipedia entry and our ExpressVPN tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is VPNOverview’s Valorant VPN tests. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
ExpressVPN Valorant FAQ
Yes; VPNOverview saw 31 to 37 ms pings on European servers.
Its terms do not mention VPNs, but ban evasion leads to suspension.
No; Riot locks accounts to their creation region.
Better not; one reported ban followed mid-match toggling.
It cannot; Vanguard fingerprints hardware.
The Verdict
ExpressVPN Valorant use is fine for privacy and DDoS protection on a nearby server. Do not toggle it mid-match or use it to dodge bans or regions.
