Windscribe on Smart TV (2026): Apps for Google TV, Fire TV and Apple TV, a Router for the Rest

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

Windscribe for TV use depends on the TV’s system. Windscribe has apps for Android TV and Google TV sets, Fire TV devices on Fire OS, and Apple TV on tvOS 17.5 or later. LG’s webOS and Samsung’s Tizen run no VPN apps, so those sets need a router running Windscribe. That takes a paid plan or a GL.iNet router with built-in support. The free plan’s 10 GB works in the TV apps.

This guide covers each TV system, setup, the free plan, routers for LG and Samsung, streaming and troubleshooting.

Which TVs Take the App

Google TV and Android TV sets, including many Sony, TCL and Philips models, install Windscribe from Google Play. Fire TV smart TVs and sticks on Fire OS use the Amazon Appstore, and Apple TV HD and 4K use the tvOS App Store.

LG webOS, Samsung Tizen and Roku TVs cannot run VPN apps at all, whatever the provider. Our smart TV VPN guide explains why.

Windscribe for TV on Google TV

Open Google Play on the TV, search for Windscribe, install it, sign in and connect, accepting Android’s VPN connection request the first time. Pick a nearby location for smooth streaming, and WireGuard, which Windscribe offers with post-quantum encryption built in.

Our Windscribe Android guide covers Windscribe’s Android app, which shares its account and server list with the TV app.

Fire TV and Apple TV

On Fire OS, install Windscribe from the Amazon Appstore, where it has been since 2017, and sign in with Lazy Login, which avoids typing a password with the remote. We found no confirmation of a Windscribe app for Amazon’s Vega OS sticks.

On Apple TV, install the tvOS app, sign in, and allow the system permission on first connection, entering the passcode if asked. Our Windscribe Apple TV guide and Windscribe Firestick guide cover both.

No device limit

LG and Samsung TVs

For webOS and Tizen sets, put Windscribe on the router. Generate a WireGuard or OpenVPN file on a paid plan, or use a GL.iNet router, which supports Windscribe directly, GL.iNet’s documentation lists. The TV then uses the VPN with no setting of its own, and so does every other device on that network.

We found no Windscribe Smart DNS service for these sets. Our Windscribe router guide covers the router route.

Free Plan, Pro and Streaming

The free plan gives 10 GB a month with a confirmed email and servers in 10 countries. That is enough to test the app but not for regular high-definition viewing.

Pro costs $9 a month or $69 a year with no renewal jump, or Build-a-Plan from $3. Our Windscribe price guide compares them.

Security.org reported Netflix problems on Windscribe, and streaming services may block VPN addresses on any device. Test your services on the free plan before paying, since Windscribe’s refund window is only seven days, and only under 10 GB of use.

After connecting, restart the streaming app so it checks your region again, rather than reusing the old one.

One Account for Every Screen, and Privacy

Windscribe sets no device limit, so one account covers every TV, stick, phone and laptop in the house. Free accounts share the 10 GB allowance across them, so several TVs use it up faster.

A router counts as one connection but covers every device behind it, including TVs that cannot run apps, such as LG and Samsung sets.

Windscribe’s no-logs claim held when an Athens court dismissed charges against its CEO in April 2025, because no user data existed. Sign-up needs no email, though confirming one raises free data to 10 GB.

Our Windscribe safety guide covers its record.

Troubleshooting

When the app will not connect, try another location or protocol. Stealth and WStunnel help on restrictive networks and work on the free plan too. When streaming buffers, choose a nearer location and check your free data has not run out for the month.

Our guide to turning off a VPN on a smart TV covers disconnecting on each system.

Choosing a Location

Pick the nearest Windscribe location for everyday privacy and the best speed, or a location in the country whose catalogue you subscribe to while travelling. Free accounts choose from servers in 10 countries; Pro opens more than 69 countries.

Switch locations only when you need to, and restart the streaming app after each change so it checks your region again.

Checking It Works

Most TVs have no handy leak test. Confirm the region inside a streaming app or from a phone on the same network or account. The Windscribe app shows the connected location on its main screen, which is the quickest check.

For router setups, run a DNS leak test from a phone or laptop behind the same router, and repeat it after changing location. Our guide to Windscribe on Chromecast covers free app on Google TV, a router for older models.

How We Research

This page draws on Windscribe’s Apple TV guide and plans page, GL.iNet’s WireGuard client documentation, Security.org’s Windscribe review and our Windscribe device tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Windscribe’s Apple TV guide. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
