Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections. Mullvad allows five. That is the widest gap on any single measure between two providers we have compared, and for a household it settles the question before anything else gets a hearing.
Then the direction reverses. Surfshark needs your email address and belongs to Nord Security, the company that also owns NordVPN. Mullvad issues a sixteen-digit number, accepts cash by post, and answers to nobody.
So this Mullvad vs Surfshark comparison is not a close-run thing on any category. It is two products built for different people, and the useful question is which of them you are.

Devices: The Number That Decides It
Surfshark writes no cap into its terms. Every plan, every tier, as many connections as you have devices.
Mullvad allows five, and sells no add-on. A phone, a laptop and a tablet is three. Add a partner with the same and you are over.
⚠️ Count honestly before reading further. If your answer is more than five, the rest of this comparison is interesting rather than decisive — Mullvad has no mechanism to accommodate you, and no plan to add one.
Winner: Surfshark, and it is not arguable.
Ownership: The Number That Should Also Decide It
Here the asymmetry runs the other way, and it is less visible.
Surfshark merged with NordVPN under Nord Security in 2022. The brands run separate infrastructure and commission separate audits, which matters. But two of the five providers we rank answer to one parent, so comparing them against each other compares siblings.
Mullvad has no parent company at all. It is owned by its Swedish operator, funded by subscriptions, with no outside capital seeking an exit.

Sign-Up and What Each Company Knows
Surfshark holds an email address, a payment record and a subscription history. Ordinary, legal, and a set of records that exists whether or not anyone asks for it.
Mullvad holds a number. No email, no username, no password, no recovery. Cryptocurrency works for payment, and so does an envelope of banknotes with the account number written on a slip.
⚠️ These answer different questions. A no-logs policy describes what a company chooses not to record about your activity; a no-account architecture describes what it cannot record about your identity. What a VPN actually hides sets out where each claim stops.
Lose the Mullvad number and the account is gone. Recovery would require the company to know something about you.
Winner: Mullvad.
Audits: Ten Published Against Two, Plus Everything Else
Counting is the wrong approach here, because the two audit different things.
Mullvad has more than ten, by Cure53 and Assured AB, every report published with findings intact. It also has something no audit provides: Swedish police searched its offices in April 2023 with a warrant and left having seized nothing.
Surfshark has two no-logs assurance reports by Deloitte, in 2023 and June 2025, under the ISAE 3000 standard.
But Surfshark audits more than logging. Cure53 examined its browser extensions in 2018, its infrastructure in 2021 and again in 2026, and its Dausos protocol in April 2026. SecuRing reviewed infrastructure security in 2025. All published on its trust page.
⚠️ A security audit asks whether the system can be broken into. A no-logs audit asks whether the company keeps what it says it doesn’t. Surfshark has more of the first kind; Mullvad has more of the second, plus the only real-world test between them.
Winner: Mullvad on no-logs verification, Surfshark on breadth.
Network, Streaming and Protocols
Surfshark runs 3,200-plus servers across 100 countries. Mullvad runs about 700 across 40-plus.
Mullvad’s position is that a physical server in the country listed beats a padded count of virtual locations, which is a fair argument — though it does not put a server where there isn’t one.
Streaming settles itself. Surfshark unblocks reliably. Mullvad maintains no streaming servers and makes no claim that it will work, which is honest rather than evasive. Our streaming guide covers why access shifts monthly for everyone.
On protocols, Surfshark is ahead. Its in-house Dausos protocol uses AEGIS-256X2 with hybrid post-quantum key exchange, audited by Cure53 in April 2026. Mullvad supports WireGuard exclusively, having retired OpenVPN in January 2026 — faster and simpler, but with no post-quantum equivalent shipping and no path for routers that only speak OpenVPN, as our router guide explains.

Price: Mullvad Is the Expensive One
This surprises people who assume the privacy option is also the frugal one.
Surfshark Starter runs about $2.49 a month on the two-year plan with three bonus months, then renews near $79 a year — about $6.58 monthly.
Mullvad charges €5, about $5.40, and has since 2009. No promotional rate, no annual discount, no increase.

⚠️ Per device the gap becomes absurd. If you connect eight devices, Surfshark works out at about $26 each across four years. Mullvad’s five come to about $52 each, and a sixth is not available at any price.
⚠️ What Mullvad buys with the difference is predictability. Its four-year cost was knowable on the day you signed up. Surfshark’s required you to notice the renewal figure.

When to Choose Mullvad Instead
No email is a requirement rather than a preference. Nothing on Surfshark’s side of the table addresses this.
You would rather not fund a two-brand group. Nord Security owns the first and third providers in our rankings; Mullvad is owned by nobody.
You are one person with a phone and a laptop. Five devices stops being a limitation, and the $55 buys a price that never moves.
Verification by warrant convinces you more than verification by appointment. April 2023 is the only such test between these two.
