TunnelBear on Apple TV (2026): No App, No Router Support, and What to Do

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

TunnelBear Apple TV support does not exist yet. Top10VPN’s August 2026 roundup lists TunnelBear among providers without a tvOS app, alongside CyberGhost and Hotspot Shield; CyberGhost shares an owner, Kape, with ExpressVPN. SafetyDetectives adds that TunnelBear does not support router configuration, which removes the usual workaround. The only remaining routes are unofficial: TunnelBear’s Linux OpenVPN files on a router, or AirPlay from an iPhone running TunnelBear.

This guide covers what the sources say, the workarounds and providers with native Apple TV apps.

What the Sources Say

Apple TV has supported VPN apps since tvOS 17. Top10VPN, AlternativeTo and SafetyDetectives all say TunnelBear does not offer one. TheBestVPN names NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN and IPVanish as providers with native tvOS builds.

TunnelBear Apple TV: what the sources say

TunnelBear Apple TV Workaround: A Router With OpenVPN Files

TunnelBear publishes OpenVPN files for Linux. Users have loaded them onto pcWRT, pfSense and GL.iNet routers, though TunnelBear does not officially support routers, pcWRT notes. If it works, the Apple TV is covered by joining that Wi-Fi. Expect to troubleshoot alone. Our TunnelBear OpenVPN guide covers the files.

Workaround Two: AirPlay From an iPhone

Top10VPN lists AirPlay as one way to use a VPN with Apple TV. With TunnelBear running on an iPhone, screen mirroring sends what the phone plays to the TV. Some apps hand playback to the Apple TV itself instead, which then bypasses the VPN, so check the library on the TV.

Is a TunnelBear Apple TV Workaround Worth It?

For most people, no. The router route needs a compatible router and patience with unofficial files, and AirPlay mirroring ties up your phone. If you already pay for TunnelBear and own a router that accepts OpenVPN files, it may be worth an evening of tinkering. Otherwise a provider with a tvOS app saves time.

Smart DNS

Top10VPN mentions Smart DNS as another Apple TV route, but we found no TunnelBear Smart DNS service in the sources we read. Providers that offer one list it on their own sites. Our Smart DNS vs VPN guide explains how it differs.

Older Apple TVs

Apple TVs that cannot run tvOS 17 do not support VPN apps at all, TheBestVPN notes. For those models, a router is the only route for any provider.

TunnelBear Apple TV Alternatives on a Budget

If price drew you to TunnelBear, Proton VPN’s free plan includes a tvOS app and no data cap, TheBestVPN and our tables show. Surfshark’s paid plan covers unlimited devices, so one plan covers the Apple TV and the rest of the house. Either removes the need for a workaround.

Checking Any Setup

Whatever route you try, open a streaming app on the Apple TV and check the library. From a phone on the same Wi-Fi, run our DNS leak guide, since routers can keep handing out your provider’s DNS.

A Quick Rule

Want a VPN mainly for Apple TV? Choose a provider with a tvOS app. Already on TunnelBear elsewhere? Keep it on phones and laptops, and add a second service only if the TV matters. Tinkerer with a compatible router? Try the OpenVPN files.

Turning Off a Router Workaround

If you tried the router route and want to stop, disable the OpenVPN client in the router or move the Apple TV back to your normal Wi-Fi. Our guide to turning off a VPN on Apple TV covers the TV side.

What Would Change This

If TunnelBear released a tvOS app, setup would become as simple as on other platforms. Check the App Store on your Apple TV from time to time, since tvOS has supported VPN apps since version 17. Until then, the workarounds above are the only TunnelBear Apple TV routes we found in current sources this year.

Providers With tvOS Apps

If you mainly want a VPN for Apple TV, a provider with a native app is simpler. Our NordVPN Apple TV guide and Surfshark Apple TV guide cover two; the pair share an owner, Nord Security.

Proton VPN offers a native tvOS app too, TheBestVPN notes, and has a free plan with no data cap.

Why the Free Plan Struggles on a TV

TunnelBear’s free plan gives 2 GB a month, our tables record. An hour of HD streaming can use much of that, so even a working workaround would run out quickly on the free plan. Our TunnelBear free guide covers the limits.

TunnelBear’s Record

TunnelBear has had annual Cure53 audits since 2017 and belongs to McAfee, our tables record. Its free plan gives 2 GB a month, and Unlimited sets no device limit. Our TunnelBear safety guide covers the full picture.

How We Research

This page draws on Top10VPN’s and TheBestVPN’s Apple TV roundups, SafetyDetectives, AlternativeTo, pcWRT’s TunnelBear guide and our TunnelBear tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 7 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Top10VPN’s Apple TV roundup. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
