IPVanish for Torrenting (2026): Fast P2P and SOCKS5, but No Port Forwarding

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

Is IPVanish good for torrenting? For most downloaders, yes: Comparitech counts more than 2,400 P2P-friendly servers, it adds a SOCKS5 proxy on more than 25 servers in 14 countries, and its unlimited devices cover a seedbox or NAS too. The gaps are port forwarding, which it does not offer, VPNAlert notes, and its US base. It has two audits in our table, by Leviathan and Schellman.

This guide covers servers, the kill switch, binding your client, SOCKS5, the missing port forwarding and the legal side.

Is IPVanish Good for Torrenting Downloads?

IPVanish suits downloaders who want speed, simplicity and room for many devices, including a seedbox, NAS or second laptop. VPNpro found it fastest on WireGuard, and Cloudwards measured little slowdown on nearby servers, which matters for large downloads.

It suits heavy seeders less well, because without port forwarding fewer peers can reach you. Our torrenting VPN guide compares providers that offer it.

IPVanish good for torrenting: features compared

Servers and Speed

Comparitech lists more than 2,400 P2P-friendly IPVanish servers, and VPNAlert’s tests used ordinary nearby servers. Pick the nearest location and WireGuard in the app’s settings for the best speed; distant servers fell below 80% of the unprotected speed in three of Cloudwards’ locations.

IPVanish owns its servers rather than renting them, Top10VPN notes, which gives it direct control over the hardware your traffic passes through. Our IPVanish speed guide covers fixes if downloads crawl.

Kill Switch and Binding

Turn on IPVanish’s kill switch before starting a client. In Security.org’s desktop tests it cut traffic within a second on each of five forced disconnects. Then bind the client to the VPN interface so it cannot fall back to your normal connection, even for a moment.

In qBittorrent, that is Tools, Options, Advanced, Network interface; pick the entry that appears only when IPVanish is connected. Never exclude the client with split tunnelling, or it will use your real address.

The SOCKS5 Option

IPVanish’s SOCKS5 proxy routes only the torrent client, without encryption, and is often faster than the VPN, VPNAlert notes. Generate proxy credentials in your account and enter a proxy host name and port 1080 in the client, with authentication turned on.

VPN.ac advises disabling DHT, PEX and IPv6 when using SOCKS5 to avoid leaks. Our IPVanish SOCKS5 guide walks through the setup.

Is IPVanish Good for Torrenting if You Seed?

IPVanish does not offer port forwarding, VPNAlert notes. Popular, well-seeded torrents still download well; rare content and private trackers get harder because fewer peers can connect to you. Upload ratios on private trackers suffer most, which can put accounts there at risk.

If seeding matters, providers such as PIA and Proton offer port forwarding in their apps. Our port forwarding guide compares them.

Double Hop and Split Tunnelling

IPVanish’s desktop apps offer Double Hop, which routes traffic through two servers, Security.org notes; it adds privacy at a cost in speed that large downloads will feel. Split tunnelling on Windows and Android works by app and by domain, Tom’s Guide notes.

Keep the torrent client inside the tunnel at all times and exclude other apps if you need to, such as a banking app that rejects VPN addresses.

Seedboxes and NAS Devices

Because IPVanish sets no device limit, a NAS or Raspberry Pi running a torrent client fits on the same plan as your phones and laptops. The docker-transmission-openvpn container lists IPVanish as a provider and downloads its configuration files itself.

Only the torrent client then uses the VPN, and the rest of the device stays direct. Our IPVanish Synology guide covers that route.

Checking for Leaks

Load a torrent IP checker’s magnet link, such as the one on ipleak.net, in your client, and confirm it reports an IPVanish address. Run the test again after switching servers, protocols or client versions.

Disable IPv6 on your adapter if the app does not cover it. Our DNS leak guide covers the browser side.

Price and Refund

IPVanish costs $57.22 for the first 24 months and renews at $89.99 a year, VPNOverview lists, with no device limit. Yearly website plans carry a 30-day refund; monthly plans carry none.

Our IPVanish price guide compares the plans.

Privacy and Jurisdiction

IPVanish is based in the US and owned by Ziff Davis. Its no-logs policy has two audits in our table, by Leviathan and Schellman, fewer than NordVPN’s six or Mullvad’s ten-plus. US-based providers can receive legal requests, so audits matter.

Our NordVPN vs IPVanish page weighs the record against a rival with more audits.

The Legal Side

A VPN hides torrenting from your internet provider, but it does not make downloading copyrighted material legal; rules differ by country. Public trackers expose your address to everyone in a swarm, which is exactly what the VPN hides.

Our VPN legality guide covers the rules by country.

How We Research

This page draws on Comparitech’s, VPNAlert’s, VPNpro’s, Cloudwards’, Top10VPN’s and Security.org’s IPVanish coverage, VPN.ac on SOCKS5 and our IPVanish tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is VPNAlert’s IPVanish torrenting guide. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
