Do you need a VPN for Fortnite? Not for servers: Fortnite lets you choose your matchmaking region in its own settings, under Game, Language and Region, so there’s no need to route through a VPN to play on another region’s servers. Where a VPN does matter is your Epic account country, which Epic lets you change only once every six months and only with VPNs switched off, alviran.net notes after checking Epic’s support pages. Competitive play has its own region locks.

Region choice in competitive play is a rules matter. Epic’s Competitive Master Rules, dated June 2026, set out who can enter and win prizes; a VPN doesn’t change where you reside. NA-East returns as a competitive region in December 2026, Epic announced in September.
