PIA vs PrivateVPN is a rare match-up: both services hand torrent users port forwarding and a SOCKS5 proxy. What separates them is what sits behind those tools. Private Internet Access, a Kape brand based in the US, adds unlimited devices, memory-only servers and three Deloitte audits; PrivateVPN, a small Swedish provider, adds free dynamic dedicated IPs and a Stealth mode but has no audit and runs its servers from disk.
This guide compares the toolkits, the privacy evidence, devices, price, TV support and fit.
Torrent Toolkits Side by Side
Both include port forwarding, which lets peers reach your torrent client, and a SOCKS5 proxy you can set inside the client for speed without encryption. PrivateVPN includes a dedicated IP on one of its plans; PIA sells one that you activate with a token.
On tools alone, the two are close, which is unusual among VPNs. Our torrenting guide covers setup.

PIA vs PrivateVPN on Evidence
PIA’s no-logs policy has three Deloitte audits, and its servers run from memory, so data does not survive a reboot. PrivateVPN has published no audit in our table and uses disk-based servers, which leaves its claim resting on trust.
For torrenting, where privacy is often the point, that gap in evidence matters a great deal. Our VPN audit tracker compares records.
Jurisdiction and Devices
PIA is based in the US, a Five Eyes member, and relies on its audits for reassurance. PrivateVPN is in Sweden, part of the Fourteen Eyes, whose data retention law does not apply to VPNs in its current form, a 2026 review notes.
Our Five Eyes guide explains the alliances.
PIA sets no device limit; PrivateVPN allows 10. A seedbox, gaming PC, phones and a TV all fit on PIA without counting.
For most couples and small families, PrivateVPN’s limit is enough.
Price and Extras
PrivateVPN costs around $2 a month on its three-year plan with a 30-day refund, and its bundled dedicated IP avoids an add-on fee. PIA gives 30 days for a refund on first purchases; check its current price at checkout, since renewal figures vary.
If you want a fixed address, PrivateVPN’s bundle may be cheaper overall than PIA’s token add-on.

TVs, Consoles and Network
PIA has Android TV, Fire TV and Apple TV apps, plus Smart DNS for consoles, our tables record. Check PrivateVPN’s site for TV apps before buying for living-room use.
PIA covers more living-room devices directly, without a router.
One 2026 review put PIA at more than 35,000 servers in 91 countries; PrivateVPN runs about 200 servers in 63 countries.
PIA’s network offers far more cities and spare capacity at busy evening hours.
Ownership, and Trying Before Paying
Kape owns PIA along with ExpressVPN and CyberGhost, and review sites including vpnMentor and Wizcase. PrivateVPN sits outside the large VPN groups.
Our VPN ownership guide covers why that matters.

Proxy or Full Tunnel
Because both include SOCKS5, the question is when to use it. The proxy changes your address inside the torrent client only and adds no encryption, so your provider can still see the traffic type; the full VPN tunnel encrypts everything at some cost in speed.
Use the tunnel by default and the proxy only where raw speed matters more than privacy.
PIA offers a seven-day trial through mobile app stores, once per person, and 30 days for refunds on first website purchases. PrivateVPN gives 30 days for refunds.
Test port forwarding with your own torrent client during the window, since results depend on your setup.
Routers and Kill Switch
PIA supports DD-WRT, Asus and OpenWrt routers, Tom’s Guide lists, and its Android client has a kill switch and per-app split tunnelling, our tables record. Check PrivateVPN’s router guides and kill switch settings before relying on them.
A router covers a seedbox or NAS that cannot run a VPN app of its own.
Open Source, Support and Home Servers
PIA’s Android client is open source and published on F-Droid, so outside developers can check how it works, our tables record. PIA also runs round-the-clock support by chat and email, its trial page says.
Check PrivateVPN’s support hours and app transparency during its 30-day refund window.
If you run a NAS or seedbox alongside a laptop and phone, device limits start to matter. With PIA’s unlimited devices and router support, each can have its own connection; with PrivateVPN’s 10, a router running the VPN keeps the count down.
Either way, test port forwarding on the device that actually runs your torrent client.
Streaming
PIA’s apps for Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV make streaming on a television straightforward, and its large network gives more locations to try when a service blocks one. PrivateVPN’s 63 countries offer fewer alternatives.
Test your own services within each refund window before relying on either.
How We Research
This page draws on PIA’s trial and refund pages and our PIA, PrivateVPN, audit and price tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is PIA’s trial page. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
