A SOCKS5 ExpressVPN proxy does not exist: ExpressVPN supports neither SOCKS5 nor port forwarding in its apps, a 2026 review notes. People usually want SOCKS5 for a torrent client or one app with a different address. ExpressVPN covers those needs another way, with split tunnelling on Windows, Android and Linux and P2P allowed on every server.

No Proxy, by Design
ExpressVPN sells a full VPN with apps for every major platform and does not run SOCKS5 servers anywhere on its network. A streaming and speed review from 2026 lists the missing SOCKS5 proxy and port forwarding among its drawbacks for power users.

Split Tunnelling Instead of SOCKS5 ExpressVPN Routing
To send only one app through ExpressVPN, or keep one app out, use split tunnelling. Our tables record it on Windows, Android and Linux, where you choose apps to include or exclude.
That covers the most common SOCKS5 use, a torrent client with a different address, and adds encryption the proxy lacks. It also keeps the rest of the computer on your normal connection if you want.
Torrent Clients, Leaks and Kill Switch
ExpressVPN allows P2P on every server, so run the app and bind your client to its network interface in qBittorrent’s advanced settings. Network Lock stops traffic if the tunnel drops.

Browser Extensions and MediaStreamer Are Not Proxies
ExpressVPN’s Chrome, Firefox and Edge browser extensions control the desktop app rather than acting as standalone proxies; they need the app on Windows, Mac or Linux, our tables record. The whole computer’s traffic still goes through the VPN.
So there is no way to give only the browser a separate ExpressVPN address with an extension alone; the extension and app share one connection.
MediaStreamer, ExpressVPN’s smart DNS, helps TVs and consoles reach streaming services, but it changes DNS lookups only and adds no encryption. It is not a SOCKS5 replacement for apps on a computer.

Why People Ask for SOCKS5
Torrent users like SOCKS5 because it gives one client a different address with little speed cost. Others use it in apps such as messaging clients that allow a proxy setting.
With ExpressVPN, the same results come from the app plus split tunnelling, at the cost of a little speed for full encryption.
A proxy can leak around itself through DHT or IPv6 in a torrent client. A full VPN with Network Lock blocks traffic if the tunnel drops, which a proxy on its own cannot do.

Providers That Still Offer SOCKS5, and Price
IPVanish runs a SOCKS5 proxy on more than 25 servers in 14 countries. Mullvad’s proxy works only inside its VPN tunnel, and Windscribe discontinued its SOCKS5 servers in April 2022.

Speed Without a Proxy, and Checking Your Setup
The usual argument for SOCKS5 is speed, since it skips encryption. ExpressVPN’s Lightway is light enough that the difference is small on a nearby server, and WireGuard is now an option on Windows, iOS and Android too.
Pick the nearest location and Lightway over UDP for torrents, updates and other large downloads.
For a torrent client, load a torrent IP checker’s magnet link and confirm the address shown is an ExpressVPN one. For other apps, visit an IP check site with split tunnelling set up exactly as you intend.
If your real address appears, check that you included the app in the tunnel and turned Network Lock on.
Apps With a Proxy Setting, Routers and Port Forwarding
Messaging and email apps that accept a SOCKS5 proxy setting have nothing to point at, since ExpressVPN has no proxy address. Include those apps in split tunnelling instead, so they use the encrypted tunnel like everything else.
On iPhone, where ExpressVPN’s app has no split tunnelling, the whole device uses the VPN.
ExpressVPN’s router app supports port forwarding, VPNAlert and Cloudwards note, though its device apps do not. A router running ExpressVPN also covers every device behind it, including those that could otherwise only use a proxy.
