NordVPN vs NymVPN compares two audited services built for different goals. NordVPN aims at speed and streaming with 6 audits in our table; NymVPN aims at anonymity, with a mixnet and audited open-source apps.
Neither is a weak choice. The question is whether you need metadata privacy or everyday speed. This guide compares both. Our NymVPN review covers the second service in depth.
NordVPN vs NymVPN on Audits
Our audit table lists 6 NordVPN audits by PwC and Deloitte, so its no-logs claim has repeated outside checks.
NymVPN’s apps passed a Cure53 audit in July 2024, and JP Aumasson, Oak Security and Cryspen have reviewed parts of the system, according to Nym’s audit list. Both have outside audits, so this is a close contest on proof, though NymVPN’s code is also open source.
A Mixnet vs a Standard VPN
NymVPN’s Anonymous mode sends traffic through a five-hop mixnet with cover traffic, which hides metadata that standard VPNs leave exposed. Its Fast mode uses two hops with AmneziaWG.
NordVPN does not offer a mixnet. For most users that is fine, but for high-risk users NymVPN’s design adds real protection.
Speed
CNET measured a 2.9% speed loss on NordVPN, our speed table notes, a figure few rivals match.
NymVPN is slow by design: Tom’s Guide found Anonymous mode too slow for normal browsing, and PCWorld found Fast mode hit-or-miss for streaming. On speed, NordVPN wins clearly.
Two-Year Cost
On two years, NordVPN Basic costs $94.23 for 27 months, about $3.49 a month, then $139.08 a year, our tables show; monthly billing is $14.99.
NymVPN costs $12.99 a month, or $5.49 a month on two years, and Nym’s blog now quotes plans from $2.39 a month. After Nym’s price cut, the two cost about the same on long plans.
Free Use and Devices
There is no free NordVPN tier, but a 7-day trial with a card exists in 15 countries, our refund table records. Ten devices share one plan.
NymVPN offers a free trial rather than a free plan, and covers up to 10 devices, VPNCentral reports. Both cover 10 devices.
Jurisdiction and Ownership
Nord Security, the owner of NordVPN and Surfshark, runs NordVPN from Panama.
Nym Technologies is based in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Both sit outside the Fourteen Eyes.
Security Features
A kill switch comes built into NordVPN’s apps, along with Threat Protection for malicious sites; our NordVPN kill switch guide covers it.
NymVPN’s apps and network software are open source, and Anonymous mode adds cover traffic that hides timing patterns.
Platforms and Support
NordVPN covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and TVs. Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.
Live chat with NordVPN runs around the clock. Nym runs a support site and publishes technical notes openly.
Protocols and Streaming
NordLynx, NordVPN’s WireGuard-based protocol, is the default, with OpenVPN as a fallback. Our NordVPN Netflix guide covers streaming.
NymVPN uses AmneziaWG in Fast mode and Sphinx packets in its mixnet, and added a QUIC disguise in November 2025, Tom’s Guide reports. For streaming, NordVPN is the practical choice.
Which Is Better Value?
Value depends on your goal. For metadata privacy, NymVPN delivers something NordVPN cannot at a similar price; for speed and streaming, NordVPN gives more for the money.
Payment and Checkout
Compare final totals rather than headline prices, since VAT and currency conversion apply at checkout. Save the renewal terms for both.
Refunds
All NordVPN plans carry a 30-day refund window, our refund table notes.
NymVPN refunds the unused part of your plan within 30 days. NordVPN refunds in full; NymVPN pro-rates.
Who Each Is For
Choose NordVPN for proven privacy, speed and streaming. NymVPN suits journalists, activists and anyone who needs metadata privacy more than speed.
Many readers could use both: NymVPN for sensitive messaging and NordVPN for streaming and downloads.
What Else to Know About NymVPN
Nym does not run most of its network itself: independent operators run nodes and earn NYM tokens. In November 2025, Nym also added a QUIC disguise for networks that block VPNs, Tom’s Guide reports.
What Else to Know About NordVPN
Beyond Basic, NordVPN sells Complete and Prime plans with extra tools, renewing at $219.48 and $296.28 a year, our tables show. Most readers only need Basic.
Testing Both
The fairest test uses the same network, the same time of day and the same sites. Run a leak test on each, as our guide to checking if a VPN is working shows, then compare speed and streaming.
Switching Between Them
If you switch, overlap the two for a day so you never browse unprotected. Then uninstall the old app and cancel its renewal.
