Is UltraVPN Safe? (2026) Fast Hydra, a Shared Policy and a US Base

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

Is UltraVPN safe? It encrypts your traffic with the same Hydra protocol as Hotspot Shield, and independent tests found it fast. For everyday protection, it does the job.

The questions are about privacy rather than security: a US base, a policy shared across Point Wild brands and one reported leak. Our UltraVPN review covers prices and streaming.

Is UltraVPN Safe? No Audit of Its Own

We found no independent audit of UltraVPN itself. Its privacy therefore rests on the group’s policy and reputation, as our VPN audit tracker explains for other providers.

Comparitech describes the policy after Pango’s takeover as watertight. Comparitech belongs to the same group, Point Wild, so we weigh that view with care.

Is UltraVPN safe? The evidence for and against, compared

A US Base Inside Point Wild

Pango, then part of the US firm Aura, bought UltraVPN in 2020, and the group now operates as Point Wild. UltraVPN therefore operates under US law, ProPrivacy’s UltraVPN review notes, inside the Five Eyes alliance.

Point Wild also owns Hotspot Shield and Betternet. A shared group can mean shared infrastructure and policies, which is why ownership matters, as our VPN ownership guide explains.

Security Tools

Hydra is a proprietary protocol built for speed, and Comparitech measured an average of 211 Mbps across its tests. ProPrivacy also lists Tor over VPN on every server, which adds an extra layer for sensitive browsing.

Torrenting works on all servers, ecommerceparadise reports. The apps choose the protocol automatically, which keeps setup simple for beginners.

Is UltraVPN safe? Settings and steps that make it safer

Weak Points

vpnMentor’s 2026 testing found a confirmed IP leak on the Austria server, ecommerceparadise reports. Other reviewers call the shared Pango-era policy contradictory and vague.

Because Hydra is proprietary, outsiders cannot inspect its code the way they can with WireGuard or OpenVPN. That puts more weight on trust in the company.

Settings Worth Turning On

Keep automatic protocol selection on, and run a leak test whenever you change server country. If you see your real IP, switch servers and report the issue.

Use Tor over VPN only for browsing that needs it, since it slows the connection. For everyday tasks, the normal tunnel is enough.

Is UltraVPN safe? Our answer by type of use

Is UltraVPN Safe for Torrenting?

UltraVPN allows torrenting on all its servers. Check for leaks first, given the Austria report, and our torrenting VPN guide lists audited alternatives.

On Public Wi-Fi

Yes. The encrypted tunnel protects you from others on hotel, café or airport Wi-Fi. Turn the VPN on before you open any apps.

Refunds and Payment

The yearly plan costs $59.88, and the two-year plan later renews at $159.80 for each further two years, ProPrivacy notes. Check the refund terms at checkout before you pay.

Pay with a method that offers buyer protection, such as a credit card, if refunds matter to you. Keep the receipt and the date you subscribed.

Compared With Rivals

For privacy proof, audited providers lead: NordVPN has 6 audits in our table and Proton VPN 5. UltraVPN has none of its own, though it is faster than many budget rivals.

Within its own group, Hotspot Shield has a longer public record with the same Hydra technology. That makes it a useful comparison point.

Is UltraVPN Safe Enough for You?

Is UltraVPN safe enough for you? For streaming and public Wi-Fi, yes. For sensitive work, a non-US provider with an audit is the stronger choice.

What Would Change the Answer

A published audit of UltraVPN, a clearer brand-specific privacy policy and a fix for the reported leak would raise our privacy score.

In Restrictive Countries

Hydra is designed for speed rather than disguise. In places that block VPNs, an obfuscated protocol from another provider may work better, and our guide to VPN legality in China explains the legal side.

Several Devices

Install the app on each device you use, since protection applies per device. Check the device limit in your plan before adding more.

Use the same settings on each device, so protection stays consistent across the household.

Streaming Safety

ProPrivacy found BBC iPlayer working on all UK servers, and streaming adds no particular privacy risk. Test your own services in the first days.

Keeping It Updated

Keep the app updated, since Point Wild patches its shared technology across brands. Recheck for leaks after major updates.

Getting Help

Premium members get email support around the clock, according to the developer’s App Store replies. Describe your device and app version to speed up help.

Testing It Yourself

After connecting, run a leak test using our guide to checking if a VPN is working. Repeat it on two or three different countries.

Check the location the app reports against the leak test result. A mismatch suggests traffic is leaving through a different route.
