Astrill OpenVPN is one of four protocols in its apps, alongside its own OpenWeb and StealthVPN and the open-source WireGuard. VPNOverview notes OpenVPN works with P2P clients but is not available for connections in China, where StealthVPN, built on OpenVPN with extra obfuscation, takes its place. VPN.com reports users describing OpenVPN as unstable on Astrill, and on Linux it is the manual route, without StealthVPN.
This guide covers when to choose it, how to switch and the trade-offs.
Where Astrill OpenVPN Fits
Choose OpenVPN for torrenting, since VPNOverview found it works with P2P clients, and for open-source code you can trust without Astrill’s word. Cloudwards notes it uses AES-256. Choose StealthVPN instead in China or on networks with deep packet inspection. Our WireGuard vs OpenVPN guide explains the open protocols.

Switching Protocol in the App
Open Astrill’s settings, choose OpenVPN as the protocol and pick a server. The desktop apps include a kill switch, VPN.com notes, and on Windows App Guard blocks chosen apps when the VPN is off, though TechRadar notes App Guard does not work with OpenWeb. OpenVPN avoids that limitation.

OpenVPN or StealthVPN?
StealthVPN layers obfuscation on top of OpenVPN to make traffic look like HTTPS, VPN.com explains, which helps against China’s firewall. That disguise costs speed: vpnrating measured about 70% loss on distant servers for StealthVPN. Plain OpenVPN is lighter but easier to detect. Our obfuscation guide explains the trade-off.

Manual OpenVPN on Linux and Routers
On Linux, Astrill offers a client, but manual OpenVPN is also an option without StealthVPN, as our Astrill Linux guide explains. Routers run Astrill through its applet on DD-WRT, Tomato or AsusWRT-Merlin, as our Astrill router guide covers.
UDP or TCP
OpenVPN can run over UDP or TCP. UDP is usually faster; TCP gets through networks that block UDP but adds overhead. Start with UDP and switch to TCP if connections fail. Cloudwards notes StealthVPN also offers both.
Astrill OpenVPN on Phones
Reviewers describe protocol options differing between Astrill’s apps, and HighTechSociety found the Android app lacked a kill switch and leaked DNS in its test. Check the protocol menu on your phone, and prefer desktop apps for sensitive use. Our Astrill iPhone guide covers the iOS app.
Is Astrill OpenVPN Worth Choosing?
Outside China, OpenVPN gives open-source assurance and P2P support, but WireGuard is usually faster. Inside China, neither replaces StealthVPN. Expect to switch between protocols by situation rather than pick one for good. Our Astrill WireGuard guide covers the faster option.
A Quick Rule
Torrenting outside China? OpenVPN with the kill switch. Everyday browsing? WireGuard. In China or on a filtered network? StealthVPN. Unstable connection? Switch UDP and TCP before switching protocol.
Kill Switch and App Guard
VPN.com notes a kill switch on Astrill’s desktop clients. On Windows, App Guard goes further by blocking chosen apps whenever the VPN is off, and it works with OpenVPN, unlike OpenWeb. Use it for a torrent client. Our kill switch guide explains the difference between the two approaches.
Checking the Connection
After switching to OpenVPN, confirm the address with our VPN test page and run our DNS leak guide. Repeat after switching between UDP and TCP.
Astrill OpenVPN on Mac
The Mac app offers the same protocol menu. Our Astrill Mac guide notes the App Store version needs macOS 11 and Apple M1 or later, so Intel Macs use the website client.
Linux Users
On Linux, manual OpenVPN works without the client, but without StealthVPN, so it is unsuitable for China. Use the client there if you need the disguise.
Router Use
Routers run Astrill through its applet on DD-WRT, Tomato or AsusWRT-Merlin. Check which protocols the applet offers on your firmware before choosing a server, since router processors handle OpenVPN more slowly than a laptop does.
Testing Before You Pay
Ask for Astrill’s trial and test OpenVPN with your torrent client and network first, since refunds are disputed.
Quick Check
After connecting, start a torrent client briefly and confirm its traffic shows the VPN address in the client’s status.
Several Devices
Use OpenVPN on the computer that runs your torrent client and WireGuard on the others, so each device uses the protocol that suits its job.
Stability Reports
VPN.com’s review notes reports of frequent disconnects on OpenVPN. If that happens, switch between UDP and TCP, try a nearer server, or move to WireGuard for everyday use outside China.
Torrenting
For P2P, OpenVPN with the kill switch on is the documented choice. On Windows, port forwarding works with StealthVPN, our Astrill Windows guide notes. Our torrenting VPN guide compares providers.
Astrill’s Record
No source we read found an independent audit of Astrill, and vpnrating notes its own OpenWeb and StealthVPN protocols are closed-source. Tom’s Guide reports Astrill keeps active-session data and records of its last twenty connections. Its pricing page lists $30 a month or $180 a year, as our Astrill price guide explains.
How We Research
This page draws on Cloudwards’, VPN.com’s, VPNOverview’s, vpnrating’s and TechRadar’s Astrill coverage, and our Astrill guides and tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 7 October 2026. The main source we relied on is VPNOverview’s Astrill review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
