A free VPN for iPhone is worth using only if the provider funds it without selling your data. Gizmodo’s 2026 iPhone testing found most free App Store VPNs cap data at 500 MB to 2 GB a month, and that uncapped ones are often funded by selling browsing data. Proton VPN Free is the exception testers agree on: no data limit, an audited no-logs policy, and the Stealth protocol, but one device and a server in one of 10 countries assigned automatically. Our guide to Free VPN Data Limits covers allowances from 2 GB to unlimited, and the catches.
This guide compares the free options, explains the catches and shows when a paid plan makes sense.
The Best Free VPN for iPhone: Proton VPN Free
Proton’s pricing page lists the free plan with no data or speed limits and servers in 10 randomly selected countries. Toolradar and HighTechSociety confirm the kill switch and Stealth are included, and that you cannot choose the country. Gizmodo found Netflix blocked on its US address. Proton VPN has five Securitum audits in our table. Our Proton VPN free guide covers the plan.

Other Free Plans
Windscribe Free gives 10 GB a month after confirming your email and servers in 10 countries. PrivadoVPN Free gives 10 GB a month on one device. TunnelBear Free gives 2 GB; Toolradar reports that TunnelBear removed country selection from its free plan in January 2026. Hotspot Shield Free offers one location with adverts on mobile. Our PrivadoVPN free guide and TunnelBear free guide cover two of them.
App Store Catches
Search the App Store for a free VPN and you will find hundreds. Gizmodo warns that the uncapped ones without a clear business model are often paid for with your data. Check who runs the app, whether its no-logs claim has been audited, and whether it shows adverts. Our free VPN roundup covers the wider field.

Setting Up a Free VPN for iPhone
Install the app from the App Store, create an account, and allow iOS to add a VPN configuration when asked. Turn on the kill switch in settings. Connect, then check the address with our VPN test page. Our iPhone VPN troubleshooting guide helps if it fails.

What a Free VPN for iPhone Is Good For
Free plans suit public Wi-Fi in cafés, hotels and airports, where a VPN encrypts traffic on a shared network. Our public Wi-Fi guide explains the risks. They suit streaming poorly, since free servers are often blocked.
Speed on Free Plans
HighTechSociety measured Proton’s free servers at around 15% average speed loss and notes free servers run at 1 Gbps against 10 Gbps for paid customers. That is fine for browsing and messaging.
Battery and Data
A VPN uses a little extra battery and data on iPhone. Turn on auto-connect only for untrusted Wi-Fi if battery matters, and watch the data counter on capped plans.
Turning It Off
Disconnect in the app, or toggle the VPN in iOS Settings. Our guide to turning off a VPN on iPhone covers each route.
Free VPN for iPhone and Privacy Labels
The App Store shows privacy labels for each app. Read them before installing: an app that links data to your identity or tracks you across apps is a poor choice for privacy, whatever it charges.
Stealth on Restrictive Networks
Proton’s free plan includes the Stealth protocol, Toolradar notes, which helps on networks that block VPNs. Few other free plans offer that.
Kids’ iPhones
A VPN does not filter content. For a child’s iPhone, Apple’s Screen Time controls matter more than a free VPN.
Several Devices
Proton VPN Free covers one device at a time, so an iPhone and an iPad cannot both connect. Windscribe Free allows unlimited devices within its 10 GB.
Quick Check
After connecting, open our test page in Safari and confirm the address changed. If it did not, toggle the VPN off and on in iOS Settings.
Is a Free VPN for iPhone Enough for Travel?
For hotel and airport Wi-Fi, yes. For reaching home banking or streaming abroad, a free plan’s assigned countries may not include home. Proton Free assigns the country for you, while Windscribe and PrivadoVPN let you pick within their free lists.
Keeping It Updated
Allow App Store updates, then reopen the app to confirm the kill switch stayed on.
Free Trials Instead
Surfshark has no free plan but offers a seven-day trial, Toolradar notes, and Hotspot Shield a seven-day Premium trial with a card. Our free VPN trial guide explains how trials and guarantees work.
When to Pay
Pay when you need to choose a country, stream regularly, or cover several devices. Proton VPN Plus, NordVPN and Surfshark all offer full iPhone apps; NordVPN and Surfshark share an owner, Nord Security. Our iPhone VPN guide compares paid options.
How We Research
This page draws on Gizmodo’s 2026 iPhone VPN testing, Toolradar’s and HighTechSociety’s 2026 free VPN roundups, AllAboutCookies, Proton’s pricing page and our free plan tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 7 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Gizmodo’s iPhone VPN test. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
