Looking for a Windscribe alternative usually comes down to a handful of reasons. Its refund window is only seven days, streaming results are mixed, Security.org found no audit of its no-logs policy, or the free plan’s 10 GB runs out. Windscribe also does a lot well, from a court-tested no-logs claim to no device limit. This guide matches alternatives to the reason you are leaving.
Each pick below draws on our audit, device, refund and renewal tables.
Why People Leave Windscribe
A short refund window is a common practical complaint: seven days and under 10 GB, per its help article, against 30 or more at the rivals below. Security.org reported Netflix problems. Windscribe cites a 2024 PacketLabs infrastructure audit, but Security.org found no audit of the no-logs policy itself.
In May 2026, a Canadian metadata-retention proposal led Windscribe to say it would leave Canada rather than log, our tables record. Our Windscribe safety guide covers its record in full.

For an Uncapped Free Plan: Proton VPN
Proton VPN Free has no data cap, against Windscribe’s 10 GB, and Proton has five Securitum audits in our table. The free plan allows one device and assigns a server automatically, which suits light use rather than choosing countries.
Paid Proton Plus covers 10 devices and adds port forwarding and Secure Core. It renews at about $83.88 a year and carries a 30-day refund. Our Proton VPN vs Windscribe page compares them directly.
For the Strongest Privacy Record: Mullvad
Mullvad has more than 10 audits in our table, issues account numbers instead of emails and accepts cash, like Windscribe’s anonymous sign-up but with more audit evidence. It costs a flat €5 a month for five devices.
It has no free plan and a 14-day refund on card payments. Mullvad dropped OpenVPN in January 2026, so older routers need WireGuard, and it does not market streaming support. Our Mullvad review covers the record.
For Streaming and Unlimited Devices: Surfshark
Surfshark keeps Windscribe’s no-device-limit approach and adds two Deloitte audits, a 30-day refund and a renewal of about $79 a year, our tables record. Its apps include split tunnelling and Smart DNS was retired in 2026, our tables note. Surfshark and NordVPN share an owner, Nord Security.
Our Surfshark vs Windscribe page compares them on speed and free use.

For Torrenting Tools: Private Internet Access
PIA offers unlimited devices, port forwarding and a SOCKS5 proxy. Its no-logs claim has three Deloitte audits and court records behind it, our tables record. It is owned by Kape and based in the US, a Five Eyes member, so its court record carries extra weight.
Our PIA vs Windscribe page compares their torrent tools and free options.
For a Longer Refund and Low Renewal: CyberGhost
CyberGhost gives 45 days for a refund on longer plans, against Windscribe’s three, and renews at $56.94 a year, our tables record. It has three Deloitte audits and allows seven devices, and groups servers by streaming service in its apps. Kape also owns ExpressVPN and PIA.
Our CyberGhost review covers its streaming servers.
Free Plans Compared
If the free plan is why you used Windscribe, compare the alternatives’ free tiers: Proton VPN has no data cap but one device, Windscribe gives 10 GB with no device limit, PrivadoVPN 10 GB on one device and TunnelBear 2 GB, our tables and Toolradar’s 2026 comparison record.
Mullvad, Surfshark, PIA and CyberGhost have no free plans, though each gives a refund window instead. Our free VPN data limits guide compares every free tier.
Price Over Time
Windscribe’s yearly Pro, $69, does not rise at renewal. Among the picks, CyberGhost renews lower at $56.94, while Surfshark at about $79 and Proton Plus at about $83.88 renew higher, our tables record. Mullvad’s flat €5 a month comes to about $65 a year.
So leaving Windscribe rarely saves money; it buys longer refunds, more audits or better streaming instead. Our renewal price guide compares the market.
Refund Windows Compared
Refunds differ more than prices: Windscribe seven days under 10 GB of use, Mullvad 14 days on card payments, Proton, Surfshark and PIA 30 days, and CyberGhost 45 days on longer plans, our tables and the providers’ terms record.
Use the window to test the services and devices you actually use, then cancel Windscribe’s renewal. If you are still deciding whether to leave, test the alternative first and cancel Windscribe afterwards.
Switching to a Windscribe Alternative Without a Gap
Cancel Windscribe’s renewal, but keep using it until the new VPN works on all your devices. Windscribe’s free plan stays available, so you can keep it as a backup on restrictive networks thanks to Stealth and WStunnel, which work on the free plan too.
Test the new provider within its refund window, on every device you use. Our VPN refund guide explains how to claim one.

How We Research
This page draws on Security.org’s Windscribe review, Windscribe’s no-logs page and our audit, device, refund, renewal and ownership tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Security.org’s Windscribe review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
