The Mullvad cost is one number: €5 a month, its terms of service say, whatever method you use and however long you buy for. There are no annual discounts, no first-term promotions and no renewal jump. Security.org notes the price has not risen since Mullvad launched in 2009. In dollars, the yearly total comes to about $65 by our table, depending on the exchange rate.
This guide covers what €5 buys, how it compares over time, every payment method and the refund rules. It also explains who the flat price suits.
What €5 a Month Buys
Every account gets the full service: five devices, WireGuard with quantum-resistant tunnels, DAITA, multihop and every server location. There are no tiers and no add-ons, so a feature on one account is on every account.
Mullvad issues an account number instead of asking for an email, and you add time to that number. When the time runs out, the account simply stops until you add more; nothing renews automatically unless you set it up. Our Mullvad Android guide shows the features on a phone.

Mullvad Cost Over Time
Because the price never changes, a year costs €60, about $65 by our table, and four years about €240. Providers with promotional pricing often look cheaper in year one and dearer afterwards, as our renewal price guide shows.
For a single month, Mullvad is cheaper than most rivals’ monthly plans, since they charge a premium for short terms. For a long commitment, a rival’s multi-year deal can cost less up front, though renewal usually narrows the gap.
Payment Methods
Mullvad’s terms list cash sent by post in nine currencies, including euros, dollars and pounds. They also list Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Monero, credit card, SEPA transfer, PayPal, in-app purchase on iOS, Mullvad vouchers and Swish. PCWorld also lists EPS, Bancontact, iDEAL and Przelewy24.
The price is the same whichever you choose; one month equals €5 when bought directly from Mullvad, the terms say. App Store purchases may be priced differently by Apple.

Paying Privately
Cash by post leaves no digital trail between your bank and your account. Security.org found it took 7 to 14 business days to process, so plan ahead. In its test, Bitcoin arrived in about an hour and Monero in about 20 minutes.
Include the payment token Mullvad gives you with the cash, PCWorld describes, and send it to Mullvad’s Swedish office. Our guide to whether a VPN can be traced explains why payment trails matter.

The Refund Rules
Mullvad’s terms allow a refund within 14 days of payment and exclude cash and cryptocurrency payments. App Store and reseller purchases must be refunded through the store or reseller.
Some reviews, including TechRadar’s, describe a 30-day window and occasional Bitcoin refunds. Our own table said 30 days until we checked the terms. The terms are the source to trust, so test within 14 days if you pay by card or PayPal.
Buying Through the App Store
Mullvad’s terms list in-app purchase on iOS as a payment route. The terms guarantee the €5 rate only for direct purchases, so in-app prices may differ, and refunds for App Store purchases go through Apple, not Mullvad.
Buying directly from mullvad.net guarantees the €5 rate and keeps your payment details away from Apple. Our VPN refund guide explains how store refunds differ.
Devices and Value
Five devices per account is lower than providers with 10 or unlimited devices. A household with more devices can buy a second account, which doubles the cost, or put Mullvad on a router, which counts as one device. Our guide to Mullvad on Linux covers the repository, the CLI and Mullvad browser.
Measured per device, Mullvad is not the cheapest. Measured per unit of privacy, with more than 10 audits in our table and a police visit that found nothing, it is hard to match. Our guide to Mullvad on iPhone covers WireGuard only, multihop modes and no split tunnelling.
No Free Plan or Trial
Mullvad has no free plan and no free trial today; PCRisk notes it briefly offered a limited trial in the past, and now relies on the refund window instead. The 14-day refund on card and PayPal payments is the closest thing to a trial, and a single month at €5 keeps the risk small. Our guide to Mullvad’s free options covers what you can use without paying.
If you want to try a privacy-focused VPN free first, Proton VPN’s free plan is the nearest option. Our Proton VPN free guide covers it.
Who the Flat Price Suits
It suits people who want a VPN for a month or two at a time, privacy-minded users who pay in cash or cryptocurrency, and anyone who dislikes renewal surprises. Our guide to Mullvad on Mac covers DAITA, multihop and split tunnelling on macOS.
Travellers who need a VPN for one trip also fit, since a single month costs €5 and nothing renews. Large households fit less well, since five devices is a firm limit. Our IPVanish vs Mullvad page compares Mullvad with an unlimited-device rival.
How We Research
This page draws on Mullvad’s terms of service, Security.org’s and PCWorld’s Mullvad reviews, TechRadar’s Mullvad review and our Mullvad tables, which we corrected on the refund rules. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Mullvad’s terms of service. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
