NordVPN on Linux (2026): GUI by Default, CLI Commands and Kill Switch Quirks

NordVPN Linux support changed a lot in 2025 and 2026. A graphical app arrived in May 2025, its source code went public, and since version 5.3.0 in August 2026 the GUI installs automatically with the daemon, as TechRadar reported. The command line still does everything, and a few new commands make it easier.

How to Install NordVPN on Linux

NordVPN’s support gives three routes. For the command-line client, run NordVPN’s install script from downloads.nordcdn.com through curl or wget, exactly as the support article shows. For the GUI, add -p nordvpn-gui to the wget version. On any system with Snap, run snap install nordvpn; the Snap package includes the GUI.

NordVPN supports the GNOME and KDE desktops. Other distributions are community-supported, according to a GitHub write-up of the GUI. Our Linux VPN guide compares other providers.

NordVPN Linux Commands Worth Knowing

Log in with nordvpn login, then connect with nordvpn connect, or nordvpn c for short. Disconnect with nordvpn disconnect. Version 5.3.0 added nordvpn pause and nordvpn diagnostics, which gathers troubleshooting data into one file; NordVPN notes it does not yet work on Snap installs.

Commands are no longer case-sensitive since 5.3.0, according to TechRadar. Meshnet stays too: NordVPN reversed its plan to remove it on 1 December 2025, and nordvpn set meshnet on switches it on.

The Kill Switch Behaves Differently on Linux

NordVPN’s support explains that the Linux client blocks the whole system’s internet if the VPN drops, and also if you disconnect manually. Turn it off with nordvpn set killswitch off. Our kill switch guide and Linux VPN off guide cover the details.

IPv6 Is on Hold

NordVPN’s release notes say IPv6 support is paused because the technology was still exposed to WebRTC leaks. The nordvpn set ipv6 command is gone, and IPv6 options no longer appear in settings. Our IPv6 leak guide explains why that matters.

Troubleshooting and Removal

If the NordVPN Linux app hangs, ArchWiki suggests toggling the kill switch or restarting nordvpn.service. For general faults, our NordVPN not connecting guide and speed guide cover the Linux fixes, and nordvpn diagnostics helps support.

To remove it, our NordVPN uninstall guide gives NordVPN’s purge commands. NordVPN belongs to Nord Security, which also owns Surfshark.

Privacy Checks on NordVPN Linux

The Linux app now includes post-quantum encryption, according to the GitHub write-up, as our post-quantum guide explains. After connecting, run a DNS test from our DNS leak guide to confirm the resolver.

If the tunnel drops, our disconnection guide lists the protocol and server checks. To test before committing, see our trial guide and refund guide. Thirty days is enough to try every feature.

Installing the GUI

NordVPN’s support gives one install script for both versions. Run it as published for the command-line app, or add the option for the GUI package. A Snap package is also available. The GUI supports GNOME and KDE desktops.

On a machine without a desktop, NordVPN’s separate guide covers signing in without a browser. Our NordVPN Raspberry Pi guide walks through that case.

Meshnet on Linux

The command nordvpn set meshnet on switches Meshnet on from the terminal. That suits home servers and media boxes you want to reach from outside. NordVPN’s release notes confirm Meshnet is staying. Our NordVPN Meshnet guide covers routing and file sharing.

Diagnostics for Support

Version 5.3.0 added nordvpn diagnostics, which bundles logs for a support request. NordVPN notes it does not work with the Snap package. If you use Snap and need help, describe the problem and the version number instead.

The Kill Switch Quirk

On Linux, the kill switch also blocks traffic after you disconnect manually, NordVPN’s support explains. That surprises people who expect the internet to return. Turn it off with nordvpn set killswitch off when you want a normal connection again.

On remote machines, add SSH to the allowlist before enabling the kill switch. Otherwise a disconnect can lock you out. Our NordVPN kill switch guide covers the other platforms.

IPv6 and Pause

NordVPN’s Linux release notes describe IPv6 support as paused for now. If a site behaves oddly, test for IPv6 leaks with our IPv6 leak guide. Our guide to PureVPN on Linux covers GUI app, command line and stable settings.

Which Version to Use

Desktop users get the most from the GUI, which shows servers and settings without commands. Servers, Raspberry Pi boards and minimal systems suit the command-line app, which also works over SSH. Both share the same account and settings, so you can start with one and switch later. Our Linux VPN guide compares other providers’ Linux support. Our guide to NordVPN on Steam Deck covers manual OpenVPN in desktop mode, carried into games.

How We Research

This page draws on NordVPN’s Linux install article and release notes, TechRadar’s report on version 5.3.0, ArchWiki and a GitHub guide to the GUI. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We read every source on 5 October 2026. The main source we relied on is NordVPN’s Linux release notes. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
