TorGuard OpenVPN (2026): Apps, Config Generator and Stealth Modes

TorGuard OpenVPN support runs through its apps, its config generator and many manual guides. The Windows client defaults to WireGuard but offers OpenVPN and OpenConnect. TorGuard publishes OpenVPN bundles for Linux, guides for Ubuntu’s NetworkManager, Tomato routers and the Raspberry Pi, and an iPhone route through OpenVPN Connect. Its Stealth modes wrap OpenVPN in SSL to look like HTTPS on networks that block VPNs.

This guide covers when to use OpenVPN, the setups and the trade-offs.

When to Choose TorGuard OpenVPN

WireGuard is faster for most connections. OpenVPN earns its place on networks that block UDP, where its TCP mode gets through, and as the base for TorGuard’s Stealth modes on networks that inspect traffic. Our WireGuard vs OpenVPN guide explains the trade-off.

Where It Is Available

The Windows app offers it alongside WireGuard and OpenConnect. Linux users get TorGuard’s OpenVPN UDP and TCP bundles or NetworkManager. Tomato routers use their built-in client. iPhone users go through OpenVPN Connect with configs opened in Safari, as our TorGuard iPhone guide explains.

TorGuard OpenVPN With a Generated Config

Open TorGuard’s config generator, choose OpenVPN, a server and a port, and download the file. Import it into your client or router and enter your TorGuard VPN username and password. Our TorGuard Linux guide covers NetworkManager, and our TorGuard router guide covers Tomato.

Stealth Modes

TorGuard’s Stealth VPN wraps OpenVPN in Stunnel or SSL, and its Stealth Proxy disguises traffic as HTTPS, its support pages say, for networks in countries such as China, Iran, the UAE, Russia and Turkey. GreatFirewallGuide ranked TorGuard second for China in 2026. Our obfuscation guide explains how disguise works.

UDP or TCP

UDP is faster and suits most connections. TCP adds overhead but gets through networks that block UDP. Start with UDP, switch to TCP when a network blocks it, and move to Stealth when even TCP fails.

OpenConnect

The Windows client also offers OpenConnect, an SSL-based protocol compatible with Cisco AnyConnect. It can help on corporate networks where other protocols struggle. Our TorGuard Windows guide covers the client’s options.

Raspberry Pi and Servers

The provider’s Raspberry Pi guide uses OpenVPN bundles with a credentials file and auto-connect at boot. Our TorGuard Raspberry Pi guide covers the steps.

A Quick Rule

Fast network? WireGuard. UDP blocked? OpenVPN over TCP. Deep packet inspection? Stealth. Corporate network? Try OpenConnect.

Dedicated IPs

Pro and Premium plans include dedicated IPs, Fahimai notes, and the config generator can build configs that use them. A stable address helps banking and services that flag shared VPN IPs. Our dedicated IP guide explains when that helps.

Checking the Connection

After connecting, confirm the address with our VPN test page and run our DNS leak guide. TorGuard’s guides recommend its own DNS servers to avoid leaks.

Speed

Expect lower speeds than WireGuard, especially on long routes. Stealth adds more overhead on top. Test the modes on your network and keep the fastest one that connects reliably.

Routers

Tomato routers use the generated files in their built-in client, while OpenWrt users get a dedicated app with WireGuard instead, and a pre-flashed router is also on offer for people who would rather not configure firmware. Our page on TorGuard troubleshooting covers protocol, port and Stealth fixes in order.

Linux Desktops

The Ubuntu guide covers 20.04, 22.04 and 24.04 and derivatives such as Mint and Pop!_OS, using the NetworkManager plugin and a generated file. If the import fails, reinstall the plugin and restart NetworkManager.

Keeping Configs Current

If a connection that worked stops, generate a fresh file. Server addresses and certificates change over time.

Is OpenVPN Still Worth It Here?

For most users, WireGuard handles everyday use better. The older protocol stays valuable for TCP on port 443, for Stealth on filtered networks, and for routers or devices without WireGuard. Keep it as the fallback rather than the default.

Quick Check

After connecting, open our test page, then try TCP on port 443 if a network blocks the default. Note which mode worked on which network.

Several Devices

Standard allows up to eight devices, Fahimai notes. Each can use its own mode, so a router on OpenVPN and a laptop on WireGuard share one plan without conflict, as long as you stay within the limit.

Kill Switch With OpenVPN

The Windows client’s kill switch starts switched off, so turn it on after choosing OpenVPN. Manual setups on Linux or routers have no kill switch; add firewall rules. Our kill switch guide explains why.

Ports

TorGuard’s generator lets you choose the port. If one port is blocked on a work or hotel network, try another, or switch to TCP on a common port such as 443, which blends with web traffic.

TorGuard’s Record

Our audit table records no independent audit for TorGuard. Our TorGuard cost guide covers the plans.

How We Research

This page draws on TorGuard’s Windows, Linux, Ubuntu NetworkManager, Tomato, Raspberry Pi, iOS and Stealth guides, GreatFirewallGuide and our TorGuard tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 7 October 2026. The main source we relied on is TorGuard’s Ubuntu OpenVPN guide. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.

TorGuard OpenVPN FAQ

Does TorGuard support OpenVPN?

It does, in its apps and through generated configs.

Is OpenVPN the default in TorGuard’s app?

No; WireGuard is the Windows default.

What is TorGuard Stealth VPN?

OpenVPN wrapped in Stunnel or SSL to look like HTTPS.

Can I use TorGuard OpenVPN on iPhone?

Yes, through OpenVPN Connect with configs from TorGuard.
