Netflix checks your address. Prime Video checks your account. HBO Max checks your card.
Peacock checks two of the three, and enforces both harder than anyone. There is a specific reason for that, and it has a number attached.
Why the Blocking Is This Aggressive
Most platforms geo-restrict because licensing requires it. Peacock’s version is unusually expensive.
NBCUniversal paid $2.7 billion for six years of Premier League rights, valid in the United States only. It holds Olympic coverage, Sunday Night Football, WWE and NBA rights on similar terms — and sport restricts differently from everything else it carries.
International streaming would breach those contracts. Sky in Britain, and dozens of regional broadcasters elsewhere, bought the rights Peacock would be giving away.

The Two Gates
Both apply, and they fail in different ways.
The address gate reads your connection, which is the only thing a VPN moves. Peacock uses a commercial geolocation database that classifies addresses by type as well as location — residential, datacentre, hosting or proxy. Datacentre addresses are refused before the player loads.
The payment gate reads your card. Reporting describes Peacock requiring a US-issued card or a PayPal account with a US billing address at signup.

Several describe non-US cards being declined outright; one describes signing up successfully with a European card while holding a US address. We could not reconcile that, so treat the checkout as the uncertain step rather than assuming either way.
The error text tells you which gate you hit. A message about not meeting US roaming rules is the address check. A declined card at signup is the other one.

Worth stating, because the free option people remember is gone.
The free ad-supported tier was discontinued in 2023. Existing accounts were carried for a while and then phased out. Bundles through some retail memberships remain the only no-cost route.

A US address remains the only route to the full library, which is why the partner deals do not solve the problem for a subscriber who wants everything.
If You Subscribe and It Stops Working
The case with a clean answer, and the one most readers have.
Switch to another US server first. Detection blocks individual addresses, not whole providers, and a second server often clears it.
Clear cookies and cache. Stored location data survives a change of address, particularly on televisions.
Check for leaks. DNS and WebRTC leaks expose your real location while the app still reports a connection, which is the failure people mistake for detection.
Try a different protocol. Reports describe WireGuard and OpenVPN being flagged at different times on the same network.
⚠️ Live sport is the demanding case. Peacock’s most-searched content is live, so a nearby US server on a wired connection matters more here than raw throughput.

Several guides recommend buying a virtual US payment card to get past the checkout, and at least one such guide is published by a company selling exactly that card.
