This NymVPN review looks at one of the most unusual privacy tools on the market. NymVPN comes from Nym Technologies, a company founded in 2018 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Its headline feature is a mixnet, a network that shuffles and pads your traffic so that observers cannot link you to what you do online.
The app offers two modes. Fast mode works like a two-hop VPN. Anonymous mode sends your traffic through five hops of the mixnet, which protects metadata far better but runs very slowly. We set out what each mode is good for, what it costs and what reviewers found.
NymVPN Review: Is It Worth It in 2026?
It is worth it if your threat model goes beyond hiding your IP address. Journalists, activists and people in censored countries get protection here that ordinary VPNs do not offer. The apps are also open source and independently audited.
For streaming, gaming or fast downloads, look elsewhere. Reviewers found Anonymous mode too slow for normal browsing, and Fast mode only hit-or-miss for streaming. A conventional provider such as NordVPN suits those uses better.
What NymVPN Costs
Nym’s support page lists three plans. One month costs $12.99. The one-year plan works out at $6.99 a month, billed $83.88. The two-year plan costs $5.49 a month, billed $131.76.
Nym later cut prices, and its blog now says plans start from $2.39 a month. Paying in NYM tokens takes 50% off, according to the support page. Cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and several cryptocurrencies, including Monero and Bitcoin, are also accepted.
Refunds are pro-rated within 30 days, Tom’s Guide and VPNCentral report. In other words, if you cancel after 10 days, you get back the remaining 20 days rather than the full price. Our VPN refund guide explains how such policies compare.

The Mixnet: The Reason People Buy It
A normal VPN hides your IP address from websites, but the VPN itself sees where your traffic goes and when. A mixnet goes further. Anonymous mode splits your data into packets, mixes them with others and adds cover traffic, so that timing patterns reveal less.
Nym compares the approach to Tor, and the comparison is fair: both aim to stop any single node from seeing who you are and what you do. Our Tor vs VPN guide explains the difference between hiding your IP and hiding your metadata.
Fast mode is the everyday option. It routes traffic through two hops using AmneziaWG, an open-source fork of WireGuard built to resist censorship, according to Nym’s own notes on Privacy Guides. In November 2025, Nym added an enhanced setting that disguises Fast mode traffic as QUIC, which helps on networks that block VPNs, Tom’s Guide reports.
What Reviewers Disagree On
Speed is the main point of debate in any NymVPN review. Kripesh Adwani found Fast mode gave decent download speeds. PCWorld, testing earlier, found even Fast mode hit-or-miss for streaming because it always uses two hops.
Anonymous mode is where opinions converge. Tom’s Guide calls it too slow even for standard browsing, and suggests Tor may work better. PCWorld found Anonymous connections had trouble loading web pages at all. Nym itself recommends it for messaging, email and crypto transactions rather than video.
Network size is less clear. Kripesh Adwani counts more than 600 servers in 70 countries. Nym says it does not operate servers itself, apart from a few labelled test gateways. Instead, independent operators run the nodes and earn NYM tokens.

Privacy and Audits
NymVPN’s apps and the Nym network software are open source, Nym says. More importantly, outside experts have checked them. Cure53, the Berlin security firm, audited the apps in July 2024. Cryptographer JP Aumasson, Oak Security and Cryspen have also reviewed parts of the system, according to Nym’s audit list.
That puts NymVPN ahead of many young services, which often launch without any outside review. Our VPN audit tracker shows how other providers compare.
Sign-up can be anonymous. You can create an account without a name or email address and receive an access code instead, VPNCentral notes. Version 2026.3 added an optional social login for people who prefer convenience, Nym’s blog says.
⚠️ Mixnets are still young. Wikipedia notes that this kind of technology has had less time and less scale of real-world testing than established VPN protocols. Swiss jurisdiction helps, as our Five Eyes guide explains, but newness is a real risk.
Speed and Streaming
Expect slower speeds than mainstream VPNs in both modes. Fast mode is usable for browsing and most video. Anonymous mode is not built for it.
Streaming results were inconsistent in PCWorld’s tests. If streaming matters most, our streaming VPN guide lists more reliable choices.
Features Worth Knowing
Every plan includes both modes, all locations and anonymous payment, with up to 10 devices, VPNCentral reports. You can choose separate entry and exit countries. Nym also offers a dApp mode that protects the link between a crypto wallet and the Ethereum network, its blog says.
Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Encryption in Anonymous mode uses AES-GCM-SIV and ChaCha20, with forward secrecy between nodes, according to Nym.

Who Should Look Elsewhere
If you want speed and easy streaming, a conventional audited VPN is the better fit. Our Proton VPN review covers a Swiss option with a free plan.
If price is the main factor, compare NymVPN with the options in our cheap VPN guide. The newer low prices make it competitive, but not the cheapest.

How We Research
For this NymVPN review, we took prices and payment options from Nym’s support page and blog, and the audit list and technical details from Nym’s own notes on Privacy Guides, read on 21 October 2026. Speed and streaming findings come from Tom’s Guide, PCWorld and Kripesh Adwani, and device and refund terms from VPNCentral. Our scores weigh speed, security and privacy, streaming, price and ease of use equally. We do not run our own tests. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.

NymVPN
Exceptional privacy, slow by design
NymVPN’s mixnet offers metadata protection that ordinary VPNs cannot match, backed by open-source code and outside audits. The cost is speed: Anonymous mode is too slow for normal browsing, and streaming is inconsistent.
The Verdict
Our NymVPN review comes down to one question: how much do you value metadata privacy? If it matters a great deal, NymVPN offers protection few rivals can match, from an audited Swiss company.
If you mostly stream and browse, its speed costs too much. In that case, a conventional VPN serves you better.
