Surfshark in India (2026): Virtual Mumbai and Delhi Servers Since 2022

Surfshark India servers are virtual: Surfshark shut its physical servers in India in June 2022 rather than follow CERT-In rules requiring VPN providers to keep logs for 180 days and customer data for five years, its blog explains. Its virtual India locations give Indian IP addresses from servers in Singapore, the Netherlands and London. Cybernews counts 50 virtual servers across Mumbai and Delhi in 2026. Using a VPN is legal in India, Security.org notes.

This guide covers what that means for users in India and Indians abroad.

Why Surfshark India Servers Are Virtual

CERT-In’s 2022 directions required VPN providers operating servers in India to log user activity for 180 days and keep customer data for five years. Surfshark said that conflicted with its no-logs policy and closed its physical servers before the rules took effect on 27 June 2022. NordVPN, Proton VPN, PIA and ExpressVPN did the same, Security.org notes.

Surfshark India: physical and virtual servers compared

Virtual Mumbai and Delhi

Cybernews and CyberInsider describe 50 virtual servers with Mumbai and Delhi addresses, and Cybernews notes you can pick either city. Virtual locations work like physical ones for getting an Indian IP, Surfshark explains, but the hardware sits abroad, which adds some distance.

Surfshark India Setup

Open the app, search for India and pick Mumbai or Delhi. Connect, then open the Indian service you need. Users inside India who connect to servers abroad notice no change, Surfshark says. Our India VPN guide covers wider use.

Setup in five steps for virtual Mumbai and Delhi locations

Is It Legal?

Yes. Security.org and Cybernews both describe VPN use as legal in India; the 2022 rules target providers, not users. Our India VPN law guide explains the details.

For Indians Abroad

Students and workers abroad often need an Indian address for banking, government portals or streaming apps. A virtual Mumbai or Delhi location provides that address, though the route runs via Singapore or Europe.

Speed and Distance

Because the hardware sits outside the country, a user in Chennai connecting to the Mumbai location travels to Singapore and back. Pick a nearby physical location, such as Singapore, when you only need privacy rather than an Indian address.

Streaming Indian Services

Indian streaming apps check location as well. Test the service you need with the Mumbai and Delhi options, and clear the app’s data before retrying. Our Netflix guide explains why services detect VPNs.

Several Devices

Surfshark sets no device limit, our device table records, which suits a family sharing one plan across phones and laptops.

Privacy

A no-logs policy matters more under rules like CERT-In’s. Keep the kill switch on, and run our DNS leak guide after connecting.

Checking Your Address

After connecting, open our VPN test page to confirm the address shows Mumbai or Delhi. The country should read as India even though the server sits abroad.

Public Wi-Fi in India

Airport, café and hotel networks are shared with strangers. Any server location protects you there, since the tunnel encrypts traffic before it leaves the device. Our public Wi-Fi guide explains why.

Testing Before You Commit

Surfshark offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, our refund table records, so you can test the Indian locations with your own apps first.

Kill Switch and Settings

Turn on the kill switch in Surfshark’s settings so an unexpected drop does not expose your real address. On Android, the app also offers Bypasser for split tunnelling, its support pages note.

When Not to Use the Indian Locations

Inside the country, for general privacy, a nearby location such as Singapore avoids the round trip that a virtual Mumbai address involves. Use the Indian addresses only when a service needs them.

Quick Check

Open the Indian app or site you need, sign in and play something short. If it still says the content is unavailable, clear the app’s data, switch between Mumbai and Delhi, and try again before contacting support.

Families in Two Countries

Families split between India and abroad can share one plan across homes only if the terms allow; check before sharing. With no device cap, adding relatives’ phones is technically simple.

Payment From India

Check the checkout for local payment options and the currency shown before paying. Prices on review sites quoted in rupees may differ from Surfshark’s own checkout.

Keeping It Updated

After app updates, confirm the Indian locations still appear in your favourites and that the kill switch stayed on. Then reconnect once to refresh the session.

Other Providers

NordVPN offers a virtual Mumbai location, Cybernews notes, as our NordVPN India guide explains. NordVPN and Surfshark share an owner, Nord Security. Surfshark sets no device limit, which suits families.

Our audit table counts two Deloitte audits for Surfshark, based in the Netherlands, and Wikipedia notes its network runs on RAM-only servers. Our Surfshark price guide covers the plans.

How We Research

This page draws on Surfshark’s 2022 blog post on India, Business Standard’s coverage, Security.org’s, Cybernews’ and CyberInsider’s 2026 India VPN guides, Wikipedia and our Surfshark tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Surfshark’s India announcement. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
