The reviews we trust most say Hotspot Shield port forwarding does not exist. BleepingComputer lists no port forwarding among its drawbacks, saying it makes the service less suitable for some torrent clients. Fahimai’s September 2026 comparison marks it as missing where TorGuard has it. TheBestVPN notes Hotspot Shield allows torrenting on all servers. One reseller listing claims port forwarding, but no review we read confirmed it.
This guide covers what that means for torrenting, who needs port forwarding and which providers offer it.
What the Sources Say
BleepingComputer: no port forwarding, a drawback for some torrent clients. Fahimai: port forwarding missing, against TorGuard’s. TheBestVPN: torrenting allowed across all server locations. A TechJockey reseller page lists port forwarding as a feature, which conflicts with the reviews, so treat it with caution.

Who Needs Port Forwarding
Port forwarding opens an incoming port through the VPN, so other peers can connect to you. It helps torrent seeding, hosting game servers and remote access to home devices. For downloading, browsing and streaming, it matters little. Our port forwarding guide explains how it works.

Torrenting on Hotspot Shield Without It
You can still download torrents, since TheBestVPN found P2P allowed on all servers. Expect fewer incoming connections and lower upload ratios. Keep the kill switch on, and remember PCWelt found it works only with the Hydra protocol, as our Hotspot Shield troubleshooting guide explains.
Hotspot Shield Port Forwarding Alternatives
PIA includes port forwarding, our tables record, along with unlimited devices. TorGuard offers it through its client area, and FastestVPN includes it, our reviews note. Proton VPN’s support pages say its WireGuard configs support port forwarding. Our PIA Windows guide covers one setup.

Hotspot Shield Port Forwarding Workarounds
Without Hotspot Shield port forwarding, some users forward ports on their home router instead. That does not pass through the VPN, so incoming peers reach your real address, which defeats the purpose. A provider with VPN-side port forwarding is the only clean fix.
Gaming and Remote Access
Hosting a game server or reaching a home device from outside both need incoming connections. Hotspot Shield cannot provide them through its tunnel. For those tasks, choose a provider that offers port forwarding or a dedicated IP, as our Hotspot Shield dedicated IP guide explains.
Seeding Ratios
Private trackers often require upload ratios. Without incoming connections, you upload only to peers that can reach you, which lowers ratios. Seed for longer, or use a provider with port forwarding for those trackers. Our torrenting VPN guide compares providers.
A Quick Rule
Downloading only? Hotspot Shield works. Seeding on private trackers? Choose PIA, TorGuard or Proton VPN. Hosting a server? Look for port forwarding or a dedicated IP.
Is Hotspot Shield Still Worth It for Torrents?
For casual downloads with Hydra’s speed, it can be. The missing Hotspot Shield port forwarding mainly hurts seeders and private-tracker users. Weigh that against Hotspot Shield’s 45-day refund window, which gives time to test on your own torrent client.
Testing Your Client
With the VPN on and the kill switch active, start a well-seeded public torrent and watch the peer count and speeds. Then compare with a provider that offers port forwarding during its refund window. The difference shows how much forwarding matters for your use.
Free Plan and Torrents
Security.org found the free plan offers one location and slow mobile speeds, so it suits testing rather than torrents. Our Hotspot Shield free guide covers the limits.
Why It Is Missing
Port forwarding opens a path through the VPN server for incoming traffic, which takes extra work for the provider to run safely. In the sources we read, Hotspot Shield does not explain publicly why it leaves the feature out, so we cannot say whether that will change.
Quick Check
If a torrent client shows that your listening port is closed while connected, that matches the missing Hotspot Shield port forwarding. Downloads still work; uploads to new peers will be limited.
Hotspot Shield Port Forwarding and Gaming
Some online games prefer an open NAT type, which port forwarding can help with. Without it, expect a moderate or strict NAT on some consoles and PCs. Test your games during the refund window.
Several Devices
Premium covers several devices; check the count for your plan at checkout before setting up torrent machines.
Refund Window
Hotspot Shield’s 45-day refund window, from our refund table, gives time to test torrent behaviour without port forwarding.
Hotspot Shield’s Network
BleepingComputer counts 1,800+ servers in 80+ countries, some of them virtual, and the app does not mark which. Our Hotspot Shield review covers the wider service.
Privacy Notes
Sources disagree on logging: Security.org says it logs originating IPs, while PCWorld says the IP is kept encrypted during a session and then deleted. Our audit table notes an audit of its protocol, not its no-logs policy.
How We Research
This page draws on BleepingComputer’s, TheBestVPN’s, Security.org’s and PCWorld’s Hotspot Shield reviews, Fahimai’s September 2026 comparison, a TechJockey listing, Proton’s support pages and our tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 7 October 2026. The main source we relied on is BleepingComputer’s Hotspot Shield review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
Hotspot Shield Port Forwarding FAQ
No, according to BleepingComputer and Fahimai.
Yes; TheBestVPN found torrenting allowed on all servers.
It lets peers connect to you, which helps seeding.
PIA, TorGuard and FastestVPN; Proton’s WireGuard configs support it.
PCWelt found it works only with Hydra.
The Verdict
Hotspot Shield port forwarding is not available, so heavy seeders should look elsewhere. For casual downloading, Hotspot Shield works, with Hydra keeping the kill switch active.
