Yes, IPVanish WireGuard support covers its apps, and VPNpro found the service fastest on that protocol. Its Apple TV app gained WireGuard in July 2026, TechRadar reported, and GL.iNet routers connect to IPVanish over WireGuard after you sign in. We found no IPVanish WireGuard files for manual setups, so Linux and other routers use OpenVPN instead. Our guide to IPVanish on Apple TV covers a native app, now with WireGuard.
This guide covers where WireGuard works, how to switch, when to pick OpenVPN or IKEv2, routers and Linux.
Where WireGuard Works
IPVanish’s apps on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and Fire TV offer WireGuard, and Comparitech notes it is the apps’ default. The Apple TV app added WireGuard and OpenVPN with Scramble in late July 2026, alongside IKEv2, TechRadar reported. Before that, Apple TV users had fewer protocol choices. For where it works and when to use it, see our page on IPVanish IKEv2.
GL.iNet’s router firmware also connects to IPVanish over WireGuard, generating configurations from your credentials, its documentation shows.

Where It Does Not
IPVanish has no official Linux app, so Linux users rely on its OpenVPN files from configs.ipvanish.com. We found no IPVanish WireGuard configuration files for other routers or manual setups, unlike Mullvad or Windscribe, which generate them for their users.
Our IPVanish Linux guide and IPVanish router guide cover those cases.
Switching to IPVanish WireGuard
Open the app’s settings, choose the connection or protocol option and select WireGuard, then reconnect to a nearby server. On most devices it is already the default, so you may not need to change anything.
If a network blocks WireGuard, switch to OpenVPN with Scramble in the same settings menu, which disguises the traffic, or IKEv2 on phones. Switch back once you leave that network, since Scramble costs speed.

WireGuard, OpenVPN or IKEv2?
WireGuard is the fastest and lightest on battery, VPNpro’s tests suggest, because its code and handshakes are simpler than OpenVPN’s. OpenVPN with Scramble gets through more restrictive networks, and IKEv2 reconnects quickly when a phone switches networks.
Keep WireGuard for everyday use on home and mobile networks, where it rarely runs into blocks. Our WireGuard vs OpenVPN guide explains the trade-offs.

Speed
Cloudwards found IPVanish barely slowed on nearby servers, 44.89 Mbps against 45.51 unprotected, and Top10VPN measured about 93 Mbps on a 100 Mbps line. Distant servers were slower in Cloudwards’ tests, falling below 80% of the unprotected speed in three locations.
Our IPVanish speed guide covers fixes if speeds drop.
Battery and Mobile Use
On phones, WireGuard’s lighter design uses less battery than OpenVPN, and it reconnects quickly when you move between Wi-Fi and mobile data. IKEv2 is also quick to reconnect and remains an option on iPhone and Android.
Leave WireGuard as the default on mobile unless a network blocks it, such as some hotel or office Wi-Fi.
TV Apps, Post-Quantum and Extras
The Fire OS app lists WireGuard among its features, alongside split tunnelling, APKMirror’s description shows; the Vega OS app lacks split tunnelling. On Apple TV, WireGuard arrived with the July 2026 update.
For streaming, WireGuard’s lower overhead helps older sticks keep up with high-definition video. Our IPVanish Firestick guide covers both Fire TV systems.
We found no IPVanish claim of post-quantum WireGuard, unlike ExpressVPN and Windscribe, which advertise it. Check IPVanish’s release notes if that matters to you, since features change between app versions.
Desktop apps add Double Hop, which routes traffic through two servers, Security.org notes, at some cost in speed.
WireGuard and Privacy
WireGuard needs the server to hold your address while connected; providers add their own measures to avoid keeping it afterwards. IPVanish owns its servers rather than renting them, Top10VPN notes. IPVanish’s no-logs policy has two audits in our table, by Leviathan and Schellman.
Our no-logs guide explains what audits do and do not prove.
Price and Devices
IPVanish costs $57.22 for the first 24 months and renews at $89.99 a year, VPNOverview lists. It sets no device limit, so WireGuard runs on every phone, laptop and TV you own, all on one subscription.
Yearly website plans carry a 30-day refund, enough to compare WireGuard with your other options. Our IPVanish price guide covers the plans.
Checking Which Protocol You Use
The app’s connection screen or settings show the active protocol, usually next to the server name. If speeds look low, confirm WireGuard is selected before blaming the server.
Some networks quietly block WireGuard’s traffic; if the app keeps reconnecting, that is the likely cause, and OpenVPN with Scramble is the fix.
IPVanish WireGuard on Routers
On a GL.iNet router, open the WireGuard client, choose IPVanish and sign in; the router creates server configurations and connects. Other firmware uses IPVanish’s OpenVPN files.
WireGuard runs lighter on router processors, so GL.iNet is the faster route on modest hardware. On other firmware, OpenVPN may cap speeds well below your line, especially on older routers.
How We Research
This page draws on VPNpro’s and Comparitech’s IPVanish reviews, TechRadar on the Apple TV update, GL.iNet’s WireGuard client documentation, Cloudwards and Top10VPN speed tests and our IPVanish tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is GL.iNet’s WireGuard client guide. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
IPVanish WireGuard FAQ
Yes, in its apps, where it is usually the default.
Since late July 2026, TechRadar reported.
No official app; Linux uses OpenVPN files.
On GL.iNet, which supports IPVanish directly.
Switch to OpenVPN with Scramble.
The Verdict
IPVanish WireGuard is the fast default in its apps and on GL.iNet routers. Use OpenVPN with Scramble on blocked networks and on Linux.
