ExpressVPN and YouTube (2026): Regional Videos, YouTube TV and Local Channels

An ExpressVPN YouTube setup covers two different things. On regular YouTube, a VPN changes which country’s region-restricted videos and trending lists you see. YouTube TV is the US live TV service. Gizmodo’s October 2026 test from Europe found ExpressVPN one of three VPNs that unlocked its cable channels and a local ABC station. Local channels also needed a US browser location. Our guide to ExpressVPN and YouTube TV covers home area, playback area and local channels.

This guide covers both, the location trick for local channels, payment rules, speed and what a VPN does not change.

Regular YouTube

Some videos are blocked in certain countries by the uploader or by rights holders. YouTube then shows a message that the video is not available in your country. Connecting to a server in a country where a video is available lets it play, and trending and recommendations shift to that country.

Comparitech lists YouTube among the services ExpressVPN unblocked in its full review. Our YouTube VPN guide explains the basics.

ExpressVPN YouTube: regular YouTube compared with YouTube TV

YouTube TV

YouTube TV is a separate, US-only service with rules of its own: it needs a US connection, a US payment card and a home ZIP code, and local channels also check the location your browser reports. In Gizmodo’s October 2026 test, ExpressVPN unlocked both cable and local channels on the 20-minute free preview. Our ExpressVPN and YouTube TV guide covers the home area, local channels and TV apps step by step.

ExpressVPN YouTube Speed

Gizmodo recorded 177 Mbps on one ExpressVPN US server. That is plenty for 4K YouTube or several YouTube TV streams at once. On regular YouTube, pick a nearby server unless you need another country. Extra distance always costs some speed.

Lightway, ExpressVPN’s default protocol, suits streaming on phones and TVs, and it switches networks quickly on mobile data.

ExpressVPN YouTube: what a VPN changes compared with what it does not

What a VPN Does Not Change on YouTube

A VPN does not remove YouTube ads at all. Nor does it change YouTube Premium’s rules, which tie pricing to your country and payment method. Buying it at another country’s price through a VPN may conflict with YouTube’s terms.

It also hides your viewing from your internet provider and others on shared Wi-Fi, which is a real privacy benefit in itself.

Creators and Regional Testing

A VPN also lets creators and marketers check how a video or ad appears in another country, including whether it is region-blocked. Connect to the country, open YouTube in a private window and search as a viewer there would, noting which results appear.

Signed-in Google accounts carry their own country settings, so a private window gives the cleanest view of what local viewers see.

Privacy on YouTube

A VPN hides your IP address from YouTube and your viewing from your internet provider. If you are signed in to a Google account, though, YouTube still knows who you are and keeps your watch history.

For more privacy, watch while signed out or pause watch history in your Google account settings, and clear cookies between sessions.

On TVs and Sticks

ExpressVPN has apps for Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV, so YouTube and YouTube TV apps there run through the VPN. For TVs without apps, a router running ExpressVPN works.

Our ExpressVPN Chromecast guide covers Google TV devices. Streaming services license content by country, and their terms may restrict viewing outside your region; a VPN does not change what your subscription allows.

Price and Refund

ExpressVPN’s Basic plan renews at $99.95 a year for 10 devices, our tables record. New users get 30 days to ask for a refund. Gizmodo notes the Basic plan works out to about $3 a month when prepaid for 28 months.

Test YouTube TV on its free preview within that window before committing to either subscription, using the device you will watch on.

How We Research

This page draws on Gizmodo’s October 2026 YouTube TV VPN tests, Comparitech’s ExpressVPN review and our ExpressVPN tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Gizmodo’s YouTube TV VPN tests. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
