Is Mysterium VPN safe? It encrypts your connection like any VPN, but its design adds a risk most VPNs do not have: the last hop runs through a volunteer’s home connection.
This guide weighs that design against its open-source app and residential IPs, and explains how to use it more safely. Our Mysterium VPN review covers prices and speed.
Is Mysterium VPN Safe? No Audit
No independent audit has checked Mysterium VPN, State of Surveillance’s Mysterium profile found. An audit of the company would not fix the main issue anyway, since the company does not carry your traffic at the exit hop.
That matters because Mysterium describes itself as no-logs by design. Without an outside check, readers cannot confirm how the company handles payment and account data, even if it never sees your browsing.

Companies in Switzerland and Lithuania
Blockdev AG in Zug, Switzerland, and UAB MN Intelligence in Lithuania run the project, MalwareTips reports. Both countries sit outside the Five Eyes, but Lithuania is an EU state with EU data rules.
The project also runs a crypto token, MYST, which pays node operators. Payments and node rules sit with the companies, while the traffic itself flows through thousands of independent operators.
Security Tools
Tech Insider reports a kill switch, DNS leak protection, WireGuard and OpenVPN. Its app code is also open source, so outside developers can inspect it.
Fahimai describes a Dark VPN option that routes traffic through several nodes. That adds a layer between you and any single exit, though it also costs speed.

Open code helps, but only if people actually review it. Check the project’s public repository for recent activity before relying on it.
Weak Points
An exit node can see anything you send without HTTPS, as Mysterium’s own FAQ admits, comparing it to Tor. User reports on Trustpilot also cite billing problems and a fair usage limit that cut off streaming.
MalwareTips also cites 2024 reports of police action against node operators over misuse of the network. That concerns node runners rather than VPN customers, but it shows how open the network is.
Settings Worth Turning On
Keep the kill switch on and use HTTPS-only mode in your browser, so exit nodes see only encrypted data. Avoid logging into sensitive accounts on sites without HTTPS.
If a site will not load over HTTPS, switch to a different exit node or a normal VPN for that task. Never run a node yourself without reading Mysterium’s terms on legal responsibility.

Is Mysterium VPN Safe for Torrenting?
Mysterium does not ban P2P, but MalwareTips cites reviewers urging caution, because your traffic exits through someone’s home IP. Our torrenting VPN guide lists safer choices.
On Public Wi-Fi
Yes, for everyday browsing. The encrypted tunnel protects you from others on the same Wi-Fi, and HTTPS covers the exit hop.
Refunds and Payment
Refund terms are disputed: sources describe either 7 days or up to 30 days. Read the terms at checkout and keep your receipt.
Compared With Rivals
For privacy proof, audited providers lead: NordVPN has 6 audits in our table and Proton VPN 5. Mysterium has none, which is why we rate it lower on privacy.
Is Mysterium VPN Safe Enough for You?
Is Mysterium VPN safe enough for you? For reaching sites that block VPNs, with HTTPS everywhere, it can be. For whistleblowing or sensitive work, choose an audited provider.
What Would Change the Answer
An independent audit of the app and company, clearer refund terms and safeguards on exit nodes would change our answer.
In Restrictive Countries
Residential IPs are harder for websites and some networks to flag as VPN traffic. That can help in places with VPN blocks, but check the local law first, as our guide to VPN legality in China explains.
Several Devices
Up to 15 devices can share one account, chrisg.com reports. Each device needs its own kill switch setting and HTTPS-only browser mode.
Streaming Safety
Residential IPs help with streaming, but Trustpilot users report fair usage cut-offs. Streaming itself carries little extra privacy risk.
Keeping It Updated
Keep the app updated, since open-source projects patch issues in public. Check the release notes for changes to node selection or the kill switch.
Getting Help
User reviews on Trustpilot describe slow replies on billing and refunds. Keep receipts and contact support in writing, so you have a record if a dispute arises.
Testing It Yourself
After connecting, run a leak test using our guide to checking if a VPN is working. Repeat it on a few different nodes.
Also compare the exit IP’s country with the node you chose. A mismatch means traffic is leaving somewhere you did not expect.

Is Mysterium VPN Safe? FAQ
Its encryption is sound, but volunteer exit nodes can see non-HTTPS traffic and no audit exists.
Only traffic not protected by HTTPS, according to Mysterium’s own FAQ.
No independent audit exists, State of Surveillance found.
It allows P2P, but your traffic exits through a home IP, so caution is wise.
The Verdict
Is Mysterium VPN safe? It is safe enough for everyday browsing if you use HTTPS everywhere. For anything sensitive, its exposed exit hop and missing audit make an audited provider the better choice.
