TunnelBear vs Windscribe pits two Canadian VPNs with free plans against each other. Windscribe’s free plan is larger: 10 GB a month after email confirmation, servers in 10 countries and unlimited devices, Security.org notes. TunnelBear’s free plan gives 2 GB. TunnelBear has the stronger audit record, with annual Cure53 audits since 2017, and belongs to McAfee; sources dispute Windscribe’s audit record. Paid plans are close in price.
This guide compares them on privacy, free plans, price, streaming and fit.
TunnelBear vs Windscribe: Audits and Ownership
TunnelBear has had Cure53 audits every year since 2017, our audit table records, and its parent company, McAfee, is American. Windscribe is run by Windscribe Limited in Canada; our table counts one Packetlabs audit of its production infrastructure, while Security.org says it lacks an independent no-logs audit. A Greek court dismissed charges against Windscribe’s co-founder in April 2025, with no data to hand over. Our VPN audit tracker explains the differences.

Free Plans
Windscribe Free: 10 GB a month after confirming your email, 2 GB without, 10 countries, unlimited devices and no adverts. TunnelBear Free: 2 GB a month, with a UK server and US and Canada servers without city choice, Cloudwards notes. Our TunnelBear free guide covers its limits.

Paid Plans and Price
TunnelBear Unlimited costs about $3.33 a month on yearly or three-year plans, our tables record, with no device limit. Windscribe costs $9 a month or $69 a year, about $5.75 a month, Security.org lists, also with unlimited devices. TunnelBear refunds only first-year annual plans.
Streaming and Torrents
Both have mixed streaming results: testers split on TunnelBear’s Netflix and Disney+ access in 2026, and Security.org found Windscribe struggles with Netflix. TunnelBear has no port forwarding or SOCKS5, Gizmodo found. Our TunnelBear Netflix guide covers its results.
Features
TunnelBear offers GhostBear for blocked networks and VigilantBear, its kill switch. Windscribe offers R.O.B.E.R.T., a configurable blocklist, on free and paid plans. Our Windscribe review covers its features in full.

TunnelBear vs Windscribe on Privacy Tools
TunnelBear’s VigilantBear and GhostBear cover the basics: a kill switch and obfuscation for blocked networks. Windscribe adds R.O.B.E.R.T. for blocking ads, trackers and malware domains, which some users value on the free plan. Both offer split tunnelling on some platforms.
Server Coverage
Windscribe lists 69+ countries on paid plans and 10 on free, Security.org notes. TunnelBear covers 47 countries, Cloudwards counts. Free users get more choice from Windscribe.
Speed
Security.org found Windscribe’s speeds inconsistent on distant servers and slow on Mac. Cybernews kept 83.6% of its speed on a TunnelBear UK server from Lithuania. Test both on your own line.
Support
WizCase notes TunnelBear has no live chat. Check Windscribe’s current support options if quick help matters to you.
TunnelBear vs Windscribe for Travel
TunnelBear’s GhostBear helps on hotel and airport networks that block VPNs. Windscribe’s larger country list helps when you need a home address from more places. For strict countries, neither is a specialist; our China VPN guide covers providers built for that.
TunnelBear vs Windscribe for Families
Both allow unlimited devices on paid plans, so a household can cover phones, tablets and laptops. Windscribe Free also allows unlimited devices, sharing 10 GB, which can suit light use across a family.
Testing Both
Both free plans let you try before paying. Test the services and networks you use most, then decide whether TunnelBear’s audits or Windscribe’s free data matter more to you. Our free VPN roundup compares other free plans too.
Is the TunnelBear vs Windscribe Choice About Price?
Not really. TunnelBear’s paid plan works out cheaper per month on long terms, Windscribe’s free plan gives more data, and both allow unlimited devices. The deciding factors are audits and free-plan needs. Our TunnelBear vs VyprVPN comparison sets the two side by side.
Quick Check
Whichever you choose, run our DNS leak guide after connecting, and confirm the kill switch works by switching Wi-Fi off and on.
Apps and Platforms
Both cover Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. TunnelBear has no TV apps or router support, while Windscribe lists Android TV, Fire TV and router configs, Wikipedia notes. That matters if you want TV coverage. Our TunnelBear smart TV guide covers TunnelBear’s workarounds.
Refunds
TunnelBear refunds first-year annual plans only, as our TunnelBear refund guide explains. Check Windscribe’s current refund terms before paying.
Kill Switch
Both include kill switches. Turn yours on and test it by switching Wi-Fi off and on while connected; traffic should stop until the tunnel returns. We put the two side by side in our TunnelBear vs hide.me comparison.
Browser Extensions
Both offer browser extensions alongside their apps, which suit light browsing on a work laptop.
Who Should Pick Which
Pick TunnelBear if you want audited privacy in a simple app. Pick Windscribe if you want a bigger free plan or configurable blocking. For a free plan with no data cap, Proton VPN beats both, as our Proton VPN vs Windscribe page explains.
How We Research
This page draws on Security.org’s Windscribe review, Cloudwards’ and Gizmodo’s TunnelBear coverage and our audit, refund and price tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 7 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Security.org’s Windscribe review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
