IPVanish for Kodi means running IPVanish on the device Kodi runs on, not inside Kodi. Kodi has no VPN of its own, so install IPVanish on the Fire TV stick, Android TV box, PC or Mac that runs it. On Android devices and Fire OS sticks, split tunnelling can send only Kodi through the VPN. Kodi itself is legal; some add-ons are not. For Nvidia Shield and Google TV setup, see our page on IPVanish on Android TV.
This guide covers setup by device, routing only Kodi, Vega OS sticks, speed and the legal side.
Why the VPN Goes on the Device
Kodi is a media player; it has no VPN client of its own, and its add-ons cannot add one reliably. The protection has to come from the system underneath. A VPN app running on the same device covers Kodi’s traffic along with everything else, and IPVanish’s unlimited devices mean every Kodi box fits on one plan.
Our Kodi VPN guide explains what a VPN does and does not change for Kodi users.

IPVanish for Kodi on Fire TV
On a Fire OS stick, search for IPVanish and install it from the Amazon Appstore, sign in and connect, then open Kodi. If your device offers it, set IPVanish to connect on start-up so Kodi is never opened unprotected. IPVanish’s Fire OS app supports split tunnelling, our tables record.
Kodi is not in the Appstore and is usually sideloaded on Fire OS, which Vega OS sticks do not allow. Our IPVanish Firestick guide covers both kinds of stick.

Android TV, PC and Mac
On an Android TV box such as an Nvidia Shield or a Google TV device, install IPVanish from Google Play, sign in with the remote and connect. For Windows or a Mac, install the desktop app and connect it before opening Kodi. The desktop apps include IPVanish’s kill switch, which stops Kodi’s traffic if the tunnel drops.
On Linux, IPVanish has no official app, so use its OpenVPN files. Our IPVanish Linux guide covers that route.
Routing Only Kodi
IPVanish’s Android app splits traffic by app or by domain, our tables record. You can send only Kodi through the VPN while other apps keep using your normal home connection. The Fire OS app offers split tunnelling too.
The reverse also works: keep everything in the tunnel and exclude apps that dislike VPNs, such as some banking or local apps. Our split tunnelling guide explains the trade-off.

Vega OS Sticks
Amazon’s Vega OS sticks run IPVanish’s app, ready since November 2025, but cannot sideload apps, so Kodi does not install on them at all. If Kodi matters, choose a Fire OS stick or an Android TV box, and check the model before buying.
The Vega OS app also lacks split tunnelling, our tables record, so it protects the whole stick or nothing.
Speed for Streaming
Pick a nearby location and WireGuard for the best speed; Cloudwards found nearby servers barely slowed IPVanish, while distant ones dropped below 80%. Older Fire TV sticks may encrypt more slowly than newer boxes.
For 4K streams, a wired connection to the box helps more than any VPN setting. Our IPVanish speed guide covers more fixes.
Choosing a Kodi Device
A Fire OS stick such as the Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max, an Nvidia Shield, or a Windows PC all run both Kodi and IPVanish. Vega OS sticks run IPVanish but not Kodi, which needs sideloading they block.
For 4K and large libraries, a box with more storage and a wired port suits Kodi better than a basic stick, and handles encryption with less strain.
Checking It Works
Open a browser on the same device and check your address shows IPVanish’s location before starting Kodi. With split tunnelling set to Kodi only, the browser will show your real address instead. Turn split tunnelling off briefly to run the check, then turn it back on again.
Restart Kodi completely each time after changing IPVanish’s location so it picks up the new connection, especially before streaming from location-dependent sources.
Price and Devices
IPVanish costs $57.22 for the first 24 months and renews at $89.99 a year, VPNOverview lists. With no device limit, every Kodi box in the house fits on one single plan. Yearly website plans carry a 30-day refund.
Ziff Davis owns IPVanish. Our IPVanish price guide compares the plans.
The Legal Side
Kodi is legal software, but add-ons that stream pirated content are not, and a VPN does not make them legal. Rules on downloading and streaming differ by country, and fines are possible in some. It hides your activity from your internet provider, nothing more.
Use Kodi with legitimate sources, official add-ons from Kodi’s own repository and your own media library, and the legal question disappears. Our VPN legality guide covers the rules by country.
How We Research
This page draws on Cybernews’ IPVanish review, Cloudwards’ speed tests and our IPVanish, Fire TV and Kodi tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Cybernews’ IPVanish review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.

The Verdict
IPVanish for Kodi works best as an app on the same device, with split tunnelling if you want only Kodi protected. Avoid Vega OS sticks if Kodi matters.
