NordVPN for India changed twice. NordVPN shut its Indian servers on 26 June 2022, after India’s CERT-In rules required VPN providers with local servers to keep user logs. Then, on 2 January 2024, it added one virtual location with an Indian IP address, according to its own support page.
Several guides still repeat older claims, so this page sets out the timeline and what it means for users.
Why NordVPN Left India
CERT-In issued its directions on 28 April 2022. They required VPN providers to store data such as names, IP addresses and usage patterns for up to five years, TechRadar and Sysadmin Journal report. NordVPN said it does not collect such data and therefore could no longer keep servers in India, as Moneylife reported.
ExpressVPN and Surfshark left too. CERT-In later clarified that the logging rules do not apply to enterprise VPNs. Our guide to VPN legality in India covers the legal side.
The Virtual India Location
NordVPN’s support says it made an exception due to demand and released one virtual location with an Indian IP on 2 January 2024. A virtual location gives you an Indian address while the server sits elsewhere, outside the CERT-In logging rules.
Expect one location, not a network. ProPrivacy’s 2026 page still claims more than 30 servers in India, which conflicts with NordVPN’s own statement; we follow NordVPN. Our UAE VPN guide covers another country with strict VPN rules.
NordVPN for India Users Inside the Country
Inside India, NordVPN still works; only the physical servers left. What a Virtual Location Means in Practice
NordVPN’s virtual Indian location gives you an Indian IP address while the server sits outside India. Websites see an Indian address. The physical hardware stays outside the reach of CERT-In’s logging rules.
The trade-off is distance. Traffic travels to a server abroad and appears Indian from there, which adds delay. Expect slower speeds than from a physical server inside the country.
Using NordVPN Inside India
Inside India, you do not need an Indian IP for most purposes. GeekChamp notes that nearby Asian and Middle Eastern servers give the best speed from India. Use those for privacy on public Wi-Fi and general browsing.

Indian Services From Abroad
Indians abroad often need an Indian IP for banking, government portals or Indian streaming. The virtual location covers that. One location can get busy, so try it at different times of day if a service struggles.
Some banks challenge logins from VPN addresses anyway. If that happens, use the bank’s own app over a normal connection where it is safe to do so. A dedicated IP is another option, as our dedicated IP guide explains.

Speed Expectations
From inside India, nearby locations in Asia and the Middle East give the best speed, GeekChamp notes. The virtual Indian location routes traffic abroad first, so it is slower for everyday use.
