Windscribe WireGuard support is complete: every Windscribe app offers WireGuard, and its App Store listing says post-quantum encryption is built into it. Windscribe’s iOS feature page lists six WireGuard ports to choose from. Pro subscribers can also generate WireGuard configuration files for routers and other devices, and Build-a-Plan users can do the same for their chosen locations.
This guide covers WireGuard in the apps, when to switch to another protocol, configuration files, Linux, routers and free use.
Windscribe WireGuard in the Apps
WireGuard sits in each app’s protocol list alongside OpenVPN, IKEv2, Stealth and WStunnel, Windscribe’s pages show. On iPhone, Windscribe’s feature page lists six WireGuard ports, so you can change port if a network blocks the default. Our guide to Windscribe IKEv2 covers where IKEv2 runs in the apps, and manual profiles.
WireGuard is the fast, light option for everyday use, at home and on open networks. Switching protocol takes a few taps in the app’s settings. Free users get it too, since Windscribe does not lock protocols behind the paid plan.

Post-Quantum Protection
Windscribe’s App Store listing says post-quantum encryption is built into WireGuard, protecting connections against attackers who record traffic today and try to decrypt it with future quantum computers. You do not need to switch it on separately, and it adds little noticeable overhead.
Most major providers now add a post-quantum layer to their modern protocol, including ExpressVPN and Mullvad. Our post-quantum VPN guide explains what it protects against and what it does not.
When to Switch Away From WireGuard
WireGuard uses UDP and has a recognisable pattern, so some hotel, office and national firewalls block it. If WireGuard will not connect, try another of its ports first, then OpenVPN over TCP on port 443, then Stealth or WStunnel. Each step trades a little speed for reach.
Stealth wraps OpenVPN in SSL, and WStunnel carries it over WebSocket, Tom’s Guide explains. Our Windscribe OpenVPN guide covers those options in detail.

Speed, Battery and Leak Protection
WireGuard is light on battery: TheBestVPN’s 2026 test found it used about 2% over two hours of streaming, against about 7% for OpenVPN over TCP. That makes it the sensible default on phones and laptops.
Windscribe’s firewall, its kill switch, blocks IP, DNS and WebRTC leaks whichever protocol you use, and its desktop modes run from Automatic to Always On+. Our VPN battery guide covers the figures.
WireGuard Configuration Files
Windscribe Pro includes a configuration generator for WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2, its plans page lists. Build-a-Plan users can generate configurations only for the locations in their plan, Windscribe’s help article notes.
Free accounts cannot use the generator, so router and third-party setups need a paid plan, even a small Build-a-Plan. Each file covers one location, so download a few if you switch countries often. Regenerate files if a location changes or stops connecting. Our guide to Windscribe on a Router covers config files on paid plans, built-in on GL.iNet.
Setting Up a Config File
Sign in at windscribe.com, open the configuration generator, choose WireGuard and a location, then download the file. Import it into the official WireGuard app or your router’s WireGuard client and connect.
Check your address afterwards to confirm the location shown matches the file you chose. Our DNS leak guide covers testing, which matters more with a third-party client than with Windscribe’s own app.

Free Use
Free accounts get WireGuard and every other protocol in the apps, with 10 GB a month after confirming an email and servers in 10 countries. They do not get the configuration generator, and Windscribe has switched P2P off on free servers.
Our Windscribe Free guide covers the free plan’s limits in full, including the data cap.
WireGuard on Linux
Windscribe’s Linux command-line app connects over WireGuard with windscribe-cli connect best wireguard, its July 2026 guide shows, and lists the available ports with windscribe-cli ports wireguard. Both commands run without a desktop, which suits servers. The graphical Linux app offers the same protocol, with the firewall and protocol menu of the other desktops.
Our Windscribe for Linux guide covers both apps and their supported distributions.
WireGuard on Routers
Windscribe has no router firmware of its own; routers use generated WireGuard or OpenVPN files, a 2026 review notes. WireGuard is faster than OpenVPN on most modern router hardware, since it needs less processing per packet.
A router covers every device behind it, and Windscribe sets no device limit anyway, so the router is a convenience rather than a way round a cap. Our router setup guide compares firmware options.
WireGuard Across Providers
WireGuard is now the common default: Mullvad runs nothing else since January 2026, and ExpressVPN, the longest holdout, added it in August 2025 alongside its own Lightway, our tables record. Windscribe adds Stealth and WStunnel on top, and keeps all of them available on its free plan.
Our WireGuard vs OpenVPN guide explains why providers moved to it.
How We Research
This page draws on Windscribe’s iOS feature page, App Store listing, plans page, Build-a-Plan article and Linux CLI guide, Tom’s Guide’s Windscribe review and our Windscribe tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Windscribe’s plans page. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.

The Verdict
Windscribe WireGuard is the right everyday choice, post-quantum and available to free users in the apps. Keep Stealth and WStunnel for networks that block it.
