Watching YouTube TV With ExpressVPN (2026): Home Area, Playback Area and Local Channels

ExpressVPN YouTube TV use runs into two settings that matter more than the VPN itself. Your home area, set by ZIP code, decides your local channels and recordings. Google lets you change it only twice in 12 months, and only from inside the new area. Your current playback area is checked with your device’s location, especially on phones and TVs. ExpressVPN gets you a US connection abroad. Gizmodo’s October 2026 test found it unlocked cable channels, and local stations once the browser reported a US location.

This guide covers both settings, what a VPN changes, the TV app’s phone check, travel rules and fixes.

Home Area and Current Playback Area

Google’s help page explains the split between the two settings. Your home area is the ZIP code of your actual residence and decides which local networks you can watch and record. Your current playback area is where you are now, and changes when you travel.

To keep the right local networks, Google asks you to use YouTube TV in your home area at least once every three months. Long trips abroad can break that rule. Our YouTube TV VPN guide compares providers.

What a VPN Changes

YouTube TV only works in the US, so from abroad a US VPN server is the first requirement, Gizmodo notes in its tests. ExpressVPN lists 63 US locations, so you can pick the city nearest your home area.

Gizmodo’s test unlocked cable channels with the US address alone; local stations such as ABC 7 played only once the browser also reported a New York location.

What a VPN Does Not Change

Security.org found that even with a VPN on the phone, it could not change YouTube TV’s current playback area to the server’s location. The check uses the device’s GPS. Changing the home area also requires being physically in the new area, Google says.

So a VPN cannot move your home area. On phones and TV apps, the location check may still see where you really are.

ExpressVPN YouTube TV for Travellers

Outside your home area inside the US, Google lets you watch networks local to where you are. You cannot record or watch your home area’s local networks there. Abroad, connect ExpressVPN to a US city first, then open tv.youtube.com in a browser and sign in.

Expect national cable channels to work well; local channels depend on the location checks above, so test both before a big game.

The TV App’s Phone Check

On a smart TV or streaming stick, updating the current playback area asks you to confirm location on your phone, Google’s guide and Security.org describe. That phone check uses the phone’s location, not the TV’s VPN connection.

ExpressVPN’s apps on Fire TV, Android TV and Apple TV give the TV a US connection. The phone check is a separate hurdle.

Fixing Location Errors, Sport and Blackouts

Google suggests clearing the browser’s cache and cookies and checking that YouTube TV has permission to use location. Updating the app also helps. Home internet services that move IP addresses around, such as some fixed wireless providers, can also confuse the check, a Google community guide notes.

If you have used both home area changes in 12 months, only YouTube TV support can help, and it may ask you to wait.

Recordings and Cloud DVR

What you can record also follows your home area, Google’s help page says, as does what you can watch, so recordings of your home area’s local networks stop while you are elsewhere. National channels record normally.

The limit applies to local networks; national cable channels keep recording wherever you watch.

Which ExpressVPN City to Pick

Choose the ExpressVPN location closest to your YouTube TV home area’s city. The IP address and your account’s ZIP code then point to the same region. With 63 US locations, there is usually one in your own state or a neighbouring one.

Stick to that city rather than switching often, which keeps location checks consistent from one session to the next.

Regional sports networks follow your home area too, and sports blackout rules may apply on top, Cybernews notes. A VPN does not override blackouts tied to your account’s home area, and trying to dodge them may conflict with YouTube TV’s terms.

Our ExpressVPN YouTube guide covers regular YouTube.

Terms, Price and Refund

YouTube TV needs a US payment card and home ZIP code, and its terms tie local content to where you live. ExpressVPN’s Basic plan renews at $99.95 a year for 10 devices, our tables record, with a 30-day refund for new users. Our IPVanish and YouTube TV page goes into mixed results and Google’s rules.

Test on YouTube TV’s free preview before paying for either, from the device you will actually use to watch.

How We Research

This page draws on Google’s YouTube TV help on home area and playback area, Security.org’s and Cybernews’ YouTube TV guides, Gizmodo’s October 2026 tests and our ExpressVPN tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Google’s YouTube TV location help. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
