Windscribe IKEv2 (2026): In the Apps and as Manual Profiles

Windscribe IKEv2 support is broader than most. IKEv2 is one of its six app protocols alongside WireGuard, OpenVPN over UDP and TCP, Stealth and WStunnel, Windscribe’s information page lists. Its configuration generator also produces IKEv2 profiles for manual setups. That makes Windscribe a rare choice for devices whose built-in VPN client speaks only IKEv2, such as some routers.

This guide covers where IKEv2 fits, switching in the apps, manual profiles, its limits and when WireGuard or Stealth is better.

Windscribe IKEv2 Among Six Protocols, and Switching to It

Windscribe’s apps offer WireGuard, OpenVPN over UDP and TCP, and IKEv2. Stealth wraps OpenVPN in TLS, and WStunnel wraps it in WebSocket. Its Apple TV app adds AmneziaWG, an obfuscated WireGuard variant, its help centre lists.

WireGuard is the usual default in automatic mode on most networks. Our Windscribe WireGuard guide covers it.

Windscribe IKEv2 compared with its other protocols

Open the Windscribe app’s connection settings, change the connection mode from automatic to manual, and choose IKEv2 from the list. Reconnect to a nearby location.

Automatic mode picks a protocol for you and falls back when one is blocked. Switch back to it when you no longer need IKEv2.

Manual IKEv2 Profiles

Windscribe’s configuration generator creates IKEv2 profiles as well as WireGuard and OpenVPN files, its information page says. That lets you use the built-in VPN client on Windows, macOS or iOS, or a router that supports IKEv2, without an app.

Generated profiles need a Pro or Build-a-Plan account, and each covers one location. Our Windscribe router guide covers router setups.

When IKEv2 Is the Right Pick, and WireGuard

IKEv2 keeps connections steady when a phone moves between networks and is built into Apple’s systems and Windows. It is the protocol to reach for when a device has no Windscribe app but a native IKEv2 client, such as some work laptops.

On networks that block VPNs, Stealth and WStunnel do better, since IKEv2 uses UDP port 500 and is easy to spot.

Windscribe IKEv2 compared with WireGuard

WireGuard is usually faster and lighter on battery and processor. RTINGS notes Windscribe limits WireGuard to five devices at the same time, while its plans otherwise allow unlimited connections. IKEv2 or OpenVPN can cover any extra devices.

Our IKEv2 vs WireGuard guide compares the two in general.

Troubleshooting, Routers and Firewalls

If IKEv2 will not connect at all, the network may block UDP port 500; switch to Stealth or WStunnel, or let automatic mode choose. For a manual profile, regenerate it in your account, since server details change from time to time.

Our Windscribe troubleshooting guide lists more fixes.

Some business firewalls and routers have IKEv2 clients but no WireGuard. A generated Windscribe IKEv2 profile lets them connect, which Mullvad, for example, cannot offer at all.

Check your device’s IKEv2 settings carefully for the server address, remote ID and credentials the profile provides, and enter them exactly.

The Free Plan and Privacy

IKEv2 works in the apps on the free plan, with 10 GB a month and servers in 10 countries; manual profiles need a paid plan.

The free plan gives 10 GB a month after confirming an email. Pro costs $9 a month or $69 a year with no renewal jump, or Build-a-Plan from $3. Windscribe’s terms allow a refund of the first payment within seven business days if you have used less than 10 GB.

Windscribe’s no-logs claim held when an Athens court dismissed charges against its CEO in April 2025, because no user data existed. Its apps are open source, its information page notes.

Our Windscribe safety guide covers its record.

On Phones

On iPhone and Android, IKEv2 copes well with switching between home Wi-Fi and mobile data on the move. If the Windscribe app drops the connection when you leave home, switch to IKEv2 for that phone.

The free plan’s 10 GB allowance and servers apply the same whichever protocol you choose.

Encryption, Security and Native Clients

Windscribe uses modern ciphers such as AES-256-GCM and ChaCha20, depending on the protocol, with perfect forward secrecy, its information page states. IKEv2 itself is a mature standard handled natively by major operating systems.

Protocol choice affects speed and reach more than security; all six options use strong, current encryption.

On Windows, add a VPN connection in Settings, Network and Internet, VPN, using the server address and credentials from a generated profile. On iPhone and Mac, a downloaded profile installs through Settings.

These native connections lack Windscribe’s app firewall, so check for leaks after setting one up.

Choosing the Right Protocol

Use automatic mode on a normal home network and WireGuard when you want speed. Choose IKEv2 for native clients and phones that drop connections, and Stealth or WStunnel on networks that block VPNs.

Our Windscribe OpenVPN guide covers the OpenVPN-based modes.

How We Research

This page draws on Windscribe’s information page and Apple TV help article, RTINGS’ Windscribe review, a router maker’s VPN compatibility table and our Windscribe tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Windscribe’s information page. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.

Windscribe IKEv2 FAQ

Does Windscribe support IKEv2?

Yes, in its apps and through generated profiles.

Can I set up Windscribe IKEv2 manually?

Yes, with a profile from the generator on a paid plan.

Does IKEv2 work on the free plan?

In the apps, yes; manual profiles need a paid plan.

Is IKEv2 faster than WireGuard on Windscribe?

Usually not; WireGuard is faster.

What if IKEv2 is blocked?

Switch to Stealth or WStunnel.

The Verdict

Windscribe IKEv2 support covers apps and manual profiles, which few providers still offer. Use it for native clients and network switching, and Stealth on blocked networks.
