This guide compares them on privacy, devices, price, torrenting and fit.

Free Plan
Proton offers a free plan with no data cap, one device and servers in 10 countries assigned automatically, Toolradar notes. IPVanish has no free plan, but VPNOverview reports a seven-day free trial on yearly plans in 2026. Our Proton VPN free guide covers Proton’s.
Devices and Price
IPVanish sets no device limit and renews at $89.99 a year. Proton VPN Plus allows 10 devices and renews at about $83.88.
Torrenting
Proton offers port forwarding on paid plans; IPVanish offers SOCKS5 and P2P on every server. Our port forwarding guide and SOCKS5 VPN guide explain each tool.

Streaming
Proton reached Netflix in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Japan in TechRadar’s 2026 testing on paid plans. VPNOverview reached major services with IPVanish, though VPNpro found its access inconsistent.
Apps and TVs
Both have Vega OS and Apple TV apps; Proton’s Apple TV app needs a paid plan. Our Proton VPN Apple TV guide covers it.
Is Proton VPN vs IPVanish a Close Call?
For privacy tools, Proton leads. For households with many devices, IPVanish’s unlimited limit is hard to beat.
Kill Switch
Proton’s Windows app now runs split tunnelling with the kill switch, its release notes say. IPVanish’s apps include a kill switch too; test either by switching Wi-Fi off and on.
Several Devices at Home
Ten devices on Proton Plus suit most families. IPVanish’s unlimited limit suits households with many phones, laptops and TVs.
Quick Rule
Privacy tools or a free start: Proton. Unlimited devices or a torrent proxy: IPVanish.
Refunds
Proton allows a full refund within 30 days, once per user. IPVanish offers 30 days, plus a trial on yearly plans in 2026.
Quick Check
After installing either, run our DNS leak guide and confirm the address on our VPN test page.
Ownership
Proton is run by the Proton Foundation in Switzerland. Ziff Davis owns IPVanish along with StrongVPN. Our VPN ownership guide explains why parents matter.
Privacy on Public Wi-Fi
Both encrypt traffic on café and hotel networks. Turn the kill switch on first. Our public Wi-Fi guide explains the risks.
Keeping It Updated
After app updates, recheck the kill switch and protocol on both, since updates can reset them.
Speed
Top10VPN recorded about 93 Mbps on a 100 Mbps line with IPVanish on nearby servers. Proton’s VPN Accelerator can raise speed by up to 400% in some conditions, Proton says.
Support
Paid Proton users can reach support by live chat, its release notes say. Check IPVanish’s channels during the refund window.
Families
Proton’s Duo and Family bundles add Mail, Drive and Pass for several people, Proton’s plan page says. IPVanish covers a household on one account.
Blocked Networks
Proton’s Stealth disguises traffic where networks block VPNs, and its free plan includes it, Toolradar notes. IPVanish closed its Hong Kong servers, our tables record.

IPVanish’s Network
IPVanish runs 3,200 to 3,400 servers in 108 to 113 countries, depending on the source, all owned rather than rented. VPNpro counts 568 RAM-only servers across 19 locations. Our VPN servers guide explains why ownership matters.
IPVanish Streaming Results
VPNOverview reached Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Max, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer with IPVanish in 2026, while VPNpro called its streaming access inconsistent. Test the services you use within the refund window.
IPVanish on TVs
IPVanish was among the first VPNs on Amazon’s Vega OS in November 2025, and it has an Apple TV app. Our Vega OS VPN guide covers the new Fire TV system.
Ziff Davis
IPVanish belongs to Ziff Davis, which also owns StrongVPN, Encrypt.me, PCMag and CNET, our ownership table records. Read PCMag and CNET coverage of IPVanish with that in mind.
Who Should Pick Which
Pick Proton VPN for Swiss privacy, Stealth, port forwarding and a free plan. Pick IPVanish for unlimited devices and SOCKS5. Our PureVPN vs IPVanish page compares IPVanish with a budget rival.
How We Research
This page draws on VPNOverview’s, Top10VPN’s and VPNpro’s 2026 IPVanish reviews, Toolradar on Proton Free, VPNAlert and our audit, price and ownership tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is VPNOverview’s IPVanish review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
