Hotspot Shield vs Windscribe is a contest between a fast paid service and a generous free plan. Hotspot Shield, owned by Point Wild, sells Premium at $12.99 a month or $7.99 a month yearly, Security.org lists, with a 45-day refund. Windscribe gives 10 GB a month free after email confirmation and unlimited devices, and charges $9 a month or $69 a year. Both have disputed audit records, and neither leads on streaming.
This guide compares them on price, free plans, privacy, streaming and fit.
Hotspot Shield vs Windscribe on Price
Hotspot Shield Premium costs $12.99 monthly or $7.99 a month on a yearly plan, about $96 a year, and Top10VPN quotes from $2.99 a month over 36 months. Windscribe costs $9 monthly or $69 a year. Over a single year, Windscribe is cheaper; on a long first term, Hotspot Shield can be. Our Hotspot Shield price guide covers its renewal.

Free Plans
Windscribe Free gives 10 GB a month with a confirmed email, 2 GB without, servers in 10 countries and unlimited devices, with no adverts. Hotspot Shield Free offers one location with adverts on mobile, Security.org notes. Our Hotspot Shield free guide covers its limits.

Privacy and Audits
Sources disagree on both. Security.org describes Hotspot Shield’s no-logs policy as audited, while our audit table records an audit of its protocol only. For Windscribe, our table counts a Packetlabs infrastructure audit, while Security.org says it lacks an independent no-logs audit. Windscribe is Canadian; Hotspot Shield belongs to Point Wild. Our VPN audit tracker explains what audits check.
Features
Hotspot Shield’s Hydra protocol is its speed edge, though PCWelt found its kill switch works only with Hydra. It has no port forwarding. Windscribe offers R.O.B.E.R.T., a configurable blocklist, on free and paid plans. Our Windscribe review covers its features.
Streaming
Security.org reached Netflix, Max, Prime Video and BBC iPlayer with Hotspot Shield, but Disney+ results split testers, as our Hotspot Shield Disney+ guide explains. Security.org found Windscribe struggles with Netflix.

Hotspot Shield vs Windscribe for Torrenting
Hotspot Shield has no port forwarding, BleepingComputer found, which slows seeding. Windscribe allows torrents on Pro and paid Build-a-Plan locations, but switches P2P off on its free servers; check its port forwarding options before relying on them. Our Hotspot Shield port forwarding guide covers the gap.
Kill Switch
PCWelt found Hotspot Shield’s kill switch works only with Hydra, so keep that protocol selected. Check the kill switch settings in Windscribe’s app too. Test either by switching Wi-Fi off and on while connected.
Trials and Refunds
Hotspot Shield offers a seven-day Premium trial with a card and a 45-day guarantee, as our Hotspot Shield free trial guide explains. Windscribe’s free plan lets you test without paying at all.
Devices
Windscribe allows unlimited devices on free and paid plans. Hotspot Shield’s device count differs by source, five or ten on Premium, so check the plan page.
A Quick Rule
Want speed and a long refund window? Hotspot Shield. Want free data or many devices? Windscribe. Torrent heavily? Neither is the strongest pick; compare PIA.
Hotspot Shield vs Windscribe on Ownership
Hotspot Shield belongs to Point Wild, which also owns other VPN brands. Windscribe Limited, a Canadian company, runs Windscribe. Our VPN ownership guide explains why ownership matters.
Testing Both
Start with Windscribe Free, since it costs nothing, then try Hotspot Shield’s seven-day trial or its 45-day guarantee. Test the same server city at the same time of day, and the streaming services you use.
Renewal Prices
Gizmodo flags a costly Hotspot Shield renewal after a cheap opening year. Note the renewal line at checkout for both. Our renewal price guide compares renewals across providers.
Apps and Platforms
Both cover Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Hotspot Shield adds an Android TV app, as our Hotspot Shield Android TV guide explains; check Windscribe’s TV options on its download page.
Quick Check
Whichever you choose, run our DNS leak guide after connecting and test the services you use within the first week.
Support
TheBestVPN notes Hotspot Shield’s live chat is limited to Premium. Check Windscribe’s support options before buying if quick help matters, especially for router or TV setups.
Free Plan for Testing
Because Windscribe Free needs no payment, it is the low-risk way to see whether its apps suit you before comparing with Hotspot Shield’s paid plans.
Privacy on Public Wi-Fi
Both encrypt traffic on café and hotel networks. Keep Hydra selected on Hotspot Shield so its kill switch works, and turn Windscribe’s protection on before joining the network.
Who Should Pick Which
Pick Hotspot Shield for fast paid connections and a long refund window. Pick Windscribe for a free plan you will use or for unlimited devices on a budget. For a free plan without a data cap, Proton VPN beats both, as our Proton VPN vs Windscribe page explains.
How We Research
This page draws on Security.org’s Hotspot Shield and Windscribe reviews, Top10VPN’s Hotspot Shield review, PCWelt and our audit, price and refund tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 7 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Security.org’s Windscribe review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
