Crunchyroll NordVPN use is mostly about libraries. The US catalogue is the largest: NAT Checker counted more than 1,320 series there in September 2026, against roughly 720 in Germany and France. Cybernews reports NordVPN reaching the US, UK and other libraries, while SpeedTestHQ points to Tokyo servers for the Japanese catalogue.
Why the Region Matters for Crunchyroll NordVPN Users
Crunchyroll licenses shows country by country, so the same account sees different catalogues in different places, Gizmodo and Cloudwards note. Crunchyroll is also not available everywhere, SpeedTestHQ adds.
Our Crunchyroll VPN guide compares providers, and our NordVPN Japan guide covers Japanese servers.
Errors 403, 1005 and Restricted Content
Comparitech and NAT Checker report errors 403 Forbidden and 1005, which come from Cloudflare blocking the address. TechNadu describes a Restricted Content message and notes that Crunchyroll may temporarily ban an IP it flags. Leaks also expose your real location, Comparitech warns.
Fixing Crunchyroll NordVPN Errors
Switch to another server in the same country first. Then clear cookies and reload. Comparitech notes that browsers often work more reliably than the mobile apps, so try a browser if the app fails.
Test for leaks with our DNS leak guide and WebRTC guide. Finally, ask NordVPN’s support which servers currently work, as Comparitech suggests. A dedicated IP reduces shared-address blocks.
US or Japan Library?
The US library is the broadest for English-speaking viewers. The Japanese catalogue suits fans who want titles not licensed abroad, SpeedTestHQ notes, through NordVPN’s Tokyo servers. A paid Crunchyroll account is more reliable than the free tier with a VPN, SpeedTestHQ adds.
Devices
Crunchyroll NordVPN setups work on phones, TVs and consoles alike. Our Firestick guide and Android TV guide cover TV apps, and our streaming hub lists other services. NordVPN belongs to Nord Security, which also owns Surfshark.
Before streaming, confirm the country with our VPN test page. Our NordVPN speed guide helps if episodes buffer. Our refund guide explains the test window.
For Crunchyroll NordVPN use on consoles, our PS5 guide covers the router route. Our Netflix guide explains SmartPlay, which helps here too.
Free Tier or Premium?
SpeedTestHQ notes that a paid Crunchyroll account works more reliably with a VPN than the free tier. The free tier also carries adverts and a smaller catalogue, so the library gains from switching regions are smaller there.
If you plan to use NordVPN mainly for anime, test with your real account during NordVPN’s 30-day refund window, as our NordVPN refund guide explains, before committing to a long plan.
Temporary IP Bans
TechNadu reports that Crunchyroll may temporarily ban an IP address it flags. If every page returns an error after repeated attempts, stop retrying on that server. Switch to a different city, clear cookies, and give the flagged address time to recover.
Rapid server-hopping can make things worse, because each new address that fails adds to the pattern. Two or three careful attempts beat ten quick ones.
Crunchyroll on TVs and Consoles
On Android TV and Fire TV, the NordVPN app runs on the same device as Crunchyroll, as our NordVPN Android TV guide shows. Consoles cannot run VPN apps, so a PS5 or Xbox needs a router or a shared connection. Our NordVPN PS5 guide explains the routes.
On every device, connect first, then open Crunchyroll. If the app still shows your home catalogue, close it completely and reopen it.
Subtitles, Dubs and Catalogue Choice
Libraries differ not only in size but in languages. The US catalogue is the largest by NAT Checker’s count, and English dubs tend to appear there first. The Japanese catalogue, reached through Tokyo servers, suits viewers who want titles not licensed abroad and are happy with Japanese audio.
Pick the region for the show, not the biggest number: a smaller library that has your series beats a larger one that does not. Our Crunchyroll VPN guide compares providers.
Leak Checks Before Streaming
Comparitech warns that DNS and WebRTC leaks reveal your real location to Crunchyroll even when the VPN is connected. A browser can leak through WebRTC, and a misconfigured device can send DNS requests outside the tunnel.
Run both checks once after setting up: our DNS leak guide and WebRTC leak guide show how. If either shows your real country, fix it before blaming the server. Switching servers will not help while a leak is giving you away.
For HD episodes, pick a server near you within the target country. Our NordVPN speed guide covers the rest.
If the Crunchyroll app on a TV keeps showing the wrong catalogue, sign out of the app, connect NordVPN. Sign in again, which forces a fresh location check. The same trick works on phones and tablets after a server change. It takes seconds. Our guide to ExpressVPN for Crunchyroll covers one of three VPNs that worked in testing.
How We Research
This page draws on Crunchyroll VPN guides and tests from Cybernews, Comparitech, NAT Checker, TechNadu, Gizmodo, Cloudwards and SpeedTestHQ. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We read every source on 5 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Comparitech’s Crunchyroll troubleshooting guide. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.

The Verdict
Crunchyroll NordVPN access opens the largest US library and the Japanese catalogue. Switch servers on 403 or 1005 errors, try a browser if the app fails, and test for leaks.
