Windscribe Chromecast support depends on the model. Windscribe has an Android TV app on Google Play, so a Chromecast with Google TV or a Google TV Streamer installs it directly, even on the free plan. Cast-only Chromecasts run no apps and fetch cast streams over their own connection, so a phone’s VPN does not cover them. They need a router running Windscribe, which takes a paid plan or a GL.iNet router.

Which Chromecast Do You Have?
A Chromecast that came with a remote and shows a home screen of apps runs Google TV and can install Windscribe. The Google TV Streamer, its successor, works the same way. One without a remote that only receives casts is a cast-only model.

Windscribe Chromecast With Google TV
Open Google Play on the Chromecast, search for Windscribe, install it, sign in and connect. Lazy Login lets you sign in with a code instead of typing a password. Accept Android’s VPN request on first use, then pick WireGuard and a nearby location for playback.

Cast-Only Chromecasts and Routers
When you cast from Netflix or YouTube, the phone tells the Chromecast what to play, and the Chromecast downloads the stream itself. Windscribe on the phone does not change that stream at all.
Screen mirroring sends the phone’s whole screen instead, so the phone’s VPN applies, at lower quality. Windscribe’s Proxy Gateway does not help here, since a Chromecast has no proxy settings.
Generate a WireGuard or OpenVPN file on a paid plan and load it into a router. Alternatively, use a GL.iNet router, which supports Windscribe directly, GL.iNet’s documentation lists. The Chromecast then needs no VPN settings of its own at all.

The Free Plan and Streaming
The Android TV app works on the free plan, with 10 GB a month and servers in 10 countries. That is enough to test but not for regular high-definition viewing. Router files need a paid plan.
The free plan gives 10 GB a month with a confirmed email; Pro costs $9 a month or $69 a year with no renewal jump. Windscribe’s terms allow a refund of the first payment within seven business days if you have used less than 10 GB.
Security.org reported Netflix problems on Windscribe, while Cloudwards reached Netflix even on the free plan after switching servers. Test your services on the free plan before paying for Pro.

Settings on Google TV Models
Choose WireGuard and a nearby location for smooth, steady playback, and use Stealth or WStunnel only on networks that block VPNs. R.O.B.E.R.T. can block ads and trackers at the DNS level on the TV too, including inside some apps.
Windscribe sets no device limit, so the Chromecast joins your other devices on one account, free or paid.
Travelling and Checking It Works
Hotel networks often block casting between devices or need you to pass a login page first. A travel router running Windscribe gives the Chromecast and your phone a private network to share.
Google TV models can also run the app directly on hotel Wi-Fi once you pass the login page, though casting may still be blocked.
On a Google TV model, the Windscribe app shows the connected location. For cast-only models behind a router, check from a phone on the same network that the address is a Windscribe one.
Restart the streaming app after connecting so it checks your region again from scratch.
App or Router?
On a Google TV model, the app is simpler and works on the free plan. A router suits cast-only Chromecasts and households with several devices that cannot run apps, such as LG or Samsung TVs, and it covers them all at once.
Both use the same Windscribe account, and Windscribe sets no device limit either way, so you can combine them.
Privacy
Windscribe’s no-logs claim held when an Athens court dismissed charges against its CEO in April 2025, because no user data existed. Sign-up needs no email, though confirming one raises free data to 10 GB.

Why Proxy Gateway Does Not Help
Windscribe’s Proxy Gateway turns a computer into a SOCKS5 or HTTP proxy for devices on your network, but only devices with proxy settings can use it. Chromecasts have none, so Proxy Gateway cannot cover them.
It can still help other devices at home, such as a tablet or a console with a proxy option, while the computer stays on.
