ExpressVPN vs AirVPN compares a mainstream premium service with a technical specialist. ExpressVPN, owned by Kape and based in the British Virgin Islands, lists 27 independent audits by May 2026, including three KPMG no-logs reports, allows 10, 12 or 14 devices by tier and uses its own Lightway protocol with post-quantum key exchange by default. Its pricing page listed Basic at $83.72 for the first 28 months during a September 2026 promotion, renewing at $99.95 a year. AirVPN, based in Perugia, Italy, publishes live statistics for every server, runs open-source clients, offers free port forwarding on up to 20 ports and needs no email, our review found. It has no independent audit, allows five devices and fails with major streaming services.

This guide compares them on privacy, torrenting, streaming and fit.

ExpressVPN vs AirVPN on Privacy

ExpressVPN has 27 audits, including three KPMG no-logs reports; AirVPN has none but offers live server data and open-source clients, and left Italy in 2024 rather than run Piracy Shield blocklists. Our AirVPN review tells that story.

ExpressVPN vs AirVPN compared on audits, devices and ports

Apps and Ease of Use

ExpressVPN’s apps connect in one click across desktop, mobile, routers and TVs. AirVPN’s Eddie client has twelve tabs of preferences and no graphical client on iOS, our review notes.

Sign-Up

AirVPN needs no email and accepts seven cryptocurrencies. ExpressVPN asks for an email and offers card and other payment options.

Is ExpressVPN vs AirVPN a Close Call?

Only for technical users. ExpressVPN wins on streaming, apps and audits; AirVPN on anonymity, open source and forwarded ports.

Value Over Four Years

Our tables put ExpressVPN near $267 over four years. AirVPN’s longest term, around €2.75 a month, costs much less over the same period.

Linux and Self-Hosting

AirVPN suits Linux users and self-hosters with its open-source client and forwarded ports. ExpressVPN offers a Linux app but no port forwarding.

Who Each Suits

Streamers, families and first-time users suit ExpressVPN. Seeders, home-lab builders and privacy purists suit AirVPN.

Testing Both

ExpressVPN offers 30 days for new users. AirVPN’s refund position is unclear, so its three-day plan is the safe test.

Several Devices

ExpressVPN covers 10 to 14 devices by tier; AirVPN five. A router counts as one device on both.

Censored Networks

ExpressVPN connected on every attempt in vpnpicked’s China testing, our tables record. AirVPN’s Eddie treats every port as its own connection option, which helps where networks block common ports.

Quick Check

After installing either, run our DNS leak guide and test the kill switch or network lock.

Privacy on Public Wi-Fi

Both encrypt traffic on shared networks. Turn on Network Lock or Eddie’s network lock first. Our public Wi-Fi guide explains the risks.

Quick Rule

Streaming and simple apps: ExpressVPN. Forwarded ports and anonymous sign-up: AirVPN.

Jurisdiction

ExpressVPN is registered in the British Virgin Islands, outside the intelligence alliances. Italy, AirVPN’s base, is a Fourteen Eyes member. Our Five Eyes guide explains why logs matter more.

Keeping It Updated

After app updates, recheck the kill switch, protocol and any forwarded ports, since updates can reset them.

Support

Check each provider’s support channels before relying on either for a home server or a trip abroad.

Free Options

Neither offers a free plan. ExpressVPN’s 30-day guarantee covers new users; AirVPN sells a three-day plan instead.

Routers

ExpressVPN publishes router apps; AirVPN works on routers through manual configs. A router counts as one device on both.

Speed

CNET measured 18% speed loss on ExpressVPN, our speed table records. AirVPN publishes live load for each server, so you can pick a quiet one.

Families

ExpressVPN’s 10 to 14 devices suit households; AirVPN’s five suit one person or a couple, unless a router covers the rest of the home.

Torrenting

AirVPN’s free forwarded ports suit seeders and self-hosters. ExpressVPN does not market port forwarding. Our port forwarding guide explains why ports matter.
