Search for a free VPN trial and you will find dozens of providers advertising one. Most of them are not free trials. They are subscriptions with a refund window attached — you pay first, then claim the money back. That is a legitimate way to test a VPN, and for thorough testing it is actually the better route, but it is not what “free trial” implies and the distinction costs people money every month.

A risk-free trial is a paid subscription with a money-back guarantee. You pay upfront, use the full service for 30 to 45 days, then request a refund if it disappoints. More testing time, full features, but your card is charged and you have to actively claim the money back.
No reputable provider offers a genuine 30-day free trial. Anyone advertising one is describing a refund window.

How Refunds Actually Work
The refund route gives you far more testing time, and every provider we rank honours it. But three conditions decide whether you get your money.
Condition 1: buy directly from the provider’s website. The money-back guarantee covers direct purchases only. Sign up through Google Play or the App Store and you fall under those stores’ refund policies instead — different rules, different timelines, different outcome.
Condition 2: ask for it. Refunds are not automatic. Cancelling your subscription in the dashboard stops future billing; it does not return the money already taken. You have to contact support and request the refund, and it is processed manually.

The Mistakes That Cost People Money
Forgetting the date. Auto-renewal is on by default everywhere. Set a calendar reminder for two days before your window closes — 28 days for most, 43 for CyberGhost’s long plans.
Assuming cancellation means refund. It does not. Cancelling prevents the next charge. Getting the current one back requires a separate request. And turning the VPN off is a third thing again — it stops nothing on the billing side.
Buying through an app store to “keep it simple.” It removes your access to the provider’s own guarantee, which is usually the more generous of the two.
