Is NymVPN safe? On the evidence, yes: it is one of the most privacy-focused VPNs available, with audited open-source apps and a Swiss base.

Is NymVPN Safe? Audited and Open Source
Cure53 audited the NymVPN apps in July 2024, and JP Aumasson, Oak Security and Cryspen have reviewed parts of the system, according to Nym’s audit list. The apps and network software are open source.
Multiple reviewers looking at the same code from different angles is a strong sign. It is more outside scrutiny than many established VPNs publish.
Swiss Jurisdiction
Nym Technologies has its base in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, which sits outside the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes and Fourteen Eyes alliances. Swiss law also offers strong privacy protection.
Nym also does not run most of the network itself; independent operators run the nodes and earn NYM tokens. No single company holds all the pieces needed to link you to your activity.
Security Tools
Fast mode uses AmneziaWG, a censorship-resistant WireGuard fork, over two hops. Anonymous mode adds a five-hop mixnet with cover traffic, which hides timing patterns that ordinary VPNs leave exposed.
In November 2025, Nym added an enhanced setting that disguises Fast mode traffic as QUIC, Tom’s Guide reports. That helps on networks using deep packet inspection to spot VPNs.
Weak Points
Anonymous mode is very slow; Tom’s Guide’s NymVPN review found it too slow for normal browsing. Mixnets also have a shorter real-world track record than standard VPN protocols, Wikipedia notes.
Fast mode still routes through two hops, so even everyday browsing is slower than with single-hop VPNs. Streaming is inconsistent as a result.
Speed matters for safety too, because people switch off a VPN that feels too slow. Pick the mode that you will actually keep on.
Settings Worth Turning On
Use Anonymous mode for messaging, email and crypto, and Fast mode for everything else. Pay with cryptocurrency and skip the optional social login if you want maximum anonymity.
Choose separate entry and exit countries when you want extra separation. For crypto wallets, the dApp mode protects the link between your wallet and the Ethereum network, Nym says.

Is NymVPN Safe for Torrenting?

On Public Wi-Fi
Yes. Fast mode encrypts your traffic and suits public Wi-Fi, while Anonymous mode adds metadata protection when you need it.
Set the app to connect automatically on untrusted networks, if your platform supports it, so you never browse unprotected by mistake.

Is NymVPN safe enough for you? Journalists, activists and anyone who needs metadata privacy will find few stronger options. Streamers should choose a faster VPN.
What Would Change the Answer
Longer real-world testing of the mixnet at scale and faster Anonymous mode speeds would strengthen the case further.

Every plan covers up to 10 devices, VPNCentral reports. Apps exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.
Install the same mode on each device you use for sensitive work, so habits stay consistent.
Streaming Safety
PCWorld found streaming hit-or-miss in Fast mode. It carries no extra privacy risk, but expect inconsistent results.
Keeping It Updated
Nym releases versioned updates, such as v2026.3, which added optional social login. Keep the app current, since mixnet software is still evolving fast.
Getting Help
Nym runs a support site and publishes technical notes openly, including on Privacy Guides. That openness makes it easier to check claims than with most VPNs.
Testing It Yourself
After connecting, run a leak test using our guide to checking if a VPN is working. Test both modes.
In Anonymous mode, allow a little longer for pages to load before testing. Slow responses are normal there and do not mean a leak.
