ExpressVPN vs Norton VPN on Evidence

ExpressVPN’s 27 audits by May 2026 include three KPMG no-logs reports and Cure53 tests of its apps and Lightway protocol. Norton VPN’s second no-logs audit came out in October 2025, and its Mimic protocol passed its first third-party audit in December 2025, Tom’s Guide reports.

ExpressVPN’s record is far deeper and longer. Our VPN audit tracker compares providers.

Owners and Data Sharing

Neither ownership structure is unusual in the VPN market, where large groups now own many well-known brands.

Gen Digital owns Norton alongside Avast, Avira, AVG, CCleaner and LifeLock, and Norton’s privacy policy allows sharing data with partners inside the group, Security.org notes. Kape owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost and PIA, plus review sites including vpnMentor and Wizcase. Our CyberGhost vs Norton VPN comparison sets the two side by side.

Both groups have wide portfolios; read each privacy policy. Our ExpressVPN safety guide covers Kape’s history.

ExpressVPN vs Norton VPN: Protocols and Devices

ExpressVPN uses its own Lightway protocol, with post-quantum key exchange. Norton offers WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPSec and its own Mimic stealth protocol, though its Mac app lacks WireGuard and OpenVPN, Tom’s Guide notes.

Mac users get more protocol choice from ExpressVPN.

60-day refund

ExpressVPN’s Basic plan covers 10 devices. Norton’s Standard and Plus plans cover five, and Ultimate covers 10, Security.org lists.

For five or fewer devices, Norton’s cheaper plans fit well.

Price and Refunds

A 60-day refund gives twice as long as ExpressVPN’s 30 days to test streaming, speed and apps on every device you own.

Norton Standard costs $39.99 for the first year and $79.99 after, and Norton gives 60 days for refunds plus a seven-day trial, Tom’s Guide notes. ExpressVPN renews at $99.95 a year and gives 30 days for refunds.

Norton is cheaper and has the longer refund window of the two.

Split Tunnelling and Bundles

Norton offers split tunnelling on Windows and Android only, without an inverse mode, Security.org and PCWorld note. ExpressVPN offers split tunnelling on several platforms, our tables record.

Check split tunnelling support on the device you use most.

Norton VPN is also bundled in Norton 360 security suites, which suits people who already use Norton antivirus. ExpressVPN sells the VPN on its own, with optional extras.

If you already pay for Norton 360, check whether a VPN is included before buying.

ExpressVPN vs Norton VPN: who should pick which

Mimic and Censorship

Obfuscation hides the fact that you are using a VPN, which matters in countries or on networks that block VPN traffic, and less so at home.

Norton’s Mimic protocol disguises VPN traffic as ordinary HTTPS and reached iOS in June 2025, after Mac, Windows and Android, Tom’s Guide reports. Its engineering director says Mimic sees significant use in certain regions.

ExpressVPN’s Lightway is its default protocol; check its current guidance before travelling to a censored country.

Norton’s Plans and Apple Devices

Tom’s Guide lists Norton VPN Plus at $29.99 for the first year with five devices and a 60-day refund. Security.org lists Standard at $39.99 for the first year, renewing at $79.99, and Ultimate covering 10 devices.

Check which tier includes the device count you need before paying.

Norton’s apps have fewer features on Apple devices, Tom’s Guide notes, and its Mac app lacks WireGuard and OpenVPN. ExpressVPN runs Lightway across Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.

Mac and iPhone users will get noticeably more from ExpressVPN’s apps.

Who Each Is For

Both are mainstream, easy-to-use services, so the choice usually comes down to how much the audit gap and the price gap matter to you.

People who want the deepest audit record and strong apps on every platform fit ExpressVPN. Norton 360 users and anyone wanting a cheap first year with a long refund window fit Norton VPN.

If you already pay for Norton 360, check whether it includes the VPN.

Extras

Norton adds IP Rotation and Double VPN to its apps, Tom’s Guide notes. ExpressVPN focuses on its Lightway protocol, TrustedServer infrastructure and Network Lock kill switch.

Compare the extras you would actually use day to day, not the longest list.

Audits Ahead

Norton says its no-logs audit will now take place every year, following audits in 2024 and October 2025, Tom’s Guide reports. ExpressVPN already runs regular audits, with three KPMG no-logs reports by February 2025.

Norton’s record is growing each year; ExpressVPN’s is already long.

How We Research

This page draws on Tom’s Guide’s reports on Norton VPN’s 2025 changes, Security.org’s Norton coverage, PCWorld’s Norton review, ExpressVPN’s trust pages and our audit and price tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Tom’s Guide on Norton VPN’s 2025 changes. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
