NymVPN alternatives make sense when speed matters more than metadata protection. NymVPN is one of the most private services available, but reviewers found its Anonymous mode too slow for normal browsing.
The services below trade the mixnet for speed while keeping outside audits. Our NymVPN review explains what makes Nym special and when to keep it.
NymVPN Alternatives for Streaming: NordVPN or Surfshark
NymVPN’s Fast mode is hit-or-miss for streaming, PCWorld found. Both come from Nord Security: NordVPN brings 6 audits and 10 devices, and Surfshark brings unlimited devices and 2 Deloitte audits.

For Audited Privacy and a Free Plan: Proton VPN
NymVPN is audited too, so this switch is about speed rather than trust. Proton VPN pairs 5 audits in our table with a free plan that has no data cap. Paid plans cost about $2.99 a month on a two-year term.
For Torrenting: PIA
NymVPN is too slow for practical torrenting in either mode. Private Internet Access adds port forwarding for faster seeding, unlimited devices and 3 Deloitte audits in our table.
For Strict Privacy: Mullvad
If Nym’s anonymous sign-up appealed to you, Mullvad offers a similar no-email approach with fast single-hop servers. Mullvad leads our table with 10+ audits and needs no email to sign up. It charges about $5.40 a month, with no discounts for long plans.
Mullvad does not hide metadata the way a mixnet does, but it collects very little to begin with. For many readers, that balance is enough.
For Lower Prices: PureVPN or CyberGhost
NymVPN now starts from $2.39 a month, so it is already cheap; budget picks matter mainly for streaming. On a budget, PureVPN costs about $2.15 a month with 4 KPMG audits, and CyberGhost about $2.19 with a 45-day refund window on longer plans.

For TVs and Routers
NymVPN focuses on computers and phones rather than TVs. For TVs, NordVPN and Surfshark have native apps, while a router such as ExpressVPN’s Aircove covers every device at once, as our guide to a VPN for smart TV explains.
Price Comparison
NymVPN costs $12.99 for one month, or $5.49 a month on two years, and its blog now quotes plans from $2.39. The alternatives above run from about $2.03 to $5.40 a month in our price table.
Free or Paid
NymVPN offers a free trial rather than a free plan, so a permanent free tier is a genuine extra. Among free plans, Proton VPN sets no data cap and Windscribe allows up to 15 GB, our refund table records. Each has outside audits behind it.
A Quick Rule
Need metadata privacy? Keep NymVPN. Streaming on a TV? NordVPN or Surfshark. Free and audited? Proton VPN. Torrents? PIA. Fast and anonymous? Mullvad.
Switching Without a Gap
Many people keep NymVPN for sensitive messaging and add a faster VPN for streaming. If you replace it fully, test the new service before cancelling; Nym refunds pro-rata within 30 days.
Several Devices
NymVPN covers up to 10 devices, VPNCentral reports. NordVPN also allows 10, Surfshark and PIA set no limit, and Mullvad allows 5.
Families
Families rarely need a mixnet, and its speed can frustrate children’s streaming. A faster audited VPN usually suits a household better.
Keeping Protection Running
If you keep NymVPN for sensitive tasks, switch between the two apps rather than running both. Run both VPNs side by side only briefly; two active VPN apps can block each other. Remove the old one once the new one runs everywhere.
Testing an Alternative
Compare speed on your own line first, since that is NymVPN’s weak point. Then check streaming and run a leak test using our guide to checking if a VPN is working.
Time a few page loads with each service on the same network. The difference from Nym’s Anonymous mode will be obvious within minutes.
Ownership
Nord Security owns NordVPN and Surfshark, and Kape owns PIA, CyberGhost and ExpressVPN. Proton VPN and Mullvad are independent companies. Nym Technologies is an independent Swiss company.
Ownership matters less for Nym users than for most, since Nym’s own model avoids trusting a single company. Weigh that when moving to a conventional provider.
What You Give Up
You give up the mixnet, which hides metadata that ordinary VPNs leave exposed. For journalists and activists, that is a real loss.

Leaving NymVPN
Cancel through your Nym account. Its refunds are pro-rated within 30 days, so you get back the unused part of your subscription.
Are NymVPN Alternatives Worth the Switch?
For everyday streaming and downloads, the switch is worth it. For high-risk privacy needs, keep NymVPN, perhaps alongside a faster VPN.
