Atlas VPN alternatives are what every former Atlas user needs, because Atlas VPN shut down on 24 April 2024. NordVPN, its sister company in Nord Security, took over paid users for the rest of their subscriptions, NordVPN’s blog explains. Free users lost the service, Tech.co notes, and were offered NordVPN discounts. Atlas was known for a free plan, unlimited devices and SafeSwap servers.
This guide covers what happened and the best replacements for each kind of former Atlas user.
What Happened to Atlas VPN
Atlas VPN closed on 24 April 2024, citing a competitive market and rising costs, iPhone in Canada reported. Paid users moved automatically to NordVPN with equivalent add-ons until their subscriptions ended, and NordVPN turned auto-renewal off by default on those accounts, Tech.co notes. Free users had no migration.

Atlas VPN Alternatives for Former Free Users
Atlas Free offered 5 GB a month. TechRadar recommended PrivadoVPN Free and Proton VPN Free when Atlas closed. Proton VPN’s free plan has no data cap and five audits in our table; PrivadoVPN Free gives 10 GB a month. Our Proton VPN free guide and PrivadoVPN free guide cover them.

For Former Paid Users
If your migrated NordVPN subscription ended, staying with NordVPN keeps a similar experience with six audits in our table. Surfshark, also part of Nord Security, matches Atlas’s unlimited devices. Our Atlas VPN vs NordVPN page compares the services directly.
For Unlimited Devices
Atlas allowed unlimited devices. Surfshark, PIA and TunnelBear Unlimited do too, our tables record. PIA adds port forwarding and three Deloitte audits; it belongs to Kape.
What Atlas Lacked
Atlas never had an independent audit, a review syndicated on globus.studio notes. Most alternatives above now offer audited no-logs policies, which is an upgrade on what Atlas users had.

Atlas VPN Alternatives With SafeSwap-Style Features
Atlas’s SafeSwap servers rotated IP addresses. Surfshark offers rotating IP features, and NordVPN, its sister service, has its own range of specialty servers. Our rotating IP guide explains the idea.
Atlas VPN Alternatives for Streaming
TechRadar’s 2026 testing reached Netflix in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Japan with NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN. Our Netflix VPN guide compares them.
Price
Atlas was a budget option. Our renewal table lists Surfshark at about $79 a year after the first term and CyberGhost at $56.94. Our VPN price guide explains first terms and renewals.
If You Still Have a NordVPN Account From Atlas
Migrated accounts had auto-renewal off by default, Tech.co notes. If you want to keep NordVPN, check your account before the period ends; if not, it simply lapses.
Why Atlas VPN Alternatives Matter for Former Free Users
Former free users had no migration, so they need to choose a new service themselves. Among Atlas VPN alternatives, Proton VPN Free comes closest to a no-cost replacement, with no data cap, while PrivadoVPN Free offers 10 GB a month on one device.
Devices
Atlas allowed unlimited devices, a reason many households chose it. On free plans, Windscribe Free also allows unlimited devices with 10 GB; Proton VPN Free sets its own device limit, so check it first. Check each plan before installing on every device.
Testing a Replacement
Try a free plan first, then use a paid provider’s refund window to test streaming and speed. Our free VPN trial guide explains how trials and guarantees work.
Privacy Upgrade
Atlas had no independent audit. Proton VPN has five, NordVPN six and PIA three in our table, so most Atlas VPN alternatives come with stronger evidence behind their no-logs claims. Our VPN audit tracker explains what audits check.
Quick Check
After installing a replacement, open our test page to confirm the new address, then remove Atlas’s old profile.
Browser Extensions
If you used Atlas mainly in a browser, NordVPN, Surfshark and Proton VPN offer browser extensions alongside full apps, which suit the same light use.
A Quick Rule
Former free user? Proton VPN Free. Former paid user happy with NordVPN? Stay. Want unlimited devices and torrent tools? PIA. Want the most free data on many devices? Windscribe Free.
Several Devices
Check each alternative’s device limit against your household before switching, since Atlas allowed unlimited devices and not every replacement does.
Support
Atlas users who need help with migration questions should contact NordVPN’s support, which now holds migrated accounts.
Ownership
Atlas, NordVPN and Surfshark all sit in Nord Security, so former paid users who stay inside the group keep a familiar company behind their VPN. PIA belongs to Kape, and Proton VPN to Proton AG.
Is the Atlas VPN App Safe to Keep?
No. An app from a closed service no longer receives security updates. Uninstall it and remove any VPN profiles it left on your devices. Our Atlas VPN review is kept for reference.
How We Research
This page draws on NordVPN’s April 2024 announcement, TechRadar’s and Tech.co’s coverage of the shutdown, iPhone in Canada, a review on globus.studio and our audit and device tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 7 October 2026. The main source we relied on is NordVPN’s Atlas VPN migration post. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
